I was going to say something about statistics but then I'd just be validating subby's point (and also the politics tab)

Can't be doing that now, can we?

Why couldn't you play a baseball game using baseball cards? One player puts down a pitcher with such and such a BAA and the other player puts down a hitter with a high BA and whoever has the better stat wins.

That's a simple way, but I'm sure you could make it much more complicated and fun if you put some thought into it.

We used to do something similar but it always ended up with Jose Canseco rushing the mound and shredded cards everywhere. Good times.

Why didn't they make some kind of Strat-O-Matic/baseball card fusion? That would be kind of dope I think.

That's funny. I bought a deck-builder kit a few years back to play with my wife's nieces and nephews. I found the cards in a crate, took them to the comic store today, and sold them to recoup the original cost! That and I got a Carcassonne expansion for free. Glad I never got seriously into it.

Baseball is pretty nerdy but it is the one sport where they didn't even bother measuring how far the players run in a game because the players are too lazy.

Baseball teams play 162 games per season? The season is what, 6 months long? 162/6 is 27 per month so they play a game almost every day? I'm no sport fan but that seems like a lot.

Just going to add one point to this conversation: The reason MTG cards became so expensive is precisely because people were not speculating on them.  Whereas everyone was speculating on baseball cards and comics and whatever pile of paper is now stinking up their attics.  The fact that Magic: The Gathering cards got worn out through repeated playthroughs just made the gig sweeter.

Actually, it's worse. in D&D the players get to choose actions and are randomized by dice.

In Fantasy football you don't get to choose anything, you don't get to make a story, you are simply hitching your wagon along for the ride. It's completely passive. If it weren't 'America's Favorite Pastime (TM)' it would be depressing as fark.

It's more like magic cards. You build lineups, make trades, plan matchups and hunt for better players on waivers. Head to Head leagues are even more like card games. It's just sports so macho.

i do like how the balancing of early mtg cards assumed people would actually play for ante, which would have made a far more interesting game overall had people actually done it

Robin Ventura.

I heard a interview with him many years later (I think he was manager for the White Sox by then?) and he said he pretty much knew he was gonna get his ass kicked, but he had to charge the mound because of the situation and it was just "what had to be done according to the unwritten rules". Apparently Ventura wasn't much into fighting :)

I guess I just disagree? Fundamentally, you're playing reactive according to actions of other people, you're not controlling anything except swapping stuff in and out. It's no more/less competitive to me than betting on horses or playing bingo. You can't pick a suite of abilities to win the superbowl.

That.

Also, on one side you have kids that collect baseball cards -- with facts and figures about real people -- and then play baseball (not necessarily professionally; just play). On the other hand, MtG kids collect MtG cards -- with facts and figures about totally made-up fantasy crap like wizards and goblins and dragons and magic swords, some of which frequently break the game when combined with other cards -- and play with them, only to grow up and ... continue collecting them and playing with them.

Not that sports fans can't be sports nerds, what with memorizing batting averages and reciting games much in the same way D&D nerds like to tell you about their Paladin*, but they will always have one fact on their side: their stuff is based in reality.

I mean, if it makes them happy, more power to 'em, but MtG is far nerdier.

Watching games with people who have fantasy teams is really unpleasant. They don't give a damn about the game itself and they get all pissed off because a hand off when to a guy on another fantasy team instead of their fantasy team even though in reality they're both on the same damn team. It's like cheering for pickles on a hamburger before throwing it against a wall.

Magic: The Gathering is in a new golden age.  It's never been as popular as it is now.  There's never been a better time to play.

If you own an old shoebox of old old 1994 Magic cards, you might be sitting a few hundred bucks or more.

Working in a business that sells used goods, I can say flat out, sports cards are total dog turds. If you've got something vintage and cool (1950 and earlier), it's another story.

Got a box full of 80s, and 90s cards? Watch me laugh as I offer you $5 bucks for the lot and pray to FSM that I can make $20 off of your crap. Even at $20, a complete set from 93 takes months to move. Factor in labor and utilities, maybe it breaks out even. Beckett was/is nothing more than a massive con meant to rope in gullible stooges.

Easy ruling on which of two things is "nerdier": Which is less likely to get you laid? I know this whole nerd movement has gained steam in recent years and become more acceptable, but I played baseball and I played Baldur's Gate in high school, which one sounds like it would get you more action?
