(New York Daily News)   Man is selling a piece of scrap paper with the word 'the' written on it on eBay and the bids have already reached $100. In other news, people will buy pretty much anything for ridiculous amounts of money these days   (nydailynews.com) divider line 50

I'd buy it and then sue on the basis that I thought I was getting the actual word - that is, the right to collect royalties on the word "the" from everybody.

But you would lose. He makes no claims of ownership.

That being said, I'm putting up my toilet brush. Bidding starts at $5.

I'd like to call in a buddy of mine to check it out but he's out of town right now. I'm going to go out on a limb and give you $5 for it.

Look... I'm taking all the risk here. It's not everyday you get someone come in here and ask for a scrap of paper with the word "the" written on it.

Is it "thee"or "thuh?"  This is important.

Collectors are holding their breath to see if the winning bidder is also holding pieces of paper with "what" and "fark" written on them.

Where's the provenance?  How do we determine it really is "The", instead of "A" or "An"?

No problem I will replace your word with one of my choosing and will give everyone a licence to so so at half price of what you are asking.

Our new word is zyf.  So you sir can sut the zyf up!  Pay no mind to zyf word in my login.  I am trademarking that as a symbol so it is no longer a word.

Sweatyman describes condition as "very good."  Not 'brand new with tags' but just 'very good.'

Too bad.  I'da bought the shiat out of a minty-fresh the.

How much for the little word?

Of course the bidder is an idiot, but is Sweatyman much brighter? Is it really worth $105 to do all that shiat for that?

It's an Australian The so it's not as valuable.

How much time could it have taken to make the item and post it to eBay, and then how expensive could the shipping possibly be? Seems like an easy way to make a fast buck.

I checked some of the bidders (the highest ones) and they had 100% feedback... so unless they want that to go down big time they will pay... but who knows.... some people have money to burn.

Sellers can't leave negative feedback for buyers.

People need to do their research before bidding.

I am pretty sure that this item isn't 'The THE' ; it's just 'a the'.

I thought you could report a buyer for not honoring the purchase agreement and thereby causing negative feedback... or at least it used to be that way back when I was ebaying... is it not that way any more?

You can report them, but it doesn't show up as feedback anymore.

And this guy has never been a seller before, so thinking someone hijacked his account, or he's just scrapping it altogether.

At worst, they go down one point, unless it turns into a full-on back and forth biatchfest in the feedback between them and the Aussie.

Most I ever went down was three points, some six or seven years ago--and that was after I PAID for three items, but only received one, and gave negative feedback to the seller, who insisted I was trying to scam him and gave negative feedback in return (which is why I hate the idea of reciprocal feedback--if a seller is honestly bad, why should a buyer get negative feedback for paying immediately on an auction's close but not receiving the item described and being truthful about the seller?). That's also the only negative feedback I've ever received because I don't bid on anything I can't or don't intend to pay for.

11k for "The?" I wonder if I could try auctioning off bits of paper with "a" "an" "and" and other common words and get a few grand to pay off bills...?

You can, but if it's a false report or an illegal sale, you are screwed. See my post above--that's what happened to the guy who kept up a pissing contest with me in feedback several years ago. He's no longer an eBay seller because he tried reporting me for violating the purchase agreement and I had the proof that he didn't send the merchandise (ordered 3, he sent 1. Tried resolving it with him, he refused to deal with me. Told me to "be a man!" I told him I couldn't "be a man, because I don't have the proper anatomy for that"). Apparently, he pulled the same stunt on other buyers, because after the third time, eBay removed him as a seller.

4. "Full"
5. "Of"
6. "Suckers"
