1. Most college students want to get married.
A survey done by BYU found that 97 percent of its female students wanted to eventually walk down the aisle, while 93 percent of men also had those intentions

Seems legit.

It's all relative.  If you were getting none before college, and get married and are getting it from only one source after college, than anything more than that would qualify as the sowing-your-oats period.

But that still doesn't mean that you're getting a lot from a lot of different sources.

2014-05-19 03:23:22 PM
I've heard that (it depends on major) that anywhere from 40-50% of engineering students are virgins.

So yes, most of campus isn't getting any.  Because there's no time because of all the classwork, there's no girls, and even if there were girls, see no time.

2014-05-19 03:31:38 PM

Sybarite: eventually

there's the key word.  for women and men, eventually are pretty far apart.

I don't know about the preferences of college kids, but as an Old Man I'm finding that the "hookup culture" is alive and well.  Finding sex partners is surprisingly easy, it's finding someone to be more than that which is presenting a difficulty.

Well there went my thunder.

I'll be on my way.

the majority of people who I met said they were in a relationship (mostly long-distance with someone from their hometown).

They usually breakup at Thanksgiving.

So they pick BYU to do a study about hooking up? Next up, a study on sobriety at Wisconsin.

Turns out, millennials prefer monogamy.

Women prefer monogamy.  Men want cheap meaningless sex, if they can get away with it.

Interest in monogamy later in life doesn't preclude casual sex in the near future.

A group of my friends in college were pretty goddamn shameless about casual sex. You'd notice two people at the party were missing, and they'd emerge disheveled  from behind a closed door like an 80s teen comedy. It was pretty cheesy. The fact that they call this "hookup culture" now doesn't mean it's any worse than it was in my day. Also they all gave each other the clap.

I had a similar experience.  Divorced at 36, and had a FANTASTIC last few years having fun.  Finally met a woman that I'm going to stick with, but there was no difficulty with "hookups" during the single phase...

2014-05-19 04:42:48 PM
Hookup culture is definitely a thing, or at least it was in the early 2000's. I'm assuming it's only gotten more prevalent by 2014.

Either hookup culture is a myth or erectile dysfunction is a lie, there are too many contradictory articles on Fark today.

It depends on how attractive you are (duh!), who you know and what you do.  It exists, but not as the level as say pop culture says it is.

I've never cared to even think of or identify a "hookup culture" w/in any subset of people or throughout greater society. People have sex, and some more than others. That's it.

I mean really, that's it. There's no need to draw lines everywhere and pull definitions out of someone's arse. People fark with varying degrees of frequency and intimacy.

For most men "monogamy" just means "not a threesome"...

Holy fark. That's how far I made it through TFA and I feel like I suffered the brain damage of a dozen concussions.

The other spark of genius was "young people (mostly millennials)"...yes, you need to specify you're not talking about all the young baby boomers.

Seriously, I read that and just stopped there. My own survey indicates the same 97% want to get their freak on without upsetting God.

"Hookup culture" is just a derogatory term for young people who like to have casual sex. It's an age-old affliction on about 15-20% of the population which affects, as it always has, males and females disproportionately.

The data have shown over and over than there are many more guys who'll sleep with anyone than girls who will. The reality is that the girls who don't mind sleeping around really get around while the guys who aren't so discriminating spend a lot more time waiting their turn.

Yeah, I wish I knew that in college.  Self-confidence is also HUGE, because I had far better luck with women once my confidence rose from near-zero levels.

As an engineer, it was only upon reflection that I realized how lucky I was to live in the same dorm that housed the Women In Science and Engineering program.

No no no no no.

You DON'T get to cite BYU and The Christian Science Monitor as your pulse of "what millennials today are actually doing".  Nor can you quote a research study that shows a decline in monogamy and gloss it off as "basically the same amount".

It's all about top shelf pussy. There's people that get it. And there's people that don't get it. But it is out there. I've seen it from a distance. Like a Fata Morgana but with fake boobs.

I went to a large state school with a college of engineering. Maybe the engineers didn't have as much sex as they wanted, but most found the time to have *some*.

umm, a 1988-1996 study on sexual patterns does not reflect millennials. That would be generation X.

You fail at research analysis author.

I can't speak for you other Farkers, but going to parties in college was all about getting laid...and drunk.

The older most get, the easier it is for them to get laid. My early 30s was full of good times.

I don't need to "hook up" with random chicks.
