Only sixty so far?

2014-05-21 01:44:02 PM
I guess that's 9 minutes more than they need to say "if you're not with us you support the terrorists!" with enough time left for a rousing "yeehaaaw!!"

2014-05-21 02:35:09 PM
That extra nine minutes is for standing ovations and chanting "U-S-A! U-S-A! U-S-A!"

But I thought that Obama was a hopeless dictator.  I don't get it, why would the House not take this opportunity to scale back his powers?

2014-05-21 02:49:05 PM
That's 10 more minutes of consideration than repeal used to get, so...step in the right direction, I guess?

Lee's amendment was co-sponsored by Republican Reps. Ted Yoho, Paul Broun, and Walter Jones

I'm not surprised. Jones has this odd streak of sanity that pops up now and again. It might have something to do with having both Camp Lejeune and Cherry Point in his district, and his constituents generally don't like being/having family or friends sent overseas and getting shot at all the time.

Someone should name it the "Allow Obama to Spy on Americans and Use the IRS to Investigate Conservative Political Group Authorization Act" or something with an acronym that spells OBAMASWANG.

the remaining 9 minutes will be spent warming up the laser before adjusting it to focus on jobs, only problem is it takes 15 minutes to warm up and someone smeared grease on one of the lenses.

Ted Yoho. Really. Just yesterday he was calling for only land owners being able to vote.

Not sure how I feel about this. If ted is for it there must be something I am missing.

the 9/11 aumf is pretty much the most destructive, corrupting piece of legislation ever passed

so of course it won't go away

From what I understand, Yoho co-sponsored an amendment advanced by Representative Barbara Lee, which would require a report of all military actions that have been justified with the 2001 AUMF; this amendment has already been defeated in committee. It did not include any language about repeal.

The "debate" referenced in the headline is over an amendment advanced by Representative Adam Schiff; the Schiff amendment is a full repeal of the 2001 AUMF that takes effect one year after the bill is passed.

Do you like having healthcare for the first time in your life? Are you going to vote for (insert congressperson) who voted to repeal your healthcare 73 times?

They are creating some great future political ads.

Well, in all seriousness, this issue seems to be gaining a (admittedly tiny) bit of bipartisan momentum. Both amendments in question were advanced by Democrats; one had three Republican co-sponsors even though it was defeated in committee, and the Republican House leadership seems at least willing to consider the second (and, IMO, far more important, since it's a full repeal) amendment, albeit briefly.

If there was one viable 'third party' instead of one for every political niche, then maybe. Especially if that one third party had anywhere near the organization required to compete on a national level. As it is, though, the third party vote is too split, and the third parties themselves too disorganized, for a third party vote to mean anything.

A better option, for now: Find R or D politicians who *are* against that, and support them. Meanwhile, get to work with your third party of choice. Help them organize and build a support base, so they can compete if/when the opportunity presents itself.

it's not that the third party vote is split, it's that third parties in a fptp system don't work. assume a populace where 60% of the country is liberal, and 40% conservative. but of the liberals, half are progressives and half are moderate. if there are two parties, the liberals win with 60% of the vote. if there are three, it's 30% prog, 30% moderate, 40% conservative, and the 60% loses.

there is no stable way for more than two national parties to exist in our system

Yeah that.   It grants unprecedented powers to the executive branch, and it was done so in a time of national pants-wetting panic.

The 10 minutes at least indicates someone noticed that we'd pissed ourselves.

I guess that's progress.

10 minutes is the measure of time between a congressman saying "wow this is a problem" and "wow that would take a lot of effort to fix"

You do know this logic is why the Iraq War happened in the first place?

Seriously, WTF.

I'll say it:

The AUMF is un-Constitutional. In this instances, there should be an actual Declaration of War.

If there is no justification for a Declaration, then per the Constitution and the treaty signed with the UN, it should be dealt with on an International level.

There is no debating this.

Why is Barbara Lee even being listened to?  The Senate isn't going along with her nonsense, nor is Obama.  She shouldn't have 10 minutes of anyone's time.  Let her revise and extend her remarks at 2:00am with the CSPAN crew and not waste any floor time.  Even Benghazi is subcommittee and doesn't take away floor time for real bills.

/Don't worry, in a few weeks all the farklibs will be pointing out the non-story of the VA complaining about the same old allegations of "people dying" and "people denied care" and "death panels."   Two weeks is about the attention span of farklibs so anything more than that is old and tired news.  It's the Jon Stewart news cycle.

2014-05-21 04:33:44 PM
That's okay.  They're already pushing for an AUMF over Benghazi.  More specifically, 'use of force against those responsible for the attack against United States personnel in Benghazi, Libya.'.  That's the laser-like focus and precise objectives we've come to love and respect from the GOP.  There's no way that could be misinterpreted or used for ulterior motives and wars is it?
