IvyLady: CanisNoir: IvyLady: CanisNoir: IvyLady: In all seriousness, my gut tells me that the majority of people in the US who have inherited fortunes in the 9 and 10 digit range are probably otherwise decent people who are just completely clueless as to how big the chasm is between them and everyone else - even the comfortably middle class.

Most of them probably have enough good sense to quietly enjoy their lives without running around paranoid that someone somewhere might try to take something from them.  A lot of them probably recognize that if the government raised their taxes by 10% the massive gulf of wealth between them and everyone else would shrink the tiniest bit and the whole think would have no effect whatsoever on their lives.

Do you think that the gap would decrease because that extra 10% would make you richer? You're wrong. The gulf would marginally decrease because you would be making them poorer. That's not a good solution.

This is my point.  I wasn't advocating anything, let alone a 10% tax increase.  I merely pointed out that even a (gasp!) whopping (gasp!) 10% tax increase doesn't appreciably affect lifestyle or the accumulation of wealth for these folks and I'm sure that most of them understand that.

So take a breath and calm down.  No one was advocating a tax increase on people you have never and will never know that will have no effect whatsoever on their lives.

I'm not paniced; my point was that people claiming that the rich need to pay more taxes to decrease wealth disparity is really just about punishing success because that wont make poor people richer, just rich people poorer. We need a real solution, not class warfare.

This is fascinating.  Again, I wasn't actually "advocating that the rich need to pay more taxes to decrease wealth disparity."  First, my syntax isn't that bad.  Second, (and for the third time), I never advocated any tax increase.  I used a tax increase as an illustrative example of a different concept altogether.

Sorry, I misunderstood what you meant when you said that they would recognise a raise in their taxes would decrease a tiny bit the wealth disparity. So if you didn't intend a coralation between taxes and wealth disparity, please explain what you did mean? I am over tired so might be way off

I think you're completely missing the point.

There are several ways to make money.  Most people derive the majority of their income from their paycheck (what they used to call "earned income").  If you are the CEO of a huge company, you draw a paycheck and you are taxed at the appropriate tax rate for your salary.  I have very little problem with that.   We should remove the cap on payroll tax deductions, but that's about it.

But for the super-rich, they get the majority of their income from investments.  The tax rate on unearned income (capital gains etc.) is lower.  If you have money, you can use that money to make even more money, and pay a lower tax rate.  If you lose money, you can use your losses as a tax shield.  If you make certain kinds of income, you can magically turn your paychecks into carried interest.... and get them taxed at a lower rate!

What we should do:

tax unearned income at the same marginal tax rate as earned income.
Get rid of the carried interest loophole  (by doing point one.  no loophole if the rate is the same)
Raise the inheritance tax after a reasonable ($5 Million) deduction.
Institute a financial transaction tax to make high-frequency trading less attractive

The old saying is "necessity is the mother of invention" not "free capital sloshing around searching for a better rate of return is the mother of invention"  We drive that necessity by building up the base of the economic pyramid, not making the peak more exaggerated.

Because at least the President killed Bin Laden...which is kind of like making the trains run on time.  Sort of.  Oh screw it...here's the real comparison:

...you just compared him to a dead teenage king. Ouch.

Also, another dead leader (Benazhir Bhutto) would like a word on the bin Laden matter...

/not sure who's telling the truth on that one, but it wouldn't surprise me to learn it's not our government.

Hmm...I'll stick with comparing him to Joffery in the first two books.  If I remember right, he doesn't get assassinated by Varys until book 3...which we don't find out until he kills Kevan Lannister so Cersi can fark things up so badly they'll welcome Aegon Targaryn with open arms to King's Landing.  Thats assuming that Jon isn't a bastard Targaryn and Danny doesn't beat him to it.  It should be good when Cat shows up from the dead as Stoneheart and starts killing Lannisters like they're going out of style.  I think they're waiting for the season finale for that one.  We should see Aegon in a couple of episodes, depending on how they play Tyrion's voyage to the east.  I hope Martin gets off his arse and gets winds of winter out sometime in the near future.  As for the truth, we got Bin Laden.  I would have gone a bit farther and hung his body from the Liberty Tree in Boston...or we could have given it the Deadwood treatment and let it be eaten by pigs.

WASHINGTON - Newly released federal financial disclosure forms show that President Barack Obama and first lady Michelle Obama held assets last year worth between $1.8 million and $6.8 million.
Required by law, the disclosure forms allow public officials to list their assets in broad ranges, such as between $1 million and $5 million. That makes it difficult to determine a precise net worth.
The forms show the Obamas owe between $500,000 and $1 million on a 30-year mortgage on their Chicago home.
The president also collected between $250,000 and $2.1 million in royalties on his three best-sellers: "Dreams From My Father," "The Audacity of Hope" and a children's book, "Of Thee I Sing: A Letter to My Daughters."
The White House released the documents Wednesday. Obama signed them Tuesda

Pocket Ninja: A lot of people like to dismiss these Obama/Hitler comparisons, but that's only because so many people just do a simple comparison, find no links, and dismiss it outright. They're not looking deep enough, in other words. Even those who attempt to use advanced numerological tools are often frustrated in their efforts. They see no easy link, and as a result cross their arms and say, "this is a stupid comparison." They point out, correctly, that the name Barack Obama has a numerological weight of 5 (individual weights 18 and 14, or 1+8 (9) and 1+4 (5) yielding 14, or 1+4=5), and Adolf Hitler has a value of 11, one of the Master Numbers (20 and 36, 2+0 (2) and 3+6 (9) yielding 11). And while Hitler having a Master Number makes sense, certainly, how does Mr. Obama's 5 relate to that?

Ah, but you are forgetting something. You are forgetting Barack Obama's middle name. Hussein. Value, 32. 3+2=5. Added to the 5 previous, we have 10, for a final value (1+0) of 1. Barack Hussein Obama has a value of 1.

1. And Hitler is 11. Half the value.

So, interesting. But is there meaning here?

No. Not really. And here is exactly where most drop the story.

But they drop too soon. They drop without considering that Obama has a second last name, a family name he has attempted to keep in the dark for a very long time. That name is Soetoro. Soetoro has a value of 35, or 3+5, or 8. Now, replace Obama with Soetoro in the president's total name value, and what you get is Barack (9) Hussein (5) Soetoro (8). That's a total of 22.

22. Another power number, the one related to the Master Builder. And, a number with twice the value of Hitler's 11, which was itself a doubling of Barack Obama's public persona value, one. 1, 11, 22.

Do you see a pattern emerging?

Is this conclusive? No. But it is a beginning. It is a beginning of a pattern, a pattern that, if true, could signify something terrible indeed. We must find these patterns, shed the light of truth on them, before all is lost.
