As smart as I think? Probably not. Even planarians learn, and they don't even have a brain. Which explains the politics tab, really....

And yet Republicans.

Yet after all that decision making, they still dive right into my trash anyways.

They also have the highest concentration of sperm of any creature. They're the Peter North of the animal kingdom.

I bought a second hand car that had that as a bumper sticker. It also had "my mother made me a lesbian - if you give her the wool she can make you one too".

Scotch?  A cigar?  Those are only for lower life forms like fruit flies and Republicans.  The more evolved sit back and light a blunt, and have some Republican fruit fly flunky do their work for them...

Didn't take long for the partisan trolls to get here. Kinda like... fruit flies.

I'm not a partisan troll.  I just play one on Fark to annoy people who have less than 200 neurons...

There are two ways to parse that second sentence, and both are 100% accurate.

Not really how brains work. Neural networks and computers work very differently.

Computers brute force information analysis. The more information and the fewer resources you have to sort through it, the longer it takes because a lot of steps have to be taken to analyze each piece of information.

Neural networks weight information and then run it through comparatively fewer steps. If the weighted inputs reach a certain threshold, it provides an output. If a threshold isn't reached, more information is required to make the decision.

Different network structures and sizes are going to be better at different tasks, and larger is not always necessarily better. A larger overall network does have the advantage, however, of being able to structure and train various parts of the network to be better optimized for specific tasks.

So a neural network that is specifically trained for a given task will be able to more quickly process the information and come to a correct decision than one that needs to handle a variety of general tasks as well, but just scaling a network up isn't going to make it appreciably faster in most cases.

In the case of fruit flies, they have a very acute sense of smell, and their brains are structured to make use of it. Given the same inputs from this experiment, the fly probably makes a better decision more quickly than you would despite the difference in brain size.

Interesting stuff.  I bet the experiment was boring as hell, but I enjoy reading the end results.

Yeah, but can science explain why fruit flies are infesting my basement?  I mean, seriously--we had that whiff in the basement like something died in the crawlspace about 6 months ago, and then suddenly we had a shiat ton of fruit flies.  Repeated searches turned up no rotten produce (which wouldn't be in there anyway) and eventually the smell went away.  slowly the flies died out, helped by constantly refreshed traps.  Then, about a week ago, that smell again and more flies.  WTF?

I have a biologist friend who claims that water striders can also make decisions. Since there's a border collie that makes more accurate abstractions than Fox News or Louis Gohmert, I think the world is stranger than we've imagined.

So, fruit flies and partisan trolls are circle flies?

Making what decision?

So does this mean we need to start a fruit fly "I should buy a boat" meme?

Or cuz they're flies, would it be "I should buy a plane"?

// I should buy a plane. Or a boat. /// but I'm not a fruit fly.

//// or a cat.

Ooooh. Haughty fruit flies. Don't like bananas. What are you holding out for? Pears to soften? You'll die first, dumbo,.
