17 feet deep is deep enough if you know what you are doing but if he went to into shock from breaking a bone, that ends things very quickly.

twiztedjustin: 100 feet will kill you no matter how deep the water is.

Dana Kunze held the world high diving record at 172 ft (52.42 m). Then there was  Oliver Favre who dove 177 ft (53.94 m) into open water in 1987 in France.

Never aim straight down. Angle slightly so when your feet hit they start to move forward, let your body follow through, and you'll end up going horizontal under the water instead of into the mud. Keep your legs together, point your toes and keep your arms in as well.

That said, as you get older you feel it more and more. I stopped jumping off tall objects into the water when I hit 35. At 50, you'll be lucky to get me to cannonball into the deep end from the side.

/belly flops also stopped a LONG time ago

Ex-Texan: We have the ol Hamilton Pool near Austin,a collapsedlimestone cave, where in the '70s, and on private land, you pay the farmer a few bucks to go through the barbed wire, and jump off the top, a bit over a hundred feet, there were a few rocks there, occasionally, you'd hear of someone hitting one. A few people paralyzed, a couple killed. This was before the rancher gave it to the state. It's slowly undergone "improvements, making it nicer, or as I tell my kids "Gay it up".NTTAWWT. If you swim to the center, you can try to swim to the bottom, but I've never touched it. you get water dripping off the limestone, that's really cold.
As I've been told about rappeling "it's not the fall that kills you, but the sudden stop at the end". It was a lot of fun, until it wasn't.
BTW, the Six flags reference was funny as Ph^ck. I really laughed out loud when I read it.
Alcohol NOT involved. Really?

You do know that saying "NTTAWWT" doesn't make what you did there ok, right? Or are you one of those people who says "with all due respect" a lot?

Tyrone Slothrop: If video games have taught me correctly, he should be fine. You can fall any distance into chest-high water or deeper without suffering injury.

Unless you super-bad-ass character for some reason has no ability to swim.

Why the hell would a 50 year old man be jumping into water from 100 feet?  At that height you're entering the height range that kills regardless of how deep the water.
