Cops will be believable when they show the cops shooting dogs and planting evidence on suspects.

Nelsom Mandela didn't think so.  So how is that racism that says black people can't get an ID working out for you?

Make state identification cards free. Not free with a signed affidavit, notarized, confessing to the crime of being poor. Free for everyone and easy to get. Not like Georgia that coincidentally closed every single drivers license office in the city of Atlanta at the same time they passed the voter id law. It was several years before they reopened an office in the largest city in the state. Think you can figure out the political and racial differences in the makeup of the majority of the city of Atlanta and the state legislature.

It's almost as if the trolls don't understand that South Africa has a national free ID and that they also don't try to restrict access to ID using offices in certain regions, nor do they restrict voting hours or not give busy polling places enough machines to get everyone in and out quickly.

Well I was trying to vote once when suddenly a horde of angry black men speaking some African Dialect were disgorged from a horde buses arriving from some Horde held territory.  I didn't know exactly how to react as they called out in badly accented English "For The Horde" and started pushing aside white voters as they rampaged through the voting center and voted multiple times like hordes of illegitimate voters are wont to do.  Then as randomly as they appeared, they left in their horde of Horde buses while saying "kekekeke" and probably off to commit voter fraud elsewhere.

Ah but you're forgetting only conservatives get to decide what's American and what is anti-American, e.g. the midwest, or "real America". Sorry, brah, you don't have a say. They have a monopoly on deciding what's American. Which is itself very goddamn American. Because they decided so. QED

first off, that wouldn't be fair to the GOP, secondly, it's simply a disgusting way to portray a society that prides itself on equality for ALL, thirdly, We the People would have to be reworded.

So there was this FARK thread about some country how successful their oil production was. Lots of right wing Farker came into the thread going on and on about how in the US we should treat Oil production like that other country...

Well until I pointed out that oil production was government owned and controlled. Then the Fark thread magically turned to right wingers saying we can't base anything on a different country because they are "too different".

I have no problem with voter ID laws, as long as the ID is issued for no charge. Otherwise it can be considered a poll tax, which is the general problem with these laws.

There's more than just the cost of the ID.  You may need documents such as a birth certificate (in NC that's $39 unless you want them to take their sweet time about it), and you *will* need transportation to and from the DMV.  And you may need to go quite far to find a DMV that's open on Saturday, or take time off from work.

No charge and easily accessible.

You can get forms and sign up at most government building or sign up for one online.

I would be fine with that.

Going to a bar, using a credit card.

Most people carry it in their wallet and you almost always need your wallet so why would you take it out?

The irony is that those you fight for voter ID the most are the exact same assholes against a national ID.

2014-05-21 07:48:27 PM
If "everyone" has an ID already, then lets make it so people can get one for free if they don't and they can sign up for them at government offices, like DMV or welfare offices?

Why wouldn't the GOP support this if they actually believe that "Everyone" has them already. If that's the case then this would cost almost nothing.

2014-05-21 07:49:14 PM
The concept of a voter ID plan is fine. The intended method of implementation as offered by the GOP is about as sinister as possible.

gingerjet: The irony is that those you fight for voter ID the most are the exact same assholes against a national ID.

Right because they see it as "Other people" needing an ID not them. It's like they are the same people who back the proof of citzenship laws. Even though they would flip out if it was applied to them.

My local DA isn't running for a higher office so he isn't trying to bust every liquor store and bar for selling liquor to minors.  So most places don't feel compelled to ask.  And IDs aren't required to use a credit card.

I don't always keep my wallet with me - especially when out running or cycling.  And when I use cash - why keep a wallet with me?  But this is all a silly conversation anyways.  IDs don't prevent vote fraud.  IDs don't prevent a lot of thing actually (like preventing the sale of liquor to minors) but Americans seem to have no problem brandishing their papers when ever a 16 year old behind a counter asks them.

Actually in California (and probably may other states) at least it's illegal to even enter a bar without an ID. So many check everyone's ID.

2014-05-21 08:28:14 PM
You're all missing the point of this voter ID nonsense. As long as the Republicans can keep people talking about whether or not voter fraud is a significant problem, people aren't looking quite so hard at forms of fraud that ID wouldn't prevent. Like corrupt election officials rifling through ballot bags and taking election data home, or electronic voting machines switching votes, or closing/restricting the hours of polling places in areas whose demographics favor the opposing party. And if they aren't looking at those, they're not looking at the party that's overwhelmingly behind them.

Talk about an apples to potatoes comparison.
