FTFA:...local small business owner "Link", at Brighton Donuts on West Grand River, said he's not worried about he his employees keeping the conversation clean.  "No, I never get mad," he said, adding that he has bigger concerns when it comes to city government. "Pete said I'm the owner; I said owner my ***! If I don't pay my taxes on time, they'll take the mother ******."

The whole story is the people being cited are teenagers...and particularly, skateboarders. In the interest of public safety these dangerous vermin must not be allowed anywhere near where the good, law-abiding townspeople go. Children, think, etc.

Brighton long has had a reputation for crypto-fascist police statism. Because it has the state highway patrol office there at the intersection of US-23 and I-96. Before the M-14 connector was built, all Detroit and suburban college students at U of M and MSU had to pass by there, MSU straight on 96 and UM taking 96 west and 23 south. Always slowing to exactly 55 mph on the interstate anywhere near Brighton when that was the limit. Just like in OHIO.

In all seriousness, if you're an adult and profanity offends you to the point that you need to make a law about it, you really need to rethink your priorities. Puritanitical bullshiat at its finest.

Of course the converse is true. If you are an adult and they only way you have to express yourself is constant swearing, you are no different than a child jumping up and down and screaming all the time.

No one cares as long as you only apply it to young people. It also helps to identify them with some sort of activity that is most popular with young people and can be made to sound subversive. And of course anytime young people aggregate you can make reference to drug use, though it's best to avoid direct accusations.

Not even vaguely the same. The law is against swearing in public, period. Say what someone else considers a bad word and you get the weight of the Law brought down on you. This isn't about only being able to express yourself by constant swearing. It's a blanket prohibition on your choice of words in public speech.

Next time you see a law requiring constant swearing let me know. Until then there is no "converse" to consider.

Oh, witness yon internet outrage.

Pretty funny considering that y'all -choose- to be on a website that masks common swear words.

BumpInTheNight has it right - base profanity is boring and lacks pizzazz.

/Shakespeare knew a thing or two about creative insults:

"You scullion! You rampallian! You fustilarian!

''Thou art a general offence and every man should beat thee."

"Thou art as loathsome as a toad."

"Go, prick thy face, and over-red thy fear, Thou lily-liver'd boy."

"Thou clay-brained whoreson obscene greasy tallow-catch!"

''Swollen parcel of dropsies, stuffed cloak-bag of guts''

''you bull's-pizzle''

"Thou poisonous bunch-back'd toad!"

"Thou art unfit for any place but hell."

"Thine face is not worth sunburning."

"You are as a candle, the better burnt out."

"Thy sin's not accidental, but a trade."

"Thou cream faced loon"

///those that think words cannot be regulated in the U.S. should try shouting 'fire' in a movie theater.
And yes I know you disagree re: ladies laws, and keeping kids ears pure - but some of us still care.

2014-05-19 04:02:29 PM
I'm not at all offended by profanity, sometimes there are no other words to describe how you feel. But when every other word out of somebodys mouth is a swear then it really takes away the impact of teh word and makes the person sound like an idiot.

Good point. Implementing a fine for conveying the intent or thinking of swearing at someone would be much better.

Is it just the words?  Can I still talk about my proclivity for rectal fornication with your mother, that sexually immoral coprophage? Can I say "I pried your sister's diseased snatch-flaps open with the jaws of life and shoved three retarded midgets into her filthy clunge because that's the only thing that gets her off" and still be within the law?

Ban your words. I can be just as crude without them, you dog-raping maggots.

Calling someone an "asshole" expresses a feeling and sentiment that can't be described any better by an alternate less efficient phrase.

Using FARK as our standard, you may or may not have noticed that FARK does not filter "asshole" as an obscenity.
