He didn't need to get laid. None of us nerdy frustrated guys need that.

That's right; you leave it to the pros, you wouldn't know what to do with it anyway.

Getting laid might have helped. I know it did with me.....

2014-05-29 08:38:28 AM
I think getting laid may have helped him grow the fark up.  On the other hand he sounded like a complete nutcase who should have been committed to a mental facility a long time ago.  And I doubt even a large team of doctors studying his particular brand of farked up psychosis would help much.  Dude was completely cray cray.

The guys on Big Bang are by and large attractive or at least well inside many women's doable range.  Many, many attractive would put up with their quirks.

It certainly couldn't have hurt.

As if Jerk offs like Rodger never heard of jerking off.

Or hoes.

No more farking excuses please. He was a grown up man, who knew what he was doing. He had mental issues, but nothing that someone wouldn't know right from wrong.

stop blaming this and that. If you wanna blame someone or something, blame him for doing it and blame the society that failed to prevent him.

I had no clue who Arthur Chu is....looked him up. So he's a comedian and voiceover artist with a BA in history, whose claim to fame is that he was on a game show.

So they're just letting anyone into the "nerd club" nowadays?

2014-05-29 08:59:58 AM
I asked my fiancee about her take on the situation.  I am paraphrasing, but her basic quote was, "The only reason this kid couldn't get laid was women could smell the insanity on him.  I could just from looking at a picture on him.  He had every advantage- he was pretty good looking, had a nice car, money, and his Dad had connections.  Any somewhat normal human being wouldn't have even had to try."

So, my basic take on it is that his mental illness is the real issue here... as it is in every school shooting.  America just doesn't want to look at that part of the issue in depth because it makes us uncomfortable.  Most likely because there isn't a clear cut or easy answer.

/plus dude wasn't really the type of nerd described

What would be a more acceptable resume for you?

Remember that like most rampage killers, he spent a long time (in this case a year) planning this out.

You can't stop people willing to put that much effort into planning a crime during which they fully expect to die.  Period.  It just can't be done, and it's a fool's game to ratchet up the difficulty because they have all the time in the World to come up with alternatives you haven't thought of.

2014-05-29 09:02:22 AM
Getting laid likely would've delayed Elliot Rodger's final snap, as would have finding a relatable friend.

But I suspect it was always just a matter of time. Eventually, he would've gone postal.

2014-05-29 09:04:04 AM
He needed half a year in the county jail. That would have fixed his little red wagon. Also MY wife pointed out that he said in his manifesto that he WANTED to talk to girls but never actually DID. I'm a cripple from birth and I had a hard time socially because of it and I still went up to people and said hello and, believe you me, I got shot down a LOT.
No doesn't hurt. Tripping on a root because you didn't bring your blind cane to school because you wanted to look normal... that hurts.

Yeah, I didn't get that vibe at all.  More like a petulant, entitled snowflake raised with the expectation that everyone should love him because he was alive.

Real life has a way of punishing such arrogant naiveté, a the public that allows it to fester.

Why is this Rodger loser stupid acts being used to talk about nerds?

Was he even a nerd? Or is this just another case of particular agendas co-opting a tragedy?

I looked at his pics and videos and he was NOT a nerd. He never even referenced nerdy things in his bullshiat videos. So why?

Yeah, it's clearly the nerds the ones who perpetrate and maintain the rape culture in this country. Nope, it's not jocks and their entitlement to pussy because they play sports or drive fast cars. Nope, date raping is not totally a jock thing.

This is disgusting and proof that nerds can never catch a break. When we're not being mocked and ridiculed in HS, we're being exploited by the media as caricatures and now we're being used as scapegoats for an immense tragedy.

Someone who I thought needed to read this posted it on facebook yesterday, so I think it's good it's making the rounds. Like most things, there's some really good thoughts in there, and some that I think are off base.

I spent a lot of my 20s with guys treating me like "their" manic pixie dream girl, and that gets really old, really fast. I even had one "friend" say that if I didn't hook up with him he was going to hurt himself - he thought he was such a nice guy he deserved it. I disabused him of that notion and then dumped him as a friend. He left me voice mail for months.. close to a year, probably. Super creepy. I do think the santa barbara shooter was more mentally ill than anything else, but our culture did shape his mental illness.

14 hours of WoW a day and being a virgin are two of the criteria needed to classify one as a nerd under DSM 5 guidelines.

Sure, the guy was clearly a misogynistic d-bag, but I think more than that, I tend to blame this actions on "quirky" culture.

There just seems to be a wide-spread belief among younger people who suffer from mental illness that searching for more accommodation in society is a legitimate alternative to getting treatment; that they just need to find the right SO/friends/professional setting where their illness is seen as endearing.

I mean, look at the media tropes: it's Aspergers for men, and Borderline Personality Disorder for women (see: Manic Pixie Dream Girl.)  These diseases are everywhere on television and in the movies these days, and you never see characters seeking treatment, only looking for people who will accept them as they are.  Imagine if we treated infectious diseases the same way, if characters on TV sitcoms refused to take medication for a Herpes outbreak because they'd rather seek acceptance/validation from society.  There would be widespread outrage, and rightly so.

I don't think he probably fit into any social circle.  Sounds like he was too odd/unstable to fit into any group (and the fact he never talked to women makes it sound like he socially isolated himself).  Misogyny is an issue that should be dealt with within the culture, but trying to tie it to this (when it's really a mental health issue) is not going to help the dialogue, it's just going to polarize the topic.

You can debate about how applicable this is to the specific case of Eliot Rodger.

But even leaving Rodger aside, Chu makes really good points about some messed-up aspects of nerd culture and media tropes.  The whole story of the persistent underdog (or nerd) winning the girl.  The whole idea that being a "nice guy" somehow should entitle someone to sex.

When I was a shy, nerdy teenager without a lot of confidence or experience with girls that's the way I saw the world too.  But then I grew up and learned to see women as real people with their own plans, priorities, and interests, and that intimacy is always something that must by given freely by choice, and can never be "earned" or "won."

But some people never grow up and never grow out of that juvenile mindset.

This is probably closer to the real issue.  I think media's influence on people in regards to mental illness is so destructive.  They don't talk about the real problem of mental illness.  Mental illness is treated like a "quirk" rather than a real problem.  There's a societal expectation that as long as you take drugs for your issue you'll be fine.

If there's a dialogue that needs to be started after this issue, it's one on mental illness.

Hi! I'm a nerd! I'm young, I'm white, and I represent the most materially wealthy generation of human beings on Earth that has ever lived. At no time in my life am I without instant access to endless entertainment and educational resources. I am surrounded by novelty and whimsy wherever I go.

A huge percentage of the products conceived in Silicon Valley are designed to make my life, and the lives of people just like me, as comfortable and convenient as possible. Vast armies of workers, millions of them, in China, toiling for wages that I would find intolerable, produce the toys and gadgets that entertain and comfort me.

Another huge percentage of human creative and organizational resources, in Hollywood, are spent crafting spectacular entertainment events specifically around the things I love.

Major cities welcome me, and thousands of people just like me, to their convention centers and hotels, where we gather to congratulate one another.

I am so oppressed.

FTFA: "How much longer are we going to be in denial that there's a thing called 'rape culture'  and we ought to do something about it?
"No, not the straw man that all men are constantly plotting rape, but that we live in an  entitlementculture where guys think they need to be having sex with girls in order to be happy and fulfilled. That in a culture that constantly celebrates the narrative of guys trying hard, overcoming challenges, concocting clever ruses and automatically getting a woman thrown at them as a prize as a result, there will always be some guy who crosses the line into committing a violent crime to get what he "deserves," or get vengeance for being denied it."

Well then I guess there isn't a thing called "rape culture", is there, if it's an "entitlement culture?" And the only reason that "straw man" exists is because there are farkwads who keep saying "We live in a rape culture." If they'd watch what they say as if words actually mean something, then we wouldn't have to clarify that point, would we?

And let's be clear: Saying "We live in a rape culture" is said precisely to put men in general on edge. It's meant to scare men with the threat of tainting them with something the majority of society already finds abhorrent. It's a cheap farking shot.

Other than that, pretty solid essay.

So what you are saying is that non white people aren`t interested in programming, science, comic books, online video games and all the other things that identify someone as `a nerd`. You don`t become a nerd by buying the right items from apple you know. (do they have a `buy this to be a nerd` checklist at the genius bar? maybe, I wouldn`t be surprised)

If you are saying the definition of a nerd excludes non white people then that`s just wrong and a pretty racist statement.

If all you are saying is `rich people can buy more stuff` then I hope you have your bib on to catch the drool or the nurse will have to change you again because that`s so obvious I suspect someone else has to type for you.

sign_of_Zeta: I asked my fiancee about her take on the situation.

Right. Because women never hook up with guys that abuse them, they can smell the bad on them. Here's the real reason he couldn't get laid: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aUgQPzq6ifc

Corn_Fed: Getting laid likely would've delayed Elliot Rodger's final snap, as would have finding a relatable friend.

But I suspect it was always just a matter of time. Eventually, he would've gone postal.

This.  Even if he had gotten a girlfriend and gotten laid, eventually the girl would break up with him, and he would have gone on his shooting rampage then in retaliation for the break-up.

rzrwiresunrise: FTFA: "How much longer are we going to be in denial that there's a thing called 'rape culture'  and we ought to do something about it?

Other than the constant victim-blaming that happens damn near every time someone gets raped or assaulted, there's not a rape culture at all in America.
