Something seems off here.  4'1" and 66 pounds is a BMI just over 19, which is damn near underweight, not even close to overweight.  I'm guessing there was an error in her measurements or the other fitness factors taken into account (basically running, pull-ups, push-ups, and stretching) put her in an "out-of-shape" category that's not actually "overweight."

I'm one of the outliers for which the BMI is a bad indicator. Admittedly, I could probably stand to lose 5-10 pounds, but the BMI classifies me as just below obese.

Why have people not figured out yet the BMI is a poor tool of measurement? Body fat percentage is much more accurate. Why isn't that measured instead?

Someone should go to the school office with a roll of stickers that say "75% Lean Ground Chuck", "FAT" and other similar statements and start slapping them on any portly administrators they find.

Everyone keeps mentioning BMI, but I didn't see it stated anywhere in the article that they used that.  Basically it seems that anyone that was over the average weight (which would be a single figure, no ranges or conversions) for their height got a "you fat" letter.  Wonder if everyone under the average weight got an "eat a sammich" letter.

Had an ad, so I didn't bother.  He says 1lb over index, article says over average.  Two very different things, but now I know why everyone was hammering BMI.  That being said, she isn't 1lb over index, she is 4.  For her height 62 lists as healthy.  Not that I think BMI is the perfect tool for health/weight indicator, but it is an easy place to start.

Why would she need to apply her zeal toward teaching? Single mobs are too busy working. Let the school handle all that.

yeah, this is why BMI is meaningless.

I'm roughly the same height (a little taller actually - not quite 5'10") and weighed *less* than you at  with a 29" waist a several years ago. Now I run 3 miles every morning and weigh 198. My BMI says I should weigh 168, but body fat measures say I'd have to have 0 pounds of fat and lose a few pounds of muscle/bone to accomplish that.

I'm in better shape than when I was skinny and I don't lift weights. My doctor says she wishes all of her patients were as healthy as me, my cholesterol and blood pressure are both excellent.

Most people look at me twice when I tell them what I weigh. -I look pretty much the same as I did when I was 165.

Now I have another friend that is slightly taller than me, weighs 180, can barely cliimb a set of stairs, has horrible cholesterol and blood pressure, and looks like a balloon but BMI says he's "Normal weight".

The kid in this article isn't fat. Hopefully it was just some mistake that will be corrected shortly. There is an issue with obesity especially in the U.S. these days, but BMI shouldn't be the only tool used to evaluate it. The real problem comes when BMI labels a kid like this fat, the *genuinely* fat kids decide that it must be completely bunk or that they must magically be muscular or big boned.

A dose of common sense and someone who cared enough to look over the results first could solve these problems before they make the news.

Oh, and before you go bragging about how skinny you are, you might want to realize that most women when they get pregnant don't want to weigh more than their spouse and a 5'7" woman could match your weight and still be considered "normal" by BMI standards. -You might want to hit the gym and bulk up a bit...

I hear you can get there in 26 minutes.

Most definately needs a scarf or feathered boa.

Who is funding these BS statistics anyhow? Girls that age do not need any help with body image issues.

2014-05-24 01:51:06 AM
By the way: what ever happened to the old skin caliper test? Or just body fat % in general since I think there are more modern ways of calculating it? Wasn't that a much better indicator of obesity than BMI?

No, actual category of "overweight." The school fitness folks messed up here, not the mom.

Well, guessing either 9 or 10 and using this calculator, she is.

It isn't as if someone at the CDC just sat down and drew some arbitrary farking curves to represent the distribution of weight at different ages and call it a day.

FTFA:
Speaking with the New York Post, Chevese Turner of the Bing Eating Disorder Association came out against the Fitnessgrams.
"Dieting, especielly for kids, is the gateway drug for eating disorders, and so is the public shaming that can come with this," she said, according to the outlet. "My organization and others believe that [Mass Body Index] report cards have no place coming from schools and can be more harmful than helpful."

Dafuq did I just read?

Oh, and [Mass Body Index]? Is that a number for how many people show up at church services?

Stupid people being put into positions where they have to judge others, based upon scales and units of measurements that are not only misleading but also poorly (if at all) understood by said people is... well... stupid! Thinking that the overall health of an individual can be boiled down to a few indicators is lazy at best and at worst, dangerous.

Do you know an easier and more accurate way to tell if someone is overweight.

farkING LOOK AT THEM.

Maybe the teachers need access to the notes,  if they don't.   Teacher looks at note, looks at child and from using their farking eyes makes a judgement.

In the case of this child the judgement would be that the  note is farking rubbish and it is ripped up and put in the bin.

Also I agree they should not be given to the children.

BMIs are a total crock of shiat. I'm a muscular man but I'm supposedly obese, my doctor told me that all those metrics are mostly bullshiat.  He says as long as you eat well, exercise and don't look like the Chris Christie you should be alright. Truth be told appearances and weight have less to do with overall health than you would think.

2014-05-24 02:09:56 AM
Just re-posting this image so I can fit in with the cool crowd that's been posting it...

img.fark.net

As for the "calculations" for labeling her overweight.. they are obviously some idiot's new set of measurements.. most likely a gov. official's kid or relative, maybe a 'squeeze' they bang once in a while (possibly both).
Like Diabetes; there are two entirely different sets of reading you can follow; one doctor I went to went by one set, the newer doctor goes by what she calls the standard, calling the other set, the "old" set.. so you do not know WTF to believe.
