The funny thing about it is I've seen employees using segways at Epcot.

I've even heard they're doing a thing where you can ride a segway through World Showcase for $80.. Farking double standards..

2004-02-09 11:57:56 AM
Are you angered as well at the prohibition of "outside food" at movie theatres?

2004-02-09 12:03:07 PM
oh man, it's a farking scooter. if you own one...you're stupid. plain and simple.

2004-02-09 12:03:59 PM
"Disney World doesn't allow the Segways into the parks because they haven't been approved by the Food and Drug Administration as medical devices"

If someone wipes out on the Small World ride, on their
unapproved Segway. Disney will get sued thus causing the price of admission to go up even higher than it already is.

I'm not familiar with the pros/cons of the segway. Why is it stupid to own one?

2004-02-09 12:12:13 PM
because someguy50 said so. duh.

2004-02-09 12:22:12 PM
I am happy they built the Segway just so we all got to see pictures of Dubya busting his ass on one.

2004-02-09 12:26:44 PM
clearly if you hear something in a FARK forum it's gospel.

seriously though, the thing is like 5 grand, looks stupid, and i will kick your ass if i see you on one.

This guy's page is kinda funny.

On my way home from Best Buy last night, my friend and I had to wait for a lady to cross the street on one her segway. It was funny to see all the other people around us looking and pointing. However, I couldn't tell if she had problems walking like normal people, or just really lazy. Probably the latter, knowing my area. But for people who can't walk because of Arthritis or similar diseases, this should be treated like a wheelchair. I want to bash too, but my inner adult won't let me.

2004-02-09 12:30:47 PM
Well, reading the article it's not some lazy guy who wants to be cool riding around on his segway, it's a paraplegic who'd rather be standing than sitting in a wheelchair.

2004-02-09 12:35:02 PM
But he tired of sitting and the scooter cost him $200.

So he had a problem dropping 2 bills on a scooter for a day, but no problem paying 5 G's for a stand-up scooter? Someone needs to tell these handicapped people that saying things like sitting down is "an insult" is incredibly stupid sounding.

sec
2004-02-09 12:35:40 PM
If God wanted me to walk everywhere, he would have made everywhere I wanted to go closer together. Like a one block radius.

Everything is too expensive when it first comes out. DVD burners were $17,000 in 1998. Give it time.

I agree people should just walk if they're able, but if you're on crutches and don't like taking the bus, or if you are old and can't move that well, I can see it being preferrable to other means.

Seriously though, if you want to kick someone's ass for looking stupid, you might want to try some yoga or something.

As stupid sounding as this post? Not even close.

Disney is the cute, lovable, nieghborhood girl next door who is in fact a rancid, syphalistic, scanky, disease-riden whore. Steven Jobs nailed it with his Pixar parting comments. They embody everything that is evil about the creative industry - they're all industry and no creative. They are a marketing warehouse reeking of shallow plagerism and prostitution.

I have no opinion on the Segways.

2004-02-09 12:38:58 PM
iollow, he tried but he ended up just kicking the yoga instructor's ass

2004-02-09 12:40:06 PM
If the scooters aren't approved by the FDA, then I could see why Disney would be cautious about them. But I'll bet they'll change the policy if the FDA endorses them.

the segway rider = jerk meme is already out there. the jerk character on Arrested Development rides one

2004-02-09 12:42:36 PM
Don't worry the price of one will go down as soon as they offshore all of the jobs that are associated with making one ..............

2004-02-09 12:43:26 PM
I blame Bush.

tom tuttle -
do you have that girl's phone number, and if so, will you please post it here?

2004-02-09 12:45:38 PM
My only opinion was that unless the segway was used for some sort of industrial/business application to increase productivity or something like that, it is just a novelty for people with too much disposable income. Its only a novelty because it can stand up by itself. (As long as the batteries dont go dead.)

2004-02-09 12:46:46 PM
What about a pony, instead?

2004-02-09 12:48:33 PM

I know a guy that has one. It's great for the city. I got to try it out, they are fun as hell! It's really easy to control and ride. It's a fun toy.

But the pricetag is a bit steep, I payed less for my bike.

If they come down in price I'd pick one up.

2004-02-09 12:48:40 PM
I like the part where she say sitting is an insult. I should demand a Segway piece of crap so that I don't have to sit at work.

2004-02-09 12:48:46 PM
Why would someone leave a country packed with ponies to move to a non-pony country??

2004-02-09 12:50:33 PM
iollow

that's my point. if you spent $17k on a DVD burner you have serious mental issues. if you spend $5k on a scooter you have serious mental issues.

the segway would cost about 500 bucks without that stupid gyroscope (sp?), all they'd need is a third wheel.

2004-02-09 12:50:34 PM
Since a Segway is controlled by leaning while standing, how in the hell could a parapalegic use it anyway?

2004-02-09 12:50:37 PM
I would like to see the news ban segue ways......

2004-02-09 12:53:52 PM
Damn those dumbass paraplegics and quadraplegics. they look cooler in a wheelchair anyway. RTFA dumbasses.

2004-02-09 12:54:49 PM
someguy50 and everyone else

If you have MS (and can't walk well at all, but can stand) it is less demeaning to use one of those than to use a wheelchair or (like fat people who can barely waddle) a scooter.

You're on eye level, not being (literally) talked down to.

A writer known as "Okeechobee Wind," who described recently being refused entrance to Epcot on a Segway, plans to spend less money at the resort because of the policy.
"There are times when confrontation causes the pixie dust to not do its magic while at Disney," wrote Okeechobee Wind, who did not respond to an interview request.

"Okeechobee Wind" then got into his VW bus and drove away with his son "Starhunter Lightbrow" and his daughter "Crystal Moonchilde," saying that he had to go pick up his wife "Dances With Hippies."

It's a liability issue. As soon as Disney allows a disabled ( or a non-disabled )person to ride a Segway in the park, some other farker in a Scooter will crash into them and cause a fall and predictible "injury". Since Disney has the proverbial deep pocket - they'll be the one that gets sued.

Disney would even be sued if they required the Segway owner/rider to sign a waiver against injury.

Disney would argue assumption of risk by the Segway user, but the Segway owner's attorney would argue that Disney could have prevented the anticipated collision by providing Segway operators a "Segway Only Path", a series of lines painted down the middle of the streets, like those @*&^%$* HOV lanes.

Then Disney would have to hire extra employees to make sure the Segway lanes were policed and kept clear of Scooters, strollers and other non-permitted persons.

What a nightmare.

/I'd love to ride a Segway

How are quadraplegics and such using a STAND UP scooter? I don't understand. They can't stand up, that's the whole reason they need a scooter or whatever. I am seriously confused!!

2004-02-09 12:57:22 PM
Look at me! I made use of the clever rhetorical device known as "MOCKERY"! Ph33r my mad ski1llz!

Art Bell told me that cities would be designed around this breathtaking invention. He told me that it'd change the world. Then he went on to discuss the HAARP project, the nefarious nature of contrails and the extraterrestrial origins of various piles of rock.

Maybe I shouldn't have felt so betrayed when I found out that Segways cost five grand and look goofy.

Some midget should sue segway because he can't reach the handles.

2004-02-09 12:59:28 PM
Does anyone know the weight limit of a Segway? I'm just waiting for the inevitible lawsuit from some lard-ass claiming "discrimination" because it was designed with actual humans in mind.

"What do you mean the limit is 500lbs?! How am I supposed to get to Burger King - WALK??!!"

http://www.naafa.org/

It WILL happen.

Yeah, probably.

True, but I think the gyroscope is there because without it, and using a third wheel, bumps can make you fall forward or backward because your center of gravity is over a small base.

I personally wouldn't want one though. Rollerblades suit me just fine, they don't need batteries, they're cheap to repair, and they make you about 3 inches taller :)

Cygnis-x

I guess that would be funny if it was legal for pedestrians to walk around town guzzling beer. Most places I know, there's laws about that.

Most pointless photoshop I've ever seen.

I can't say I know for sure, but the apostles James and John were known as "Sons of Thunder." Their dad's real name was Zebedee, though.

The Segway, as an assistive device, has its faults. A scooter and a Segway can both be dangerous, but a scooter has more built in controls.

You can control the power that is used when you accelerate using a scooter. A Segway's speed is controlled by leaning- not good for many of the nerve disorders where balance is a factor. Also, a scooter can do at most 6-8 miles an hour. Segways can do up to 15 mph. Huge difference in bone crunching potential.

I like Segways because they let the disabled be the same height- a huge increase in self esteem, but they aren't where the need to be as far as helping the disabled.
