(io9)   When it comes to architectural futurism, no one did it better (and weirder) that the Soviet Union   (io9.com ) divider line

Soviet architecture is always fascinating.  When you aren't constrained by things like feasibility or common sense you can do amazing things.

Why was the future always rendered in massive chunks of concrete?

I'll take weird over flat out butt ugly, which seems to be the futurist look they were aiming for with federal buildings in this country.

good ol' city of fAith.

Oral Roberts & now just across the street is anal Johnson's finally giving Tulsa a choice between oral and anal.

On a side note, all the new buildings in Tulsa lately look like they are soviet style block buildings with nothing architecturally appealing in the least.

Didn't see any "weird" buildings in that but I do say that most are much better than what is being churned out today.

Most of those wasted an incredible amount of space.

I've hated breezeways ever since Elementary school. My school had one between the classrooms and the cafeteria. It blew hot wind in the summer and cold wind in the winter. It was always a relief leaving the breezeway. Always.

We had one at my high school.  I am so old, I went to school at a time when smoking was allowed there if you were 18.  Basically that meant once one or seniors where there, all the smokers would be there.  It also meant that once a couple smokers showed up kids would start smoking weed.  High school in the 70's rocked.

We were always jealous of other schools near us that had smoking areas. You didn't even have to be 18. My school also had a closed campus so you couldn't even leave at lunch to go somewhere to eat. Once you were there, you were there until the school day was over.

Wife and I farked like teenagers stayed in the Hotel Pirita on Easter weekend (97); it was practically empty.  Pretty damn luxurious and super cheap.  Way better than the Hotel Tallinn across town.

True, inasmuchas he didn't follow that school.

But the man was doing stuff in the 1910s that looked like it was from the 1950s.
