The Zune user interface was actually pretty cool, and a lot of the work done for it lives on in Windows Phone. Spend $60 for a non-contract Lumia 520 and pop in a 64 GB memory card and you have a pretty sweet Zune HD replacement for around $100. You can even drag and drop tracks right to the device, or get unlimited music downloads via Xbox Music Pass for $100 a year (it's subscription, but if you listen to one new album a month it basically evens out in cost).

Of course, that said, with the release of WP 8.1 they have only now gotten around to fixing the bug in Xbox Music in where it didn't handle multi-disc albums correctly (it would play disc 1 track 1, disc 2 track 1, etc instead of playing them in order), and it STILL lacks gapless playback, so there are a few places for improvement.

So...well, that's all I got.

I've been trawling the Popular Mechanics archive and I keep finding the first instances of crap being sold as innovative, just turns out to be old. Found the Slapchop in 1926, the Tap-light in 1932, the giant wheel-bucket excavator as a childrens toy in the late 20s.

I'm currently working on bringing a novelty from back there up to a modern remedy for something. It wasn't versatile with what was available in 1930, but with a smartphone or tablet it'll work just fine.

Xbox Music is a great service with a horrible name.  The Windows 8 app is the only Metro app I really use, and it's awesome on Windows Phone.  The Android version isn't quite as good (it doesn't let you download to the device at the moment, just stream, but you still have access to the entire catalog) but I'm hoping that improves with time.  I suppose I could just repurpose my Lumia 920 into a portable music player and do things that way...

Still, tying the name to the game console where such a service would be of dubious quality seems like a major marketing blunder to me.

There's a printmaking technique called "Polaroid transfer" that can make some fairly interesting images if you're competent with it. It's dead without Polaroid film, so even though I think there should be a national "Kick a Hipster in Their Ass Day", I'm OK with this.

If they don't do it directly, they get people to do it for them.

PBS had an interesting Frontline episode not too long ago  (  http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/pages/frontline/generation-like/  )

It mostly focuses on teens and young adults getting fed information and :"liking" it or "retweeting" about it but they do plant information at various places and trying to make it go "viral".

They interviewed one girl who spends hours a day online following anything she could find about The Hunger Games.  She even seemed to realize she was being used, but she was so enthralled when one of the actors replied to one of her tweets that she couldn't help herself. ("fame by association" they called it).

I saw the Yuengling's Ice Cream somewhere a while back (probably here on Fark) and now they're back getting a little more attention.

I'm sure they have a facebook page and a twitter feed.  I just checked.  Of course they do.  The Ice Cream itself even has its own Twitter feed.  I guess by separating the ice cream from the beer they can market it directly to children - and they are.

From their Twitter:

Because one of the fastest ways to get water-soluble compounds in your bloodstream is through your large intestine.  One of the major jobs of your large intestine is to pull water out of the thin gruel coming from your small intestine to make a reasonably solid turd, so the membrane of your colon is insanely good at absorbing water - and anything that dissolves readily in water.  Want to get high as a farking kite really fast and with just a little bit of the drug?  Then make an enema and inject it up your butt.  You might want to be already in the bathroom, though, because you might be too wasted to get to the toilet in time otherwise

The best candy for stabbing yourself in da mouf.

When Spangler bought them, they inverted them to avoid lawsuits. (I think they made them in Brazil, though.) I don't know if the new company turned them shiv-side-up again.

(My aunt's ex-husband and my cousins are Spanglers and work for the company in Bryan, OH.)

I was cleaning out my attic the other day.  I gave my 5 year old some legos and some other stuff I had saved.  His eyes lit up when he saw my bag full of micromachines.  He has played with them non-stop since.  I imagine if they went back to basic sets and advertised a little, they would sell again.
