I worked for the army's weather modification research unit in the early 70s when I had to be in the army (first year of lottery and only year my number went). Possibly sent there because my degree is in meteorology. Can't speak for the other services, but any significant weather modification was definitely beyond them as was most insignificant stuff.

One thing a miss about the "pre-internet" days of early Art Bell... back then, fact and fiction were much harder to tell apart, at least for me.  One simply did not google something to see if it was the truth.   Or check snopes.  You sort of relied on the people around you.  There was a certain feeling, in my mind, that aliens or whatever could have been real - if only there were better lines of communication and the right person were in the right place at the right time with a camera.  The show really did feel like one of the few places people could share reports of such things.

And, well, look how that turned out.  Instant communication and a high-quality camera in every pocket in the world.  So much for the aliens.

Funny.  I'm nostalgic of ignorance.

That's just what they want you to think!  Obama and his cronies are using HAARP to cause droughts in California's Central Valley, thereby destroying jobs and punishing them for supporting Republicans in the state legislature!  And once he's proved the technology there, it's only a matter of time before he lays waste to all of the red states!  WAKE UP SHEEPLE!

There was a video I was prompted to watch ... of nonsense vague claims by 'scientists' about the dangers of HAARP. When I told the person who prompted me to view the video that I wasn't impressed, he went on about 'the claims the HAARP scientists' and "didn't you watch the video? They explain it there - the HAARP scientists!"

I guess it's always like that.
I get similar responses from those who want me to watch 'loose change' or 'killer robots are coming' videos.

"I saw the KR vid. Didn't say much of anything but "killer robots are coming, let's hope we use them good and not evil.""
"Yeah so you saw the video, how the guy talks about the killer robots. Killer robots!"
"Yeah, but he didn't really say anything. What's your opinion?"
"It's all in the video. Watch the video!"
"I did. Says nothing."
"Killer robots!"
"..."
"Did you watch the video?"

The only thing that's ever been genuinely worthy of a conspiracy theory was the Norway Light Spiral. Well, Morchella was speaking of his experiences in the 1970s -- pre-drone as we know them today. I would guess that if you're fighting a guerrilla war against a diffuse, scattered enemy that heavy rains might hinder them more than you. Or if you need to build runways during monsoon season, you might get some additional working days by causing the rain to fall upwind of you.

In any case, it seems like yet another example of preparing for the last war.  Controlling the rain in the jungles of Vietnam might be useful.  Doing the same in the deserts of the Middle East might not accomplish a whole lot.  And if Putin actually starts World War III, I suppose that diverting snowfall might be useful if the need arose to invade Russia in the winter, but I'm not sure it would really help that much.

One good thing about HAARP though. It's like a giant Rorschach blot you can use to out a closet conspiracy goof. Just mention HAARP, and within five minutes, they will have their tinfoil and radio jamming out, foaming at the mouth, and ranting about the Illuminati and how Pope Francis is the Anti-Christ because it speaks in tongues (AKA Latin to the more enlightened.)

anfrind: Hyjamon: AndreMA: anfrind: AndreMA: Morchella: Can't speak for the other services, but any significant weather modification was definitely beyond them as was most insignificant stuff.

I imagine mostly traditional cloud seeding with silver iodide, in an effort to either rain on the enemy or prevent rain on yourselves... probably with about as much success as it sees in agriculture...

What would the military do with the ability to control the rain?  Try to bury an enemy platoon in a mudslide?

Seems like a drone strike would be much faster and more effective.

Well, Morchella was speaking of his experiences in the 1970s -- pre-drone as we know them today. I would guess that if you're fighting a guerrilla war against a diffuse, scattered enemy that heavy rains might hinder them more than you. Or if you need to build runways during monsoon season, you might get some additional working days by causing the rain to fall upwind of you.

well, to be fair, the 70's will be close to 50 years ago...half a century...any advances in calculators, computers, robotics, probably seemed insignificant too at the time or beyond them.

I agree with your argument, but I am thinking more of a long con game in play.  if you can keep a region or country in drought for a decade or more, while you are an "ally" with that country, that can have significant strategic advantage.

I can see how a haarp program was born under the idea of causing rain tomorrow, but if they realized controlling climate for a decade or more can have an advantage, then it was all worth it.

I remember coming across a site a few years ago that thought the NWO/ZOG/UN/REPTILOIDS used HAARP to cause mass shootings like Columbine, so that the government could then take away all of our guns.  And then send us to concentration camps.

Good stuff.

Given it's location, officially stated mission, and the guys funding it, I always figured it was just an attempt to create electronic jamming in the ionosphere, in order to screw with Russian missiles in the event of war.  You know, since their missiles would be passing right over the Arctic.

I walked right into the control shack of HAARP in the mid 90s or thereabouts. Everyone on their lunch break was very confused when they trickled back in about 10 minutes later.

UseUrHeadFred: One thing a miss about the "pre-internet" days of early Art Bell... back then, fact and fiction were much harder to tell apart, at least for me.

You'd be surprised how fast fake rumors can spread in this day and age.

True, you'll be able to confirm it false in a short while, but by then, the damage is done.

Mister Peejay: AstroJesus: This is actually very bad news. The defense has failed and the Earth has been infiltrated. The Mother Ship can now advance. The light drones will arrive soon.  Stand on a hill some dark night this summer, and prepare for an alien invasion.

RoxtarRyan: I wonder how many of these people believe that this program controls weather, but at the same time say that mankind has no influence on the climate.

Is weather the same as climate?

There was a UN convention banning weather warfare, among other things, in the late 70s:  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Convention_on_the_Prohibition_of_Militar y _or_Any_Other_Hostile_Use_of_Environmental_Modification_Techniques

common sense is an oxymoron: 1. Government shuts down HAARP.
2. "HAARP clouds" continue to appear.
3. ZOMG!

Art Bell & Co. have nothing to worry about.

Maybe after it shuts down "climate change" disappears, CO2 levels drop like a rock, glaciers make a dramatic comeback and global temperature levels out. Just think of all the conspiracy theories that could happen!!

If the upcoming El Nino spikes global temperatures, will any conspiracy theorists blame the warming on the lack of HAARP?

It's not much of a conspiracy theory if it relies on the conspirators not doing something.

The government shut down HAARP to skew the data and make the climate change models look better.

Ladies and gentlemen, I submit that THIS is how you troll.  Not with outlandish comments, but subtlety, swiping at the very subconscious.  For instance, a double earworm that utterly ruins one's favorite song.
