Subby has obviously not been to Thailand. We're not talking Somalia or even some South American country here. Generally speaking I find Thais to be extremely peaceful and well mannered people.

I will postpone judgment on the matter until I know whether or not Billy Joel can take it anymore...

"Selfies with Soldiers" sounds like a great band name.

Sounds about right, I was just a little kid at the time and I remember MTV would play it about once an hour...thought "Trouble in the Suez" was "trouble in the sewers", referring to the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles...

//feel hella old now...

This sort of thing is even less of an issue if you're a farang.  Just go on about your business and don't fall for the Black Buddha scam.

So they try a coup every 4.5 years.

I guess people get used to it.

Ah that's cute; a few years back when the tanks were in the streets the last time there were hookers climbing on them.

The armed forces have attempted 18 coups since the end of the absolute monarchy in 1932-an average of one every four and a half years.

lol

Yeah, as coups go this looks pretty tame.

The machine gun clearly isn't loaded.  I don't think the rifle is either, but I can't since it is a bullpup and his arm is partially blocking where the magazine would be.

Didn't they have a problem last time they did this?  I kind of remember a combination of tourists taking selfies and sending go-go girls out to shake it in front of troops.  It's got to be rough keeping your war face when the Thai Goldie Hawn is doing the froog.

People forget that they're still a monarchy. And not an English style one either, if the King gave the order the military would most likely withdraw.

It's not a coup (yet).  The government was dissolved back in December (it is a parliment, it was dissolved by the PM as a way to appease anti-government protesters), and so far no new government has been elected (due to some asshattery by the largest opposition party), and just recently most of the caretaker government was ordered out of office after they tried to change the constitution illegally.  The anti-government protests have been going on since late last year, and have been shot at with guns, grenades, and other ordinance.  And now the pro-government protesters have set up nearby, and at least some of their leaders have been promising more violence.

The police in Thailand are worthless, and have done nothing to protect the protesters (from either side).  The military has stepped in to stop the escalation of the protests.  They've shut down one propaganda TV stations from each side (who often have guests on encouraging violence), but left the others running.  They've put check points around both of the major protest sites (Both pro and anti-government) and are checking anyone entering for weapons, but are not stopping people from joining the protests.  They've also shut down the marches that would put each side within easy reach of the other.

Now this may well turn into a coup, but at the moment they seem to be working primarily as a peace keeping role and are trying to work with the civilian government to get their ass in gear and hold proper, legal elections.

Well if they close all the sidewalk bars, that would suck.

It looks to me like people know how to take things like this in stride and wait it out.
