Some of those places are OK if they have good drink specials.

I'm no foodie, but I agree with pretty much the whole list, with the exception of Red Lobster and Olive Garden. I know I've been to those places, but I can't remember what their food tastes like. There are just too many great seafood and italian restaurants around here, so no one ever says, "hey let's go there."

I always enjoy getting drunk and thrown out of Applebee's.

Meh, I can handle Panda Express every now and then.  It's just fast food, but in a pinch, it's different.

All of those places suck rhino taint. Now we need a boxed wine biatchapalooza.

It's beyond me why anyone would care where and what other people eat.

And I was a chef for a living.

Do you honestly "like" any of those restaurants? I mean, if I'm hungry enough, and there's nothing else around, I'll go to those places. But I live in a region where better options are everywhere.

What's this guy's obsession with "overcooking"?

Panda Express and sbarro are restaurants?  I always considered them food court fast food.

Panda Express is awesome. It's like the movie Constantine. As long as you go in knowing what it is, and not expecting something truly "authentic," then you're going to be all right.

2014-05-25 10:59:10 PM
So you can actually make a living writing about how chain restaurants suck?

Huh.

One doesn't have to be a foodie in order to realize that there's far better food out there than Red Lobster and Olive Garden.

I find it annoying that TFA kept saying "You could just stay home and make it in your own kitchen" as if going to a restaurant weren't something you do because you DON'T FEEL LIKE COOKING TONIGHT or DON'T WANT TO COOK FOR A LARGE GROUP.

Not really like per se, but they're ok, like you said, when there's nothing else around.  I have to admit I actually seek out an On the Border once in a while, so I really can't criticize what anyone else eats.

I don't know why people dis Olive Garden. I made their "Stuffed Chicken Marsala" recipe this weekend and it was awesome. I also make the Cheddar Bay Biscuits from Red Lobster. What's not to love?

Speaking of On the Border, I need to get their salsa recipe and make that at home too, it is delicious!

With the exception of the local grill-less Chili's, I miss being able to go to every single place on that list.  Food here sucks.  I farking crave Olive Garden, Applebee's, and Red Lobster; and I'm stuck with an unsanitary and disgusting Denny's, and an even worse Chili's.

They are too expensive for the author.  Maybe he'll review Jimmy Johns for his next article.

lindalouwho: It's beyond me why anyone would care where and what other people eat.

I care because sometimes the fact that other people think that those places aren't awful leads me to eat at those places. Some of these are relatively innocuous because, at the very least, they're cheap. Red Lobster gets a special hatred because it's not even cheap. Maybe cheap for seafood, but it's not cheap. I'd rather go to farking Denny's. Sure, it still sucks, but it sucks at 1/3 the price.

2014-05-25 11:18:51 PM
I only like 2 of those places, Chili's and Olive Garden, and really only go to 1, Olive Garden. Like the author said, the breadsticks and salad are great. If you get a good waitrress that will let you mix and match things off the menu, it can be a great meal for the $15 you're spending.

2014-05-25 11:19:11 PM
I eat at Applebee's once a year: when it's free.

I eat at Red Lobster or Olive Garden when someone else chooses and is paying.

Otherwise, I don't eat fast food with the exception of the rare, once every other month or so pizza (and yes, I consider both Olive Garden and Red Lobster to be fast food. Anytime Italian or seafood can be at your table in 15 minutes, that's fast food in my opinion). I call it 'stuff pretending to be food.'

it's been awhile since i've been there, but olive garden's endless salads were awesome once upon a time.

/not a foodie.
//but, the rest of those places pretty much suck, imo.

I've eaten at Olive Garden twice. The second time I went because i figured that there was no way it was as bad as I remembered it. But it was. Even the bread sticks were salty and disgusting.

I have never not been sick after Olive Garden. Would add Hooters to that list, but I suppose the first criterium is that food is served.

I do too.  To be fair though their food used to be much better 20 years ago.  At least when they were franchised to the East Coast where I live which was about 20 years ago.

/Got carry out yesterday and their menu has changed a lot

Nix Nightbird: I find it annoying that TFA kept saying "You could just stay home and make it in your own kitchen" as if going to a restaurant weren't something you do because you DON'T FEEL LIKE COOKING TONIGHT or DON'T WANT TO COOK FOR A LARGE GROUP.

It's not always.

The author is implicitly dividing all restaurants into two categories: those where you couldn't hope to make what was on the menu there in your own kitchen (and have it coming out tasting as good or better), and those where the food is no better than or different from what you could make yourself at home.

In general, really good restaurants fall into the first category, and restaurants that are bad or mediocre fall into the latter.  There are other considerations, however; for example, you might love Indian food, but lack the slightest idea of how to cook it at home.  Then ANY Indian restaurant would fall into the first category.

I make a pretty decent meatloaf, for example, but I couldn't make a kofta if my life depended on it.  If I felt like meatloaf, I could stay at home and bake my own, or I could go out to a Golden Corral and order one.  I don't have that option with kofta.

I ate at Applebee's several times while I was working in North Dakota. They had double captain and cokes for the price of a single on Tuesdays. Plus the food was consistently full of fat and high in sodium. Perfect when dining while working out of town.

Red Lobster is as good as any other non-ocean front seafood joint.

I agree, all of those places suck. There are much better restaurants out there, but people make their own choices.

The shock of that list for me was that Planet Hollywood and Hard Rock Cafe are still open and people still go to them.
