I've never had anything but Time Warner. Oddly, the service they provide where I live now is a lot better than what they provided in antoher part of the same city, where I lived before.

I've had Bombcast for many years - as an ISP & phone only - and haven't had many troubles with them but when I have had to call customer service I make sure I have several drinks ready.

When i moved from FL to GA I accidentally sent an online payment to the old FL account.  It was a damned nightmare to get that money back.  Not because they were stingy but because my GA account was linked to my FL phone number and my FL account was linked to my new Comcast home number.  I'd call, enter the old account number, and get routed to a GA call center where they couldn't help me with a FL account.  The drones in FL would transfer me to the generic inbound queue and I would just get routed back to FL.  It took me over a year to finally get a human supervisor on the line to clear it up.

I moved recently. Current place doesn't have cable (aside from internet, which leasing company includes in rent, and I have no idea who it's even through) and I'm finding that between Netflix, firstrow and a shared HBO GO basspword for GoT, I don't miss it.

Will see if that changes coem football season, but since there's a bar in my building's basement, I think I'm good.

I had Cablevision for many years.  The price kept going up.  Their service was spotty, the signal gave out from time to time.  There were glitches while just watching a regular show.  Their HD was inconsistent.  And here's the kicker - I like to sometimes watch TV on my tablet after everyone else has gone to bed.  They had an app for that.  It worked great on my phone.  My tablet, which is 3 years newer and running a newer version of Android was not supported.  Go figure.  A few months ago, they forced me to upgrade the app on my phone.  Now my phone isn't supported either.  Thanks a lot for that guys!

Now, being an Android developer myself, I know for a fact, there is no friggin excuse for that, other than being lazy.

So I went with FiOS.  They have better signal, better picture, and it's more consistent.  They have more HD.  And they have an app that works 100% on my phone AND my tablet, AND my kid's iPhones.
I also have faster internet speeds, and my bill is about $50 less per month.  And they gave me a $250 gift card.

Suck it Cablevision.

FIOS had just moved into the area and they were already starting to lose customers to them, but they still acted like they were the only game in town.

I had Dish Network a long time ago, but there are trees in my neighborhood, and after 4 visits from Dish Network technicians trying to figure out why my HD service would freeze up the entire signal reception so badly that it would not respond to attempts to change the channel, power off, etc., they finally told me I would have to cut down some 50-year-old trees for the signal to be received for HD reliably or I would have o put the dish on a pole that is higher than the highest of those trees.  I told them at that point that I had no intention of installing a 75' pole in my yard or cutting down several trees due to a fault in their product that does not allow for trees and service to simultaneously exist and I canceled Dish and switched to AT&T U-verse.  You could argue that snow and trees are both not their fault, but what they do is expose weaknesses in the service being provided by Dish.  That weakness doesn't exist for other options, so yes, you can buy a house that has no trees around and for making the decision to live near trees, you accept the consequences, but since Dish is not the only option available and they don't care to offer reasonable solutions to that weakness, they just aren't an acceptable option for some people.

AT&T has been an absolute nightmare with at least 6 tech visits in the last year, faulty equipment that AT&T refused to admit was faulty for a while, and billing errors.  Recently canceled TV service again after they tried to raise my bill $50 a month after promotions ended.  I hadn't had TV for 2 years before that and didn't mind it.  I don't have Netflix or Amazon prime and my experience with Hulu hasn't been great either.  Where I live, an antenna isn't an option as I'm in a valley.  I'm fine without live TV.  I'll take it if they make it cheap enough to be worth the problems for the limited amount I watch it, but for even $50 a month over the course of a year, you can buy a lot of DVDs and Blu-Rays for $600 a year.  I own several full TV series and hundreds of movies, and the longer periods of time I go without paying $50 a month for cable, the bigger my collection gets, making the likelihood of my ever paying that again less and less likely.

AT&T, meanwhile, recently sent me an offer to add TV back where I'd be paying $7 more a month for the next year than I was previously, but with them giving me a $250 Visa gift card.  They weren't willing to work with me before I dropped them, but now they're willing to reinstall everything for the TV, eat the shipping of the equipment I just returned to them on their dime, and give me $250 if I pay $7 a month more than I was paying before I dropped them a couple weeks ago.  The math just doesn't seem right to me, and now that I've dropped them again and am not missing it, even that doesn't really mean much to me yet.  Either they have no concept of making good business decisions, didn't think I'd leave again, or are planning some unpleasant itemizing costs that I wouldn't agree to.  The last time they asked me to complete a survey, I gave them something like a 60% satisfaction rating and the only positive comment I had for them was that at least they aren't Comcast, whom I've had before and never want to deal with again.

Dish shouldn't have installed in the first place, but the technician might have been under pressure and didn't want to get hit with a NLOS visit (no line-of-sight). Going through the trees is a major issue with satellite. You MUST HAVE PERFECT line-of-sight or there will be a terrible signal if any. You wouldn't have needed a 75' pole, installing on the roof would probably have been okay. I've seen some dishes on a tripod on a roof to see over trees. Of course, after some years, the trees keep growing and the tripod doesn't.

One of the first things I'm doing when I move next months is putting up a dish to get the national PBS feeds. With patience and line-of-sight you can get a god amount of stuff for free. Just have to worry about those trees. And snow on the dish.

TWC does allow you stream everything real-time to your iPad, which I thought was pretty cool.

I really do find it amazing how expensive all pay services, especially cable, can be.  And what's really frustrating is when your bill goes up, they have no explanation other than that it costs them more to maintain the service.  Really?  Why?

So then you call to cancel your service because you just switched to a different service, they tell you, "We can match that price!".   Oh, really?!  Why the hell didn't you match that price months ago?  Why are you only willing to do it now because I'm switching?  I thought it was getting more expensive for you to maintain the service.  You can't possibly afford to CUT my rate!  That's unpossible!!

This is why (and I wonder how common this is), people around here will switch services to get the deal.  Keep it for 2 years.  Then, right before they jack the price up, they take the NEW deal from the competitor and switch back.  I know people that have done this many, many times, over the years.

As a fellow Comcast prisoner, I can relate to your dilemma. Last year they took away my fave geek / gamer channel, the G4 network (sigh) and now going away in the first week of June is the Nick 2 channel on the 100's digital tier block. (Being replaced by the regular Nickelodeon, which we already have on a lower channel block.....so two copies of the same channel?) I'm not the one who is sad about that one, though.....My 5 year old niece is! How am I supposed to explain to her that one of her favorite cartoon channels will go bye bye?

/ I can't understand the lineup changes these past few years.....Comcast going crazy

Reminds me of when the Soap channel disappeared.  (My wife watched it.  Shut up.)  I initally blamed the cable company.  Then I found out that Disney, the actual owner, simply killed the channel.
Not much you can do when that happens.

Lots of folks are voting with their dollars and cancelling ("cutting the cord", as the kids like to call it). It's definitely an adjustment if you grew up with cable, but not paying $100/month is very refreshing. Lots of people still don't realize you can put up an antenna (or use the old metal monster that you never took down off your roof) and get free television in HD (especially if you're in a big city - I get 100+ channels in Socal, 30+ of which I actually watch/enjoy/understand the language of). I still have to deal with TWC for my internet, but other than them raising the price here and there, the service is fine.

The key to being happy is taking a zen-like approach and stop caring about specific shows. You're not going to get them all, and that's okay.

The installer should have been able to tell you when installing the dish if it would work. They have a little scope that lets them measure the azimuth. I live on a wooded lot and had the same concerns. They checked and it's been good.

They suck for not being able to tell you that the trees were in the way. Not that satilite tech can't see through foligage.

Uhh, I'm not sure that is right.....

The G4 channel was all about gadgets, computers, and video gaming. That one went away in the first few months of 2013.

The GQ channel is about fashion and the upscale lifestyle for men, I think. I don't watch it, but based on the magazine.....I assume it will be similar. Not 100% sure about it, though.

/ my new fave network is El Ray by Robert Rodriguez. Old Shaolin style karate flicks, sci-fi movies, action/horror grind house movie Fridays, and the X Files & Dark Angel series.....just awesome!

I am surprised there is someone worse than Comcast.
I switched to DirecTV and have been complaint-free and saving money for about 4 years now.   Maybe 3 or 4 times per year I do lose my signal in horrible weather and catch up on my DVR.

I haven't had a problem with them at all in the last six months. The thing I'm most happy about though is that merely because they exist I didn't have to go through Comcast.

1.move all the channels with any entertainment value whatsoever to the highest tiers,
2. replace them with ShopNBC, QVC, HSN, ShopHQ, and other sales and auction channels, or in the case of my provider fill the lowest tiers with Mexican broadcast channels and infomercial networks.
3. profit

This is a worthwhile trick. A previous employer had "customer care advocates", and they really did help. Talking to the retention department can usually get your rates pro-rated, and would really highlight issues that merely checking out Remedy tickets and SMNP traps wouldn't show. They were also helpful when us mere techs needed to pushback against some dumbass VPs "brilliant" idea of the week.

I will say the only major issue I had with dish network was 7 years ago when they were offering a free DVR to new customers.

I had fufilled my contract and was a customer at will and called and asked for the free DVR. The customer rep refused. I explained that Direct TV had the same offer, but would rather stay with Dish and was more than willing to enter into another 2 year contract. Nope.

Obvioulsy I had a customer service rep in a forighn country who was not allowed to deviate from her script.

I wrote an email to the VP at Echostar asking for him to explain to me why I was not qualified for the offer, and that I would probably switch to Direct TV.

The next day I got a phone call from a dish district manager saying he didn't know who I spoke to, but he has never seen a service request get fast tracked like that before and wanted to know when he could come by an install my DVR system.

That's another thing I've noticed, they give you several repeat channels and count that as the line up. Oh wow. I can watch the same show on channel 1152 or 345? I love options! thanks Comcast!

Dish was also horrible about that with their top 50,100,150 line up. You're telling me that 6 golf channels are in the top 50 most popular channels, but History is only in the top 100 and SciFi is not until the top 150? Fark you, Dish.

No matter how much of a wall you write you can't change the laws of physics. Even your mobile phone works better in the winter when the trees don't have leaves.

Cut the cord in favor of Roku and Smart TV browsing (Netflix, Hulu, etc.) and OTA digital.  Saving about $80/month.  About the only thing I miss is live versions of The Daily Show and Colbert Report.

(And I don't miss them that much.)

I have NOTHING good to say about them. I had their service for 3 days in January. I STILL Regularly have to call them to get bills to stop, or to get my DirecTV turned back on because I tried to bundle, and they still won't release my account.

We decided to try service back in January. Something about the description made me ask if it was a DSL line, I got repeatedly told no. "It's fiber!".
So my DSL service gets hooked up and the first issue comes up. The house is a rental, and the phone lines are jacked. I finally found one phone jack that worked out in the garage. 3 or 4 days later, I've done multiple tests, the speed is actually slightly slower, and I'm going to have to either talk my landlords into calling out an electrician, doing it my self, or leaving my modem out in the dirty garage.

I call Centrury Link, they seem really helpful, I send everything back, and go on about my business.

IN April, my TV gets shut off, I call DirecTv, they tell me to call Century Link. I call them, and spend an hour explaining that I haven't had CL service since January, I had originally had my DTV bundled, but that was supposed to get released back to DTV back in January. Finally, I convince them that I am no longer a customer and get(another) confirmation code and find out that they don't have anyone in billing past 6 pm.

I find a CenturyLink office on Saturday, go in and find out that they can't do a farking thing because there aren't any people in billing after 6 pm or on weekends.

Monday, I FINALLY get someone and have to go through the whole farking spiel again, especially becaus ethey are NOW having trouble finding my goddam account.

3 weeks later(About a week a and a half ago), my TV goes off AGAIN. Same thing, DTV can't help me, I have to go through CL. Now, I get to find someone who can't find my account, can't find my account, finally finds my account and insists that ti is a business account, calls a supervisor over who "confirms" this and they send me off to the land of 'Business customers', despite my repeated insistence that I am a farking residential customer. I get to play the same farking game with the business accounts people, except that they can't even find the supposed business account. Eventually, they basically tell me tough shiat and the call is over. I call BACK and finally get someone who has at least a semblance of a brain. It turns out that when you have just DTV service through them, they change your account number by one digit. A number becomes something like a 'B' or a 'W'. The best part? They DON'T change it on the farking bill.

Now why the initial dumb broad I called didn't know this, why her supervisor didn't know it, and why the farking prick at business accounts didn't have a clue either, is something that I will never know.

OK, so I paid the bill and got my TV turned on(Again), so I'm done with CL, right?

No, because they bill forward. meaning that they generate the bill at the beginning of the month, so I am constantly owing them more money because they've already paid my bill "for" me.

So fark Century Link. Hopefully Thursday isn't so close to the end of the month that they will have already generated my next bill, or I will go stabby on a whole farking CL office... Otherwise THEN I'll pay it, and I will never do a single bit of business with those farksticks and their insistence on running a utility like it's a farking mud pie booth in their parents' back yard.

There's this one firm called Grande Communications that serves apartment complexes. A sure sign that you shouldn't move there.

Verizon FiOS is my heroin. It works. It's not cheap, but it works.

I'm about to just cancel cable service and go internet only. I've been talking with my wife about it since she watches television more than I do but the kid and I almost never watches TV, it's all Netflix on the iPad. I went to see what was on last night and it was farking abysmal, nothing but shows about pawn shops, car repossession, and QVC. For half the cost of cable I could sub to just about every streaming site I'm interested in: Netflix for me, Hulu for the wife, Crunchyroll for the kid.

I think I'll tell them I'll come back when I can pay for channels individually rather than paying for tiers of crap I will never watch.

I've had TWC, Charter, Dish, and DirecTV.  Honestly, they've all been pretty decent.  I would say that the customer service people at Direct were probably the easiest to deal with while Dish was probably the worst.  Charter and TWC have been pretty good internet wise.  Verizon (DSL, years ago) was probably the worst.  Charter has had a couple of hiccups with wrong work orders here and there, but they solve the issues quickly, so no real complaints.

I think the biggest problem for both Verizon (at least back in the day) and Dish was the offshore call center. A few years back, Dish used to have a separate channels for the HD feeds of the regional sports networks. So basically, your regional sports network would be on Channel 137 in SD all day.  During game time, you could tune to channel 837 to watch the game in HD.  Channel 837 would only be "on" during live games.  It was really no big deal, but at least 3 or 4 times a week the HD feed for the Dodgers games wouldn't come on until the middle of the game.  Since I was paying $10 a month for HD, I figured I'd call one day to see what the heck was up.  Got Indian tech dude, he didn't understand my issue. Had me restart receiver, etc (I didn't, but I played along).  My contract was up and I was looking to go to Direct anyhow (they were running that free Sunday Ticket deal at the time).  A couple of days after canceling (and DTV was already installed), retention guy called me, I told him the story.  He was like "Oh yeah, that's a bandwidth issue during the baseball season."

The first time I had Dish, the customer service was fantastic.  If you called with any issues, things were solved and all of the customer service folks were friendly and helpful.

I'm moving at the end of the month and will have to leave that behind.  It's really too bad because I have nothing but good things to say about them.

I have NOTHING good to say about them. I had their service for 3 days in January. I STILL Regularly have to call them to get bills to stop, or to get my DirecTV turned back on because I tried to bundle, and they still won't release my account.

I haven't tried TV through them. I just pay them 40 bucks a month for decent internet and I'm fairly happy with that.
