The biggest issue people will take umbrage with here will probably be the notion that autism is a punishment.

She added that she 'believed that God's payback was to give my son autism.'

Ah, corruption of blood, sins of the father, etc. Good old Testament God.

Ah yes. The kind, benevolent, all loving God who gave us Jesus Christ to shed blood for atonement of our sins and bring redemption and peace to mankind. He's exactly the one that smited your child with the autism for the crime of abortion.

It had nothing to do with your uterus, genetics, and immune system. Nothing at all.

This.

Autism isn't Down syndrome. Your kid isn't broken. They just may have a harder time expressing themselves. Plenty of really smart people are autistic and successful. Of course, there are degrees of autism. But, autism isn't really a bar to anything.

She didn't have much of a choice but to abort - accutane causes some serious damage to a fetus. The packaging of the meds has all sorts of scary photos and warnings on it. (Also, no doc would let you take it without being on BC because of that.)

You don't get punished "by God" by for having an abortion any more than you get punished by God for having an appendix out or getting your haircut. Isn't Toni B a known cray-cray anyway?

Well, it depends.  There's "I don't like looking people in the eyes, I'm emotionally disconnected, and I tend to obsessively accumulate knowledge on specific subjects" which is generally not a bar to anything, and then there's "I don't speak and cannot be touched by another human without risk of a severe reaction" which can be a bit of a dealbreaker in most job interviews.

It's related to the idiotic prosperity gospel that says you're healthy, happy, and successful ($$$$) because God loves you, so you must be righteous person. Congratulations!

So, if God gave me Thyroid cancer because I masturbated too much, did the surgeon commit a sin by removing the Thyroid?  Or did God change his mind and chose to save me because.... reasons?  Have I unknowingly entered a new covenant with God?  Does he promise not to punish me with Thyroid cancer ever again, like Noah and the flood?

And are my wife's health issues punishment for HER sins, or mine?  I can never tell.

The both funniest and saddest thing about the American people is their fascination with the cult of celebrity. Just because a person has been in a TV show or movie, just because a person can throw, catch, or hit a ball doesn't automatically make them a font of all learning. Being famous doesn't mean that you continuously vomit forth nuggets of inspired knowledge that the media is obliged to smear on every wall and screen. If these folks were ignored then the media would return to covering things that they are qualified to report on like NASCAR and reality shows.

There's a spectrum, which is what I said. Some autistic kids lead perfectly normal lives and some don't.

I'd have to say that particular case sounds like Down syndrome, however. Not that he couldn't have both, that is.

Autism is, mostly, a social disorder. Autism is a disorder of neural development characterized by impaired social interaction, verbal and non-verbal communication, and by restricted, repetitive or stereotyped behavior.

You know, my position on abortion has evolved somewhat. I've always been fairly pro-choice, but I had reservations about late-term abortions without medical reason.
However, I finally came around to a more-or-less 100% at any time conclusion.

Basically, it boils down to personal rights of the mother, of course. There's the argument that the fetus at some point becomes a person and must have its rights enter into consideration as well. Some people in the pro-life movement put this personhood at the moment of conception, some at various other stages. At any rate, the argument generally boils down to whether or not another person has a right to use your body however temporarily and regardless of what sort of prior consent you may or may not have given or implied.

So, let's look at an analogous situation: let's say you put your name down on the bone-marrow donor list. Let's compare the two situations:

Having sex (voluntarily) = Putting your name down on the bone marrow donor list

Abortion to save the life of the mother = Not going through with the donation because you're in a high-risk category and it would put you at undue risk, obviously okay

Abortion after rape = Not getting your bone marrow forcibly extracted, obviously okay

Abortion due to severe fetal defects = Not consenting to go through a relatively unrisky (but painful and not risk-free) procedure for someone who would see relatively little benefit, obviously okay

Late term voluntary abortion for no reason other than convenience = This is the one that the pro-lifers think happen all the time and in fact happens basically never, but still, this is the one that often needs to be defeated the most. See below.

In the final situation, some woman gets pregnant, waits months before deciding that she just doesn't want a baby, after the baby has a brain and is in theory a person. She aborts the baby for no reason other than she feels like it (once again, this happens basically never).

This would be like saying you'd donate bone marrow to someone, and waiting until they have undergone radiation therapy to kill off their existing marrow. At that point, that other person will absolutely die if you don't consent to giving them your bone marrow (i.e. let them use your body). You get to that point and then say "no, I do not give consent to you cutting open my body and removing part of it." You're a horrible person (and it's not "slut shaming" to say that in that situation), but it is still your right. I don't think it's ever okay to get into a situation where suddenly we have a right to perform surgery on someone without their consent.

It's sort of analogous to a situation with an already-living kid. Say my child is really sick, and my bone marrow could save him. The state has no right to hold me down and forcibly extract my marrow to give it to my kid, regardless of how "right" it is. Now, if I refuse to go through with it, that makes me a bad father, but that doesn't trump my right to bodily integrity.

Same with sex-selective abortion. It's wrong. It would be like me signing up for the bone marrow donor's list and agreeing to do it and then backing out when I find out that the recipient is a girl, or a Muslim, or something. I'm a horrible person for making that choice (and I'd tell a woman having a sex-selective abortion she's a horrible person), but nobody has the right to cut open my body without my consent.

Anyway, just my two cents.
