It's the 'struggle back' part that is making me ask, 'Why?'

"Cool"? Interesting, I guess, but "cool"?

Hundreds of people waded through thick Essex river mud in a variety of outfits to raise money for charity

Ohhhh.... That's cool.

Behold! I give you the best way to move over mucky mud without standing water:

s22.postimg.org

If it's got over a foot, like these fools have found, just swim the damn thing:
news.bbcimg.co.uk

But if it's got less than a foot of water you're kinda farked relegated to walking and mucking.

Good thing they didn't do this on Back River in Essex, MD. They'd still be stuck in the ooze...

Sounds like fun. I remember when I was young enough to go play in the mud without having ti invent physical challenges and charity for an excuse.

This. and I seem to recall that, even as a tall man, the guy that was doing it was basically up to his neck.
He did win though, IIRC

just one pint?  what difference will that make?

Only 1 beer?  Why bother?

I'm in the "just one pint?" crowd... make it a picher and then we'll have some entertainment.

According to the Wikipedia page, there's no more beer. People just run across the river, up the muddy bank, and back across the river.

Which is just a damned shame.

Different river, same context.

According to the wikis, he's the only person to have done that for hundreds of years.

Do you know which one it was?  When I use the Googles with "top gear river crossing race" all I get is the Africa Special where they use that barrel raft to ferry their cars across a river, which, while funny as hell, is not what I'm thinking of...
