I never whined like a freakin' crybaby about it the way many of my friends did/do, but I still don't really miss Bay to Breakers day in San Francisco.  It's a pretty dickish event.

I loved it. Of course, I didn't live along the course but was able to adjust my day just fine. Ran in it a few years and it's just fun...the costumes, the mostly happy party atmosphere, the salmon migrating upstream, the loud music, and just the general vibe itself. San Francisco is just a beautiful city too.

Drunk Guy: "Who is Dances with Bison?"
Stands With a Fist: "It is the name all the people are calling you now."

Way to respect the environment libs.

There are bison there? [google] I guess so. Hey, here's a fun fact:

... when the tail is in a relaxed position, the animal feels undisturbed. ... When the tail is slightly raised, the bison is displaying mild excitement. As the animal fills with nervousness, the tail will arch, often followed by a bowel movement.

Yet when a person does that, people say it's unnatural!

/so I've heard

I've never harassed a bison to its face, but I've said unkind words about yacc to others.

jtown: Why is there a bison paddock in San Francisco?

I guess it seemed like a goof idea at the time. It is a fun place to drive by with out of towners.

I want to walk B2B someday, have no illusions of trying to run it.

Walked it today for the first time. It was an absolute blast. But then, I'm no bison.

Something to do with William Hearst and war rationing, at least at first.

why NOT?
I grew up watching the bison. They've been there since the 1890's
Naked B2B bison harassing jerks deserve a good goring, if you ask me.

I first recall seeing them when I was about 5, so about 45 years or so ago. I stood on the middle wooden rail with my parents holding me up while the Bison (who were on the other side of the paddock) were deeply involved in completely ignoring us (I wasn't nekkid though so the police apparently didn't care).

Since then the Bison have never been a destination for myself or anyone I know. Sure you might drive past them while navigating through the park to get to the other side of the park and a wrong turn (defined by roads being closed so you had to find an alternate way around the Polo Fields) took us past there but I suspect that very few people make the Bison a regular stop in their visit(s) to the park aside from the people who take care of them. Kind of like the fly fishing ponds. It's certainly not a tourist destination for two reasons. Firstly it's well off of the beaten path and secondly it's very boring as you are essentially looking at some cows and bulls in a semi-open field chewing cud while you get to smell their various somewhat offensive odors as they waft to the east on the now not quite so refreshing ocean breeze.

That's not to say that I approve at all of harassing them for the "Crime" of being boring to watch. If someone wants to stand outside the paddock and passively watch them then I say more power to them (it's a bit pathetic given everything else to see in the park, much less the city but who am I to judge). I suspect that these idiots tossed a few pinecone's or something at them to get them to move or whatever and were hauled away for it. They must not have heard about Tatiana the tiger at the zoo from a few years ago. Getting hauled off is just them being saved from themselves.

Protip! Don't hassle semi-domesticated wild animals that weigh 3-8x as much as you, especially if they have sharp teeth, claws, horns or hoofs. You will lose. The Bison have no real reason to try and get out. They have shelter, a constant food source and a feeling of safety. That's all that they need. Mess with that and you might not like the results at a personal level.

Won't someone think of the beasts and the children?

They of course save the best for last here.
