Finally, it was taking forever for me to teach fruit flies to moonwalk the old fashioned way.

Don't scientists have something better to do with their time?

/would totally screw with flies' brains if I could.
//because fark those guys.

I work in the "laboratory in the United States" that developed FlyMad.  It is both amazing and hilarious technology.

There is a little glass dish with a camera filming it. In real time, image processing determines the position and orientation of the fly, and then aims a laser at it's head.  The laser heats it up enough to trigger temperature sensitive neuron mutations; so they can isolate one of the hundreds of kinds of fly neurons, and then see what happens when you fark around with it turning it off or on.

Initially they just used a hot room to fark with the fly brains but that wasn't nearly as cool as using a laser like a brain light switch.

The genetics stuff they do to actually put the temperature switch in a specific kind of neuron is also really cool.

And then they show the video of a fly where the temperature control is in one of its courtship control neurons, and the laser causes it to try and mate with balls of wax.
