(YouTube)   Diet Coke and Mentos, when will you stop providing idiots a means to do stupid things? Not today, that's for sure (although we must admit it didn't go wrong in the way expected nor to whom expected)   (youtube.com) divider line 30

Wow. So many stupid. Very idiot.

Tired memes aside, this reminds me of some idiot in my high school chemistry class who decided it would be cool to pop a bunch of dry ice into a water bottle and close the top. Teacher saw it, grabbed from him and, while she tried to unscrew the cap, it exploded right in her hands. Nobody was killed, but the pressure wave caused enough damage that her hands were swollen to the point of being unusable for a couple weeks. If she hadn't grabbed it and ran it outside, it would have been worse.

How could it have been any worse?  It's a plastic water bottle.  Put it in the sink, and let it pop.

Have to say that as a science teacher, she should have known better than to try that. Evac the class to prevent any chances at hearing loss. If that's not possible, puncture the bottle with something.

Pretty sure you're underestimating the power of a dry ice bomb.

A fair point, though the layout of the classroom would have had everyone grouped together and running past the thing (he was sitting by the door). Teacher grabbed it and was out the door and away from anyone else in about 2 seconds. She had almost no time to react, let alone get 20 kids out of the room, so, with all due respect (seriously), she made the right choice for the benefit of her students.

I think that was Subby's point.
I am not saying we should kill stupid people.  I am just saying remove all the warning labels and let things take their course.  Preferably with the cameras running, for the entertainment of their intellectual betters.

Right. Use a sharp metal object, triggering an explosion (if pressure is high enough the puncture will be the initial vessel failure point) that will propel the sharp metal object into your face.

Just cause they are "science teachers" don't mean they are all that smart.  We had an after school chemistry make-up lab.  about 6 of us in attendance.  Teacher starts walking around to each lab station, opening the cabinet and shoving a candle in it.  The station in front of mine, she opened the cabinet, leaned in and WHOOOOF!    She was looking for a gas leak!

Girl next to me had her panty hose melted off.  Teacher returned to work about 6-8 weeks later.

/damn that has been 25 years ago....
// other chemistry teacher was a loon.  believed in exorcisms and would bring in liquor print ads and ask us to find the subliminal suggestions in each.

In fairness, mine was/is actually quite brilliant and an excellent teacher in general. The ones you mention, though... just wow. You in Mississippi, by any chance?

When I was a kid, I was watching a couple older teens making dry ice bombs where they would throw them out into the street to let them explode. One of the thrown projectiles wasn't going off as expected, so one of those teens ran out into the street o give it a good kick. The bottle exploded right when he got there, and one piece slammed into his shoulder. I remember a giant welt on his chest and shoulder, bigger than a fist.

Doesn't have to be diet coke, any coke will work just as well.  only reason diet coke is popular for that purpose is because it doesn't have any added sugar that makes a sticky mess if not properly cleaned up

Diet coke has a slightly higher level of carbonation, due to the sweetener.  It does work better.
