"The School of Hard Knockers" sounds like a reasonable alternative.

Mixed feelings about that. I mean, "Kinki" is a venerable place-name in Japan; it's not their fault that it means something amusingly incongruous in English.

On the other hand, hahahahaha kinki university

I hear farking, Austria, also changed their name.

Also:

Kinki University will become Kindai University-a contraction of "Kinki" and "Daigaku" (university)

So now it will basically be Kinki University University? I'm sure they provide all the modern conveniences on their campuses, such as automated ATM machines.

Yeah , but the fact that it has as required classes a critical review of tentacle porn won't help things either.

Or Fukudai-a contraction of Fukushima and Daigaku. Or as we would say in Ingrish...Fuk U.

That and other names with 下 don't sound like the swear in English when you pronounce them, so I never found them all that funny.

The amusing fact TFA mentions, though, about the way they pronounce "city"/etc. because Japanese has no "si" sound? That still makes me LOL. Puriizu shiat down.

One time some years ago, I was in China and needed to find an ATM. I didn't know how to say this in Mandarin, so I went to a bank and asked the teller, "Excuse me, do you know where I find, um, the money-giving thing? ...You know, the thing like a little computer, where you put in your card and then press things, and it gives you money that is from your bank."

The teller was perplexed until her coworker blurted out "Ohhhh! A-T-M!" in a very thick Chinese accent, and I felt stupid indeed. :D

When I was doing computer memory sales back in the early 1990s, before memory became a dirt
cheap commodity, my main territory was Europe, and I wanted to know what the various words for
SIMM, CPU, and the like were in various languages.

Turned out they were SIMM, CPU, etc, so it wasn't a big thing.

/Most everyone I sold to spoke English, anyway.

Not the first time this would happen.  Supposedly, a Dr. Horney from Ball State University
(David Letterman's alma mater, in Muncie, Indiana) once tried to make a hotel reservation for
an out-of-town conference.  When he identified himself as "Dr. Horney of Ball State University",
the operator accused him of making dirty jokes and hung up.
