Nope, just one that generates more power than it consumes. See the Farnsworth fusor link above. Lossy fusion is trivial.

So, uh. Kinda light on the actual, y'know, fusion reaction stuff.

machoprogrammer: Isn't a fusion reactor impossible with today's knowledge of physics?

No.

In the case of the Farnsworth Fusor, there is actual fusion going on, it's just that you're pumping more energy into the reaction than you are getting out.

As far as we know, there isn't any reason why we can't have a controlled, sustained nuclear fusion reaction that produces useful amounts of energy.  We just haven't figured out the engineering yet.  It's harder than we first thought*, but by no means impossible.  It's just a matter of coming up with the right way to do it.  It's not like we're trying to violate a hard physical law like the speed of light or conservation of momentum, it's more along the lines of breaking the sound barrier:  We know it can be done, we just don't know how at the moment.

*The running joke since the 1960's is that safe, clean fusion reactors are just 20 years away.

I've always sort of hoped that the Bussard Polywell would work. It's like the "ultimate" version of this kind of reactor.

Oh well... Some day... :-)

/...Last I heard, it was 50 years... maybe they're closing in... ;-)

There have been benchtop fusion reactors for quite a while. You're thinking of fusion power.

No, the physics are well-known and well-established. What's difficult is the *engineering*. Get to work, Wollowitz!

FTFY.

Dense plasma focus seems to be the most promising these days, and these guys are trying to raise some extra cash to pay for a specialty made electrode they deem required to pull it off.

But the guy in TFA - he's just a step up from playing with magnets.

So either he'll change the world or blow it up.  Either way it'll be interesting .

Releasing energy from fusion is cake. Containing it and converting it to energy we can use/store is hard. Generate is an acceptable term for that.

No, it just takes several imperial farktons of energy input.  Way more than what we can get out of the fusion reaction at the moment.

Well, *CONTROLLABLE* fusion with a net energy gain is hard.  Uncontrolled fusion with a net energy gain is comparatively easy.

Tis true. My 7th gr grandfather was a settler of Montgomery county (helped name it that), and every generation up to and including my father were born in the area.

I was born in NoVA and thus, even considering all of the above, I'm an outsider.
