Excuse me. It's a closed session.

back in the early 90s when i was workin on my comp sci degree one of the projects i worked on was an attempt to quantify the 'funkiness' of a beat using neural networks.

basically i had 256 inputs (2 measures mapped to the 16th notes of kick, snare, close and open hat) and would train it with transcribed beats and a subjective weights of funkiness, i was using measures from sources like the funky drummer break, some various NWA and PE loops, stuff like that

the idea was then i could brute force generate new ones and score them to find new beats that were funky..

it didn't really work out though. part of it is that it's a bit tricky to transcribe some of them correctly, (and at the time i was kind of a noob about drum programming) but a bigger part was that subtle things like microtiming of the percussion, ("pocket" etc) actually plays a pretty big factor.. also the timbre and envelope of the individual sounds is as important as the actual pattern of them, not to mention stuff like swing/shuffle timing.. the main thing i discovered was really that most good breaks were pretty similar compositionally and it was those little factors that made most of the difference..

with advances in DSP and being able to extract stuff automatically i think there might still be something to work with there but nowadays it's faster for me just to write it the way i want and not worry about the automation

was interesting to study tho

kindms: Funk is on the 1

Everyone knows that.

So funk = 1

Verily, as sayeth the Bootsy of Collins, "Come down on the one."

Angry Drunk Bureaucrat: I'm assuming that the standard unit of Funk is equal to the amount necessary to blow the roof off the mothasucka.

Nah nah nah nah.

Do do do do do.

Krustofsky: One cannot accurately quantify the Funk until they've been aboard the Mothership.

/no clue what a Pharrell is

You can't get in without your funk card, baby

I'm a rock star water walker baby.

RIP pretty much everyone in that group

Maceo with Fred come to my city every year. Once, just once, Bootsy showed up with them.

"Glory be, the funk's on me."

patrick767: Funk? They attempted to measure what makes people want to dance in music. The only mention of "funk" in TFA is this: "Classic dance tunes in disco, funk, hip-hop and rhythm and blues also hit this sweet spot of syncopation, Witek says."

Don't let misleading headlines stop you though, farkers.

/We want the funk. Gotta have that funk.

You are arguing with yourself. Funk does that naturally, son.

Clap your hands if you feel like that's what you wanna do

Yeah, that's how the shiats werk, yo, it's the illusion of freedom of will.  Everything I do is something my mind mechanism makes me feel like it was what I wanted to do.  So even when I put my gun down and raise my hands, thinking back on it it was something I decided I wanted to do rather than end up in the morgue.  Did I set out that morning with the intention of giving up my best handgun on the sidewalk and surrendering to police in front of a crowd near the farmer's market?  No.  But it felt like I made every choice that caused the final outcome.  So you can say that I did indeed choose to put my handgun on the sidewalk.  But at the same time, it kinda felt like to all only made sense in hindsight and some gaps were being filled in by my mind after the fact.

Ask yourself are you funky enough to be a globe trotter? Are you?

I'm the whitest white boy who ever got off the bus from Whitetown, but I gotta have me some funk. Praise Bootsy, Clinton and Brown, and tear the roof off that shiat.
