Valerie Plame is a lot prettier. Republicans outed her for all the usual reasons, plus they resent women who are that beautiful.

2014-05-26 11:03:52 AM
Trying to equate this to the whole Plame/Wilson/yellow cake affair is pretty desperate.  Just examine this as a standalone event.  Whoever put his name on the list is incompetent.  Whoever checked it and didn't catch the error is incompetent.  Nothing comes out of any White House without being checked and re-checked and then approved.  Whoever authorized the release is incompetent.

I doubt there is anyway any of this could ever be tied. directly or indirectly, to Obama.  I doubt any President reads 99% of White House releases.  But it appears he does have more than one incompetent person on his staff.

Now for a snarky comment:  If the news media doesn't report this, Obama will never know about it.

No, it's not quite EXACTLY THE SAME.  In 2006, a low level desk agent was outed by someone in the state department and democrats, including Sen. Obama, blamed the White House and demanded the appointment of a special prosecutor.  In this case, a real spy was outed and the White House really is to blame, and no special prosecutor will be appointed.  So those differences come to mind.

This is a major fark-up, I'll agree with that.  However, I find it hard to put it at Obama's feet, and I have to wonder if the people who are putting it there really think the head of every large organization reads every single piece of correspondence sent to the press.

I think Obama's response to it will be more telling than the fact that it happened.  Heads will and should roll.

The administration (whichever one is in power at the time) should just hire a new person each week with the explicit aim of firing him/her on Friday as a scapegoat.  Blame all of that weeks fark-ups & scandals on the sacrificial victim and throw him/her under the bus (with a generous severance package).

It'd be less disruptive to the administration as a whole.

"Wilson said that after the report was distributed, he noticed the unusual reference to the station chief and asked White House press officials in Afghanistan whether they had intended to include that name.
Initially, the press office raised no objection, apparently because military officials had provided the list to distribute to news organizations. But senior White House officials realized the mistake and scrambled to issue an updated list without the CIA officer's name."

It sounds like the White House Press Core are the ones that discovered the error. Just after the fact...

FTA: Initially, the press office raised no objection, apparently because military officials had provided the list to distribute to news organizations.

So who's in bigger trouble, I wonder -- the "military official" who provided the original list with the error on it or someone in the WH press office who released it without catching it? I don't know if they routinely double-check stuff like that first or not.

During the George W. Bush administration, the mainstream media was in a crazed state of obsession over the so-called "outing" of Valerie Plame, who many argue (including her own supervisor ) was outed by her own husband, Joe Wilson.

If anyone believes the CIA Chief of Station isn't known to those they hunt, I have a cookie for them.

It's the people that work for the Chief who need double-secret cover. But, hell, all the super secret types use non-official cover anyway.

They have to publicly announce those they send on official cover. I'm sure the vaunted 101st Keyboard Commandos know that.

Sorry, boys and girls, the president isn't stupid, this was done on purpose; the chief must have displeased the administration.

P.S. I don't care if you think the impossible is true, that they somehow let it slip their mind.

Put it to you this way: There are some things that people don't ever do unless it's on purpose, and when an organization obsessed with keeping things from you (the WH) lets that slip, it's on purpose.

Go on believing childish lies that they were dumb enough to let a major secret slip, on paper even where they knew what they were writing and definitely double-checked.

Stop being so gullible.

THIS. Outing the station chief is a classic double-reverse ropadope with a rebound off the backboard maneuver pulled off by our idiotic, bumbling, incompetent evil genius mastermind "President". You'd have to be blind, ignorant fool to think it's more likely this is a simple mistake by a low-level staffer.

the chief of station is almost always declared to the host government. the one in kabul is declared. there are many agents and officers of the cia that are declared and are known to their host government contacts. they work together and relay intelligence in both directions. the person in that position is a senior level (equivalent to SES/SFS) and there are only a few countries they could go to. In any country they go to...they would already be declared anyways.

declaring them to the rest of the world...not so much.

also, the headquarters of the cia is a known address is kabul. it's mentioned in ghost wars by stephen coll. it was somebody else's headquarters before theirs. sort of a symbolic FU. a simple google search will give a lot of news.

i worked in kabul for two years for the Embassy.

Really? You're telling me you don't remember all the pictures of president Bush as a chimp? You see the word chimp(ski) and you associate that with a black person? Who's the racist here?

Are you really that ignorant not to know comparing black people to monkeys has been a racial slur for over a century?

Of course not, but using the context of this thread, I believe the original poster was referring to the bush/chimp pictures. You are the one that brought race into the conversation.

Turn about is fair play and all that.

Pointing out a historic fact is racism now. I'm the real racist. Got it.

Actually, I see that it was ghare and not you that brought race into the mix, so there's that. I am just pointing out that maybe, sometimes, people see racism when it is not really present. I don't see where the original comment was about race so much as about the double standards applied to the current president and the former one. Again, who brought race to the table?

If the shoe fits...

So if I refer to Obama as a "person who annoys me", and you tell me that's racist, you're the real racist because you understood the obviously racist comment? That makes no sense.

How is "a person who annoys me" an obviously racist comment. So yes, if I shouted "racism!" Over that comment, I would be bringing race into a conversation where it did not exist. I believe that playing the race card anytime I don't agree with what is being said is a firm if racism.

Obama is Dubya on 'roids in many ways.  Sure, some social positions are different, but the policies  are still making Americans poor and take away our rights and freedoms. And he's been lying to everyone, just like George W. Bush(and his father H.W.).

Both parties are run by rich people.

You know we don't have troops in Ukraine, right?

Look, Obama has overseen the largest expansion of civil freedoms in 50 years with his actions on gay marriage.  He's in the process of ending 2 decade-long wars perpetrated by his predecessor.  He has over and over again achieved significant foriegn policy victories with diplomacy alone.  His signature domestic accomplishment has forever changed the nature of poverty in America, in that it no longer carries a death sentence.

If you really think Obama is "as bad as Bush" that's only because you're not paying attention.

No, I used to think something almost along those lines, but ignoring people is a right everyone needs to enjoy from time to time.

If someone in real life calls me stupid, without irony or jokes, I ignore them. Why would I break that rule online?

And ignoring some people does teach others to be nicer. Yes. Not all or most, but some for sure, which is positive.

Got it.

You were wrong and didn't get what he was initially referring to. Just own up to it and move on.

udhq:  I will now present the Republican spin machine's response.

Look, Obama has overseen the largest expansion of civil freedoms in 50 years with his actions on gay marriage consistently gone against the word of God by allowing teh gheys to violate the holy institution of marriage.  He's in the process of ending 2 decade-long wars perpetrated by his predecessor costing America hundreds of thousands of jobs in both the government and private sectors, as less troops are needed in the military and less military supply contracts are being awarded.  Cutting costs and balancing the federal budget?  I move to table discussion on that topic until the next time a natural disaster on American soil leads to Americans crying out of for handouts from Uncle Sugar.  He has over and over again achieved significant foriegn policy victories with diplomacy alone made America look weak and appeasing by relying on talk instead of action.  His signature domestic accomplishment has forever changed the nature of poverty in America, in that it no longer carries a death sentence massively increased the number of people in poverty who depend on government aid.

If you really think Obama is "as bad as Bush" that's only because you're not paying attention-he is truly history's greatest monster.

That was my claim, and yes, it's true.

8-30 million Americans were legally considered sub-human under DOMA, and while this hasn't been fully corrected, the progress that has been made since 2008 is unprecedented in the post-Civil Rights era.

I'm not clear on what you're getting at then. Now you're saying the person at the White House serving as a conduit to the press should have recognized the name and omitted it after it came from whoever in the military chain sent it to them? Or that all press releases should be reviewed by someone who does? Someone farked up, but I'm not sure where the blame lies.  Seems like the first place to start is with whoever it was in whatever department it was that sent it over to the White House in the first place. I don't know what the routine is for members of the White House press staff when info is funneled through them, or how closely they would typically review it, so I don't know what the extent of anyone's culpability would be when the blaming starts.

Weird thing is that it was someone (or someones) in the press pool that caught it, though I got the impression it was the title rather than the name that caught their attention.

I was a member of the PSD team responsible for most of the high-ranking visitors in Kabul last year, including Chuck Hagel, The Chairman of the Joint Chiefs, Secretary of the Army, Navy, and the Supreme Allied Commander of Europe. Naturally a lot of these visits involved meeting with the top officials in Kabul. I've heard General Dunford's "What does winning look like" speech enough time's I could probably give it myself. It's pretty likely I've met whoever this guy is, though I didn't know it at the time and still don't.

Anyone know this 'outed' official's name?

taurusowner: It's almost like Obama is deliberately reenacting the scandals of past presidents just to see if we'll hold him to the same fire as we did them. Everything from the Nixon-esque use of the IRS to target political enemies, Benghazi, Fast and Furious, Holder's perjury, The VA scandal and now this. It's like he's flaunting the fact that he knows no one will hold him accountable for the same things that we would have held any other president accountable long ago.

I would only be half surprised if he ended up trying to get a beej in the Oval Office and leaking the facts about it, then lying to Congress in person just to get away with something Clinton was impeacher for.

it's just Obama's white half at work

When Obama burns you, you've got nothing: no cash, no credit, no job history. You're stuck in whatever city they decide to dump you in. You do whatever work comes your way. You rely on anyone who's still talking to you. A trigger-happy ex-girlfriend... An old friend who used to inform on you to the FBI, family too... if you're desperate.

Bottom line? If Obama burns you... you're not going anywhere.

July's issue of Playboy will have the annual star spangle photo spread of the ladies of the federal government.  See Rebecca a CIA officer who likes drinks with friends and hates men who don't use coasters as she is unveiled in a most public way.

At news stand and on line available June 27

There's not really much of anything here to worry about.

'Your name may have slipped out to the local press.  Better swap jobs with the station chief in Iraq for a while.'

The person (heretofore unnamed) who was responsible for sacking the earlier guilty parties; has been sacked. We are withholding any/all names from the press so we can place blame on the next innocent newbie we need to hang out to dry; next time someone important screws up.

trappedspirit: Out of all the names they could have gotten wrong, misspelled, omitted or included erroneously they expose the name of the guy whose name should never, ever be released.  Looks like somebody needed to be sent a message.

Um, station chiefs aren't deep cover. They are known to the host country and other intel agencies although it is true that their identities are not made public. Being outed is a screw up, but not that big a deal.

Conservative projection. You all should work for IMAX. If Obama purposely outed someone for political reasons then he should go down, just like Bush didn't.

taurusowner: It's almost like Obama the right-wing noise machine is deliberately reenacting raising the specter of the scandals of past presidents just to see if we'll hold him to the same fire as we did them they can get any of their bullshiat to stick to the wall. Everything from the Nixon-esque use of the IRS to target political enemies, Benghazi, Fast and Furious, Holder's perjury, The VA scandal and now this. It's like he's flaunting the fact that he knows no one will hold him accountable for the same things that we would have held any other president accountable long ago they know there's people gullible enough to buy into anything they say, and they can fleece them for millions of dollars.

There, fixed that for you.
