I too wonder why they can't split up the ashes?
Unless these goof balls are homeopaths. What religion has a caveat about splitting up cremated ashes?
Sounds like bullshiat to me.

I don't believe for a second that either parent actually *wants* the ashes; they just want the other parent to NOT have them.

William and Lili Wilson's civil lawsuit against Goodman settled two years ago; the parents evenly split $46 million, before attorney fees, according to court records.

I have no idea what kind of relationship the deceased son had with his parents, but if it's anything like my relationship with my daughter, and like most relationships that I know of between parent and child, there's really no dollar amount that would ever be equivalent to having the person there in person with you.

That said, that's a lot of farking money. I mean seriously, that is some major life-changing stuff. Holy crap. So if your family member is going to get accidentally killed by someone (not something I'd ever wish on anyone, by the way), better it be a multi-millionaire than some drunken everyday joe.

Well as sick as it may be, it's not really a complicated concept to divide the ashes. Alot easier than dividing a child I'm willing to bet. I see it as a reasonable solution.

Pretty simple ruling to me.
Judge: Okay, let's divide the ashes 50/50
Wife: No, it's against my religion to divide the ashes.
Judge: Okay, your husband gets 50% or he gets them all, your choice!

While I agree with you about what it should be, a smart lawyer will cite Solomon's ruling and say therefore the wife gets the ashes as only she cared enough to refuse to cut the child in half.

Divide the ashes, make sure the pieces that contain the soul go to the religious mother, and the father can have the pieces that are just trace elements of bone, flesh & blood.

Having trouble telling them apart?
That's 'cause they're all the same!

Easy solution:

1. Scoop out fireplace or grill and dump contents into urn.
2. Present urn to ex and say "I'm sorry to have ever made this an issue. Of course the remains should stay with you."
3. Profit Keep the real cremains for yourself.

I just want to complain that when I started my custody battle I predicted what the outcome would be (more or less 50/50 timesharing) and offered to settle it quickly.

My ex wife waged legal war on me trying in many ways to find a way to deny me rights to my son for over two years.  When it was all said and done we emerged with...you guessed it...more or less 50/50 timesharing.

I never attacked her character; she tried (and failed) to attack mine in a number of ways.  Collectively we spent between $50K and $80K in legal fees (and she outspent me by more than 2 to 1).

All of that money could have been used to provide a more comfortable life for our child.  But it was much more important for her try and hurt me by taking him away.  Essentially she hated me more than she loved our child.

Custody battles can be sickening.

No no, if theyre homeopaths, dividing and diluting the ashes will make them stronger!

Most importantly, if they are homeopaths then the ashes actually contain his essence. Otherwise the urn simply contains a residue powder of  calcium carbonate, calcium oxide and iron oxide. Again, unless they are homeopaths there is nothing special about the ash, and it's absurd to try to fall back upon religion. Especially since there is no religion that I know of or can think of that talks about ashes at all. It's a super blatant attempt to get whatever she wants by trying to claim that her religion means she is in the right. It's really a rather disgusting use of religion. "OH no, no you don't, only I can get what I want because religion. So there!

Maybe but if the dialog went like in the above post, the woman is simply still exhibiting greed. This is because while she said she didn't want to divide them, she didnt offer to let the husband have them in leu of splitting them like in the whole Solomon story.

Let's see - they could store the urn in a columbarium at a cemetery. They could each visit (separately) whenever they wished. The judge could have ordered this and that would be the end of the feuding.

Or they could spread the ashes at some appropriate place.

I had a worse than crummy relationship with my first wife, and not once in the 18 years we've been divorced have I even said an unkind word about her to our children.
