I'm utterly fascinated by how this thread has been pending green -- but not released, nor commented (until now) -- for more than two days, despite being noted for release "one hour from now" the entire time.

say what you will about the overal utility of the kinnect, the exercise options are quite good for someone looking to increase their health in the comfort of their own home

I actually saw the timer tick down, looked once and it said '44 minutes' from now, 20 minutes from now, 1 hour from now, etc.

Meanwhile, other things that went green just jumped

Yup. Count me in as one of the people who loved playing the Dance Central games and am anxiously awaiting a version for the Kinect 2.

/got surprisingly good at that game.

Polygon has some decent opinion pieces, but this one's a little silly. It's just a variation on, "Dance Dance Revolution / Wii Sports helped me lose weight by getting me up off the couch and making me more active!"

I bought an exercise bike with a desk attached to hold my keyboard and mouse or controller so I can game while I work out. It's great, and has helped me lose weight. Should I write an opinion piece on how my Playstation 3 and gaming rig got me exercising an hour a day?

Actually, it's a little difference. This isn't someone who just needed to lose some weight. This gal has a disease, exercise helps greatly, but the PT was showing no results for her. Having something entertaining to do has allowed her to start getting this under control, and not hurt all of the time.

I can sympathize with the PT thing. Not only is it boring, and takes a ton of time out of your day if you have to go in for it, it's hard to see results and get released far before there has been any improvement. In the meantime, you're in pain 24/7. I don't think this one is silly.

But then again, I think the stories about how these active games are helping people get healthy are a good thing.

I had one a few days ago that was scheduled for "3 hours" then "2 hours" then "10 hours", but finally went green at the originally scheduled time. I guess the mods wanted to keep it at the top of the greenlit tab for a bit to attract more TF posts?

I think the angle she was going at is that the Kinect is unique in its ability to track and provide feedback to the user, and thus has value beyond the standard "it got me off the couch" gimmick, particularly to people with physical challenges.

I can't lie I'm the same and I'm the whitest dude with no dance skills.  Supposedly the Kinect 2 is too sensitive for Dance Central and they have to dumb it down or it will be too hard.  I compete against this girl I know all the time to see who gets the higher points.  One of the Lady Gaga songs she got an insane score that I couldn't even come close to matching.

CSB:
About 2 years ago I was pretty overweight. I got Kinect Sports and played boxing for increasing amounts of time (30, then 45, all the way to 90 minutes) every other day, then every day and lost 40 lbs in about a year.

It's a pretty decent cardio exercise if you play on the second hardest difficulty (the hardest you are blocking/resting too much). Note: I also changed my diet, and exercising with anything for an hour or so a day will burn off pounds. But, I had fun, and it works out your chest, arms and to some extent legs pretty well!

Yeah, that struck me as very odd. I started wondering if there was a bug or something, so I threw in a post to see if it tipped something over. Then I got scooped on teh b00bz1es anyway. ;)

Disclaimer: I am a member of the PC Master Gaming race, so I own no console and no Kinect/Move thingy.  However, I've seen many a reviewer just farking trash the damn thing, mainly because they simply couldn't get it to work consistently.  (Angry Joe lives up to his name whenever he reviews a Kinect game, for instance.)  It might be ok for an exercise or dance simulator, but beyond that, it's just broken.  And, since a very large percentage of gamers have no interest in play dance or exercise "games", and it's broken for everything else, it seems unnecessary to force people who have absolutely no interest in it to pay more for their console due to it.

While I certainly dance like a white dude, and I'm by no means a professional dancer, I can attest that Kinect + Dance Central has helped me with the ladies and my moves - enough to win a dance competition. I wouldn't mind a more precise dance game.

It's a kit from Adafruit (the flower logo) that gets you everything you need to make a Tor compatible onion router using a Raspberry Pi (which is included)

Neat article. CSB: We have two daughters (6 and 4). Our 6 year old has something going on with her knees where she would wake up 1 - 3 times a week with stabbing pain in one knee. Since we got the Kinect and she's been doing it regularly (playing the Disney dance games, Nick Dance 1 & 2, Kinect Party etc) it's been happening a lot less often.

It depends on the game. A number of the games are actually pretty accurate... but some are just farking awful.

It's a very good workout. When people come over, see the Kinect and make snide remarks about it not being a real workout I get them to try UFC Personal Trainer. :D
