FTA :

Thailand's armed has staged 18 coups or attempted coups since the 1930s.

In my opinion, that's a lot.

Military-run television published a declaration saying "this is not a coup."

Really? Does that actually work? I mean if you were pulling a coup and didn't want the public to react wouldn't saying that be a good idea?
Amazed at how trusting people can be at times like this.

Yeah, who would ever use TV as a media to spread propaganda?

Actually, I'd argue that it is a lot worse than people think. Thailand can't exist as an on-going country in this fashion. Elections solve nothing because neither side accepts defeat and whichever side nominally loses immediately states to stage protests and disrupt public order. Meanwhile the military doesn't want to run the country--well it does but it needs the veneer of democracy--so they fart around while in power. The king is going to die and his son is a nihilistic playboy. So where does that leave Thailand? Phuked.

Pretty much this.  I'd only add that the same party keeps winning the elections but the elite "Democratic Party" keeps getting the judiciary to overthrow the legitimate results.  The same "democrats" want to get rid of the popular vote because their national candidates keep losing.

If anyone really cares, you have the red shirts and yellow shirts.  The red is popular in rural areas and yellow is the more or less 'elite'.  The king and royal family still run the place and will hedge their bets between the two.

I would go to Thai Pasta on SW4th right by PSU. So delcious! The pineapple red curry is the single greatest Thai dish in PDX. I worked from home over there and ate it at least 3x a week. Portland food carts are epic value for the $$$.

I can't help but think of all the old Americans who retired to Thailand because their social security goes so much further and the locals are law abiding and respectful of elders.

How are they fairing now?

Doesn't Thailand have a communist, anti-royal "party" that dabbles in terrorism?  Or am I thinking of another country?  (or did that group just cease to be relevant for that matter?)
