RoomFullOfMonkeys: Cadbury chocolate is disgusting.

No, as far as your average corner shop chocolate goes Cadbury is fine. Hershey is the true monster of the chocolate world. How they even sell enough to keep going is beyond me. I've never tasted anything so foul.

Because most people don't want chocolate. They want semi chocolate flavored sweetened food.

Personally it all tastes the same to me. Only stuff I've ever found that I'd go out of my way to buy was the salted chocolate from my local store, has nice chunks of salt crystals in it.

I'm not much on Cadbury, either, but Hershey's tastes like wax to me. It's awful. I like Reese's cups, though. I prefer dark chocolate, so my opinion on milk "chocolate" may be skewed.

They add almonds to it. Regular Hershey's is brown paste, but add those almonds and it's a whole other thing.

Probably ordered some cocoa butter from China that was cut with lard.

It's not chocolate. But, as M&M/Mars and Hershey have followed suit, what can you do but stop buying cheap-ass "chocolate?"

PGPR, gelatin, and other additives meant to replace the expensive cocoa butter have no place in good chocolate. Never mind what these assholes have done to their established candy bar lines - the fact that they're now selling this shiat as "chocolate" is offensive to me. I like chocolate.

Don't blame China on this one - they probably did it themselves. These assholes are trying to find anything, anything, that they can use to cheaply replace cocoa butter in chocolate.

The last time I made a statement like that, the butthersey brigade swooped in with the fury of a thousand brown noses to crush my soul and assure me that there's no wax in Hersey's chocolate. Come to think of it, I still get a warm glow inside when I think back how an innocent (but very truthful) statement like that was able to rile up so many vagina centipedes.

Yes. For example, gelatin isn't an ingredient in chocolate. It's in a lot of "chocolate candy coatings" and such, but not in chocolate itself. If your chocolate contains anything other than  cocoa butter, cocoa liquor, sugar, lecithin, and vanilla, start asking why. Some additives, like milk, are meant to be there. Some, like PGPR, gelatin, and vegetable oils, are not meant to be there. If you're buying "chocolate" containing those latter additives, you're probably getting ripped off.

It does to me as well, thanks to the additives Hershey places in their "chocolate." Hershey is a huge proponent of PGPR.

Mr Hershey was after a US Army contract for emergency rations. The specification said it should, "taste a little better than a raw potato."

Nailed it.

You're going on endlessly about how the Maddog 20/20 you bought 4 for a dollar is vastly inferior to some artisan crafted single malt wine.

I.e. you're not 'getting ripped off' when you buy Hersheys unless you're expecting it so somehow magically not be what it's always been and was always intended to be, a sweet chocolate flavored thing. That shiat's a dollar for a hundred pounds, what the hell do you expect?  No one who 'likes' chocolate enough to biatch about its ingredients should ever deign to eat it, you should be out eating, I dunno, something hand crafted in the alps or some shiat.

Do you also biatch endlessly about how chocolate flavored gum/lollipops don't contain chocolate? Or that chocolate stout doesn't contain actual chocolate?

I don't keep Kosher/Halal but I wouldn't want to eat chocolate that had pig DNA in it.  Pig DNA in the product means pork or a pork byproduct was included in the chocolate, and since only 2 of the 3 batches contained the DNA, it wasn't supposed to. I don't trust food products that contain ingredients they aren't supposed to, especially when this is news to the manufacturer. The 2 batches in question may have been perfectly safe to eat, but something has clearly gone wrong with the manufacturing process or supply line, and that is an unacceptable risk when food is involved.

On a related note I actually like Hershey chocolate. I've had Cadbury before and I've had chocolate that has been much better then either, but Hershey chocolate is something I enjoyed in my youth. As such I've gotten used to the particular flavor of that chocolate. Dark chocolate to me tastes too bitter, and while I do like fine milk chocolate, the good stuff is often a bit too sweet. The thing to remember is that Hershey's was one of the first companies to mass produce cheap chocolate. For many people in America it was the first chocolate they ever tried and the one they eat the most. Because of this familiarity many prefer it to higher quality chocolate.

So, you're both happy paying the same price for a product that is produced with cheaper and cheaper ingredients? Huh. And you think I'm the fool...

A Hershey bar is something like 75 cents.  What did you expect for 75 cents?  Hell I remember when they'd be on sale for 35 cents back in the 90s.

Want better chocolate?  PAY MORE, dumbass.
