Guitar rock is going to come blazing back the same way it always has -- based on the truth that girls swoon over dudes who play guitar. If I had a 13 year old son, I'd tell him to get out ahead of that curve so he can be King Biscuit when the pendulum swings back.

Pretty much this, i don't think that people who are really into dubstep went that way after being fans of guitar rock. Let's face it, any music that basically requires you to do drugs to be into it probably isn't that great to begin with.

I guess.  Its wild popularity always baffled me.  I wasn't keeping up with what was going on so it was quite a shock listening to BPM on a daily basis and suddenly hearing it (post-2008/2009 dubstep) blasted every other song.  It appears to be on the way out of the mainstream which is good.  It stole audience form guitar music but it totally rolled over decent vocal mixes (house, trance, etc...).

Yes.

You can always rely on Clutch. Always. Also, too, Neil Fallon has the best lines in all of music. Even when he's doing guest vocals for Mastodon.

listened to blood and thunder this morning

seriously though do people think guitar music ever actually died or do people only define the existence of music by what is on the radio

Yeah this. Can't stand Queens of the Stone age myself as I'm more of a hard rock fan and I can't stand the lead singer's voice, but guitar rock has been around a hell of a lot longer than dumbstep and will be around long after dumbstep has faded into obscurity and the next trend in electronic music has come and gone.

I find it annoying to listen to.

The only word I can use is annoying. And I'm a Queens fan. Seen them live 4 times.

Their sound is just way too complex. There's too much happening on every single track of that album. Sat by the Ocean is perhaps an exception, but the rest is just a jumbled mess.

I like Joshua Homme as a person (he hung out with Anthony Bourdain on an episode of NO
RESERVATIONS), but frankly their stuff has a certain signature sameness for me that just
doesn't light my fire.

That's not a slam:  I love U2 and the Doors, who also have a certain signature sound (especially
U2), and that doesn't necessarily mean they're a louzy band, but since they don't seem to deviate
much from their sound it might limit their appeal.

Kuta: Grunge is back. Meh.

I'm otherwise in the "Rock never went away" camp and I liked Grunge when it was out, but I think Rock's mainstream popularity wouldn't be in the dumps if its revivals could bring something new to the table. There's something really unexciting about the prospect of a formerly popular subgenre becoming popular again solely to piss off dubstep fans.

I kind of expect that blues-based guitar rock will mostly stay dead for a while, because it's old peoples' music. I'm an old person, and after 50 years of that stuff I'm still kinda tired of it even though it's been 'out' for a while.

On the other hand there's a certain kind of Electronic something-or-other that's really starting to grate on my nerves -- the kind with a really tinny brittle-sounding drum track at the forefront of the mix with lots of 64th and 128th notes that don't serve any apparent musical purpose other than to say 'look how fast I can make the drum machine go', and with the other tracks stuck in there as an afterthought. I think I'll blame Aphex Twin, since one of his tracks was the most recent thing to make me scream "THIS shiat'S farkING AWFUL" at the webcast I was listening to.

It took me no time at all to get tired of that shiat. Not sure when it started, but I know it's a cliche now. Even the local NPR station uses it all the time for background music.

I've always tried to not let an artist's personal life color my feelings for their music as much as I can, but learning that Kyuss split up basically because Homme was hoarding the songwriter credits has certainly dampened my enjoyment of QOTSA.  Well, that and Era Vulgaris.

Black Sabbath was what this is now. It's all just a take on that, they just needed a name to separate them from grunge as it was dying out in popularity.

Yet, the Alice In Chains zombie continues to tour and fill places of medium-large size. Soundgarden discovered all their old fans have jobs now and can afford to pay big bucks to watch them be almost good.

QOTSA can fill Red Rocks and play super farking tight. Mastodon is packing the Nokia center. It's not hopeless. Foo Fighters still work. It's somewhat difficult to see what's nostalgia-driven and what's new though.

I know it's kind of the worst of two worlds to most, but I listen to "Get Up" by Korn and Skrillex almost every day. I really haven't experienced any true Dub or whatever the fark you call it, but if that song is any indication, it definitely has potential.
