this was far from an isolated incident. In another match, after an opponent asked if she was menstruating and opined that "girls" played videogames only for attention, he left Haniver a voicemail that said, "I'm gonna impregnate you with triplets and then make you have a very late-term abortion." For three and a half years, Haniver has kept track of the invective heaped on her in multiplayer games, posting some 200 incidents on her blog so far.

Huh...

Free speech is a protection granted to you in your dissent with the government. Try telling a female colleague you are going to rape her sometime or tell the parking garage attendant you will shoot him and see how many farks the ACLU gives. Why should we lower our standards online?

Fark can be mysoginistic, sexist, and homophobic, but I recall examples of us defending our women, gays, and other assorted weirdos. "Hey, he can't do that to our Farkers." "Yeah, only we can do that to our Farkers." I have also seen us celebrate and rally around folks who had a bad time, especially people who lose a pet or a loved one, or when a Farker is suffering.

That article lost all credibility by bringing up League of Legends.  That place is still a cesspool.  Gaming communities in general have declined over the years, and while the shock-commentary has begun to subside as 4channers and Redditors realize that they're actually not very original or shocking, there is still rampant attempts at harassment, abuse, etc.

It's similar to a prison system.  You don't know the individuals past.  You're stuck in a community together.  Folks will seek out a pecking order, either through diplomacy or brutality.  The developers/publishers and their community teams are the prison wardens and guards, everyone else is an inmate trying to survive their stay.

A little more civility on the internet would go a long way. The key is fairly enforced policies and Moderators that give a fark.

What gets me is when I'm in a somewhat moderated forum, and another user, apropos of nothing, targets my post for some pseudo-intellectual but civilized debate, and upon receiving a polite response, descends suddenly into bizarro, scatter-shot, name-calling, uber-abusive madness. And I respond with, "That was quite over the top and uncalled for." and their reply is, "HURR Wat do U expect from da internet! LULz We're good right!? Now lets continue discussing ideas!" Um, no. I've found that the whole, "Doing it for the lulz" fallback is a sign of weakness rather than originality or humor.  More often than not, I've seen it deployed when folks get in over their head and find themselves incapable of debating their way out of a wet paper bag.  That and the overuse of the term 'trolling'.

Some weirdness I've noted is a strong difference in idiocy between factions on the same server of a given game, usually with the faction perceived as "good" having the most offensive and idiotic general chat (along with the least helpful players).

In WoW, alliance chat was almost always far worse than Horde. Any request for assistance was typically met with "solo it, n00b" or "l2p" on the Alliance side, while the players on Horde side would either give advice or would actually come and help.

On the old EQ2 faction PvP server, Freeport chat was for the most part quiet, with occasional group requests or biatching about how laggy Nektulos Forest is today. Qeynos chat was a plethora of screaming idiots who couldn't solo their way out of a paper bag (and I got stuck with them because my guild was Qeynos-side).

On SWtOR, both sides never stop making idiotic Jawa jokes, but logging from an Imperial to a Republic character is like switching from Fark to 4chan. You go from moronic jokes and "dumbass" being the worst curse word, to moronic jokes and "you farking retard asshole" in the blink of an eye.

And I REALLY don't get it in SWtOR... there's no restriction on which side you play. Everyone I know in the game has characters on both sides on the same server. Based on that, you would expect the chat to be similar on each side... but it's not even close.

FTA "In a 2013 Pew Research survey, 23 percent of people ages 18 to 29 reported being stalked or harassed online; advocacy groups report that around 70 percent of the cases they deal with involve female victims, and one study of online gaming found players with female voices received three times as many negative responses as men. "

All that tells me is that males are far less likely to take such comments seriously and report them. I've played plenty of online games and the shiat talking from males to other males is just as intense as it is towards females. We just tend to brush it off more easily and don't want to go through the hassle of reporting. I'm sure many of you have heard the phrase "Men bond by insulting each other, but they don't really mean it. Women bond by complimenting each other, and they don't really mean it either". Well ignoring the second half, I'd say that's pretty pertinent. A group of males in pretty much any situation will socialize a great deal through insults and shiat talking. When females join that group as an equal player, they can pretty much expect the same. It's been that way a hell of a lot longer than the internet and online gaming have been around.

I must be an odd one then because I generally consider these folk in the "people I never want to talk to" group. I'm not sure where this "being an asshole is a good thing" idea got perpetuated, but I'll be damned if that's the sort of world I want to live in.

I have never understood why so many guys get so butthurt when a girl does something to get attention. When girls want attention they do stuff like take their clothes off. And millions of guys scream "ATTENTION WHORE!" at them, which has to have the effect of reducing the incidence of clothing removal. Seems kind of counterproductive to me.

I bet she talked a lot of shait. If you're not on the mic people won't try and talk to you. Which leads me to: some of what's wrong with online bullying is that kids are putting themselves in a place to be bullied when they could withdraw from that social media sector and be fine (tumbler is a great example). But with xbox live if harassment comes when you talk on the mic, just don't talk on the mic. And consider a gamertag that isn't something like barbie69boobs or cutiepiegurlgamer
