"Is Paris full of Nazis and has Michael Jackson been reincarnated?" would be excellent question-as-a-headline material.

Good advice. I'll start with your comment.

FTFA:  Well, if you don't want to believe that in five years they couldn't sell a few hundred cars at a price above the recycle rate then I can't help you, because you must be so paranoid you think that Fudgie The Whale is the secret symbol of the illuminati.

I chuckled.

Yeah, the initial article struck me as bullshiat. Good to have my skepticism confirmed.

2014-05-18 05:08:02 PM
Since I'd seen those at the height of the global recession and the article didn't mention "just like at the height of the global recession" I figured things were out of context.

If you didn't think so before, you should reconsider that possibility now that their unsold cars story is demonstrably bullshiat.

Saw the original article posted on Facebook today...also saw my comic relief friends and family going into frothing rages over Obama's destruction of the global economy and speculating about the environmental impact of thousands of cars sitting around full of gas, unattended (yeah really!) I found the whole thread very entertaining.

No, this represents a misunderstanding of paranoia. ZH often comes up with some interesting facts that the mainstream media overlooks. The problem with ZH is what they do with those facts, which is spin them into a parade of horribles. It's like the night sky man, full of stars, and a person can see in them either the wings of a flying horse or a demon crab.

That's the best part of all of this, is that everyone now knows that ZeroHedge is batshiat insane.

FTA: Automakers will probably idle plants this summer to make up the difference, depending on how quickly they imagine sales will rebound.

Can confirm. Work for a large auto manufacturer. One idle day is in a week or two, one in a month or so. Another of the plants is shutting down for a week in July.

Die off and then turn into oil in a few gigalennia so we can pump it back up and build more cars!

I gave up on Zerohedge when the Iran War continued to not happen.

2014-05-18 05:44:36 PM
Automakers are building them as fast as they can.  This year, (as last) Summer shutdown in many plants is 1 week instead of 2.
Although I expect that will be the "new normal"--if you got your projects installed in 1 week last year, well, guess what--you just bought it.

All ZH did was copy/paste an article that someone else had written.

Every once in a while, someone does the math and points out that our landfills will be incredibly useful resources for future generations. The amount of copper and gold alone in most older landfills is higher than a lot of productive mines.

I missed the original article, but I have a little insight.

I was working at a dealership a decade ago as a side job for some extra cash.

We had a large number of PT Cruisers dumped on us by Chrysler who kept pumping out cars even though sales were on the decline. These cars were rumored to be filling up parking garages and we put them on an incredible sale. Customers could get them for about $5,000 off, which, I'm pretty sure, is rock bottom price.

The cars got sold. The story behind why they kept getting pumped out was that Chrysler had union workers that had to be paid no matter what.. They couldn't be laid off willy-nilly due to union contracts. Chrysler assumed wrongly that the sales slump would correct itself in short time, so it started storing cars. Then when the slump got worse, they started selling at very low prices. Then of course, they flopped and took a bailout from the government (which was paid back, contrary to conservative misinformation). Anywhoo, those cars did get sold, but they were hoarded at first due to shortsightedness.

I don't recall anybody disputing chrysler repaying their debt.  It's GM that left the people 12 Billion in the hole.

2014-05-18 09:02:28 PM
But mostly, this article lacks any reasoning for how or why, as in how are car companies finding the money to produce millions of unsold cars and why are they doing it?

Almost every conspiracy theory falls apart at this point. At best there's a generic nefarious "out to spy on patriots/hide their rise to power/crush their enemies" spin for everything, but evidence of motive is always what's missing.

And the rare times when it actually does happen, it usually turns out to be multiple layers of sheer incompetence. We all know about the US auto industry's history of willful blindness and stubbornness.

Honestly we're talking about car companies and you're talking about Chrysler.

Honestly, this isn't just a ZeroHedge problem. Most of them simply know better to write an article that can easily be disproven. I've encountered hundreds of articles in the regular press in my days that I know are to be bullshiat, but I didn't have the evidence to disprove them.

The large automaker I work for is idling 2 days over Memorial Day weekend, 1 in mid-June, and 2 days added to our semi-annual plant shutdown in July.  Our inventory has been coming back down to the 60 day range fairly quickly, but part of the idling is to retool for a new model we'll be making in the coming year.
