Well, I don't recall France offering to fly them over the first time either.

I see France is up to their cheap tricks again.

I notice a distinct lack of citation in the offer that is proposed to have been reneged. It probably exists, is this just shiatty journalism ?

One of my first thoughts when I read this yesterday.

That's OK. At the rate things are going, the Germans are going to end up running France again anyway.

FTFA : "Perez said "it was common knowledge" that France was footing the bill for airfare - as much as $7,000 for two people - especially since it sponsored the trips of American vets 10 years ago for the 60th anniversary. "

People really thought that France was going to spend 400*7000 = 2.8 million dollars to fly in veterans ?
Really ? (I assume the "$7000 for two" figure would have to pay for the veteran's wife)

On June 6, World War II veterans from America, France and Britain and other Allied countries will gather at Sword Beach to remember the largest sea invasion in history and the campaign that turned the tide in the war against Hitler.

Someone forget to invite the Germans? I know there wouldn't be a lot of celebratin' on their side, but maybe the Allied fellows can slap them in the hearing aid as the come up from the beach.

btw, thank yanks - arriving a couple of years AFTER the invasion after arming and funding the nazis during the invasion ... yea... thanks guys. Hooray for the red white and blue !!

Come on, it was "common knowledge" ! How much proof do you need ?

I'm surprised people are angry about the French not paying for this.  It's not because they're French, it's because they're government.

Did they get it in writing? If so, publish and make them look bad until they pay out.
Not in writing? "Overzealous staffer" defense.

If the White House wanted to earn some points, they'd have some tickets and hotels ready to save the day.  Even the Koch brothers could earn brownie points with a move like that.

FTA -- Among those now in the lurch is 90-year-old Felice John Tulli. He was only 18 when he landed at Omaha Beach with the 29th Army Infantry Division's 116th Battalion.

Either Tulli was part of an advance party which landed in 1942 to soften up the German defenses or Tulli can't count or the NY Post editors can't count.

"Our chief-of-staff heard it from the French Embassy in DC - that they would be flown out to France [for free]," said Nick Iacono, a spokesman for the Staten Island congressman."

"Perez said "it was common knowledge" that France was footing the bill for airfare - as much as $7,000 for two people - especially since it sponsored the trips of American vets 10 years ago for the 60th anniversary."

....heard it from
....common knowledge.

See.  Proof.

Maybe they should invite some Russians, and explain to them how D-day turned the tide of WW2.

Oh, and the surrender happy French! The ones that didn't capitulate till they fought and lost a war, but still fought on as the Free French. Remembering to explain how they should be so grateful that its a disgrace they didn't pay for the tickets, and their food sucks.

Sounds like someone said something they shouldn't have. But at this point, you really don't have a chance from a PR standpoint if you don't get them there. Might not even be half that many left for the 75th.

And Panzer divisions weren't 100% AFVs. They started as 2 tank regiments and a motorized infantry regiment. As the war progressed the OKW steadily increased the infantry component, to the point that most of the Panzer divisions at Kursk were 1/3 tank regiments and 2/3 infantry regiments (not counting all the anti-air, artillery, and other support units).

Typical rage fodder for The Post's middle aged white male constituency. They tried to work Obama into the story by linking him to Hollande. Somehow, I am sure he is not completely without blame.

Nothing to see here, move along.

NY Post? It's shiatty journalism. This is an unsupported claim made by some idiot staffer for some nobody congresscritter who apparently heard it from 'the French Embassy', something that's apparently 'common knowledge', aka, total rumor.

it won't be the Germans next time. it'll be Putin, and if we have any sense we'll let him have it. France gives nothing worth while to the world anyway.

That, or the old guy is a liar.  It's not unknown for people to lie / embellish their military service.

With regards to perspectives from the Allied invasion right alongside perspectives of the Germans defending against the unstoppable horde of invading Allies, read this:

Two Sides of the Beach

It's fascinating.
