"This accident happened because they broke the rules and methods of construction," resident Pak Chol told The Associated Press. "After this accident, we must make sure that this kind of terrible accident never happens again, by sticking to the proper method of building."

I've heard putting rebar in the concrete works well.

You underestimate the situation. It was a public apology. A lot of dudes, dudettes and their families would end up in a camp, including a number of officials who actually did something wrong.

Aren't the homes over there made out of paper? Why don't they just buy some notebooks and a stapler and build their own?

North Koreans don't have access to the apology.

KNCA is hosted from Japan, which North Koreans can't access through their own internet.

When I read that quote I thought that it was either a terrible translation or it sounded like something an aparatchik would have said in 1020s Soviet Union.  It would have been followed by some statement about the filthy capitalist infiltrators who perpetrated this monstrosity would be purged and the glorious workers would be liberated to do the work the way it should have been done.

Killing the uncle makes him look badass. This makes him look like a failure, hence the concern. Concern for his image.

Yeah, the high casualties were probably from all the workers, managers, government officials, their friends, and families being "re-educated" for allowing such an accident to happen.

Yeah, this is why the US has building codes. They may be annoying as all fark sometimes but at their core they are necessary.

2014-05-18 12:43:12 PM
They had building codes there too, they just didn't follow them.  Even though they probably knew that by signing off on shoddy workmanship and bad methods, they were probably setting themselves up for a public execution.

So the question is, why would they do that?

Probably were under a very tight budget and schedule, also with the penalty of re-education or death, but with that threat more likely and immediate.  Just finish it however you can and hope it doesn't just fall over.  Things like that happen, look at the Russian space program.

I'm sure any surviving members of the families in the building will be immediately executed as spies, then everyone involved in the building will be next.  Must root out the running dogs!

This happened to a building in Bangkok some years ago when I was passing thru - turns out they omitted the column caps and the floors just decided that they would slide down the columns and make a much thicker first floor.

Concrete - wonderful in compression not so much in tension unless there's the right mix of steel inside.

That they even report this is a big deal I think but I'm not sure why.  One would think this would be a regular thing there.  Corruption, I mean.

I don't know about that in this case. They would've just kept it quiet rather than broadcasting it if they were going to purge everyone connected. I think the government must be under some real pressure. This happened in Pyongyang after all, their showcase city where the people who actually matter live, in an apartment that was probably not much shoddier than the rest of Pyongyang's apartments. They have to step carefully.

The problem is that we have discovered that is was not really Kimmy that ordered his uncle killed but rather the committer that really runs the country.  Kimmy is just a figurehead being used to keep the people in line and to give the people running the country legitimacy.  If Kimmy goes away, then the committee will have a problem getting the people to follow them as they are "nobodies" while Kimmy is the heir to his grandfather who fought the Japanese and really founded the modern country.  He became a "god" to the North Koreans and they willingly follow his successors out of loyalty to the grandfather.  The reason for the murder of the Uncle was to isolate Kimmy from someone he could trust as Kimmy was moving towards changing the system.  Now Kimmy has no one that he can trust.  There is no one in the government that Kimmy has made his friend and that will go to the wall for him.  Kimmy just does as he is told by the committee.  Too bad for the Koreans.

It does when you can get someone to sell you structural steel.  Given that NK is not in China's good books at the moment, I'm guessing they're not in the mood to given the current regime what it needs, nevermind what it wants.

Are you sure they have building codes there? It's a government that does not care at all about the populace, to the extent that they will allow their population to starve in the harshest, most brutal conditions in the world while spending shiat loads of money on missile launches and nuclear weapons.

It makes me wonder who this apology is aimed at and what is the reason for it.

Pyongyang is suppose to be the best city in North Korea. It is the perfect example of the Juche ideal and the socialist lifestyle to them. It is where the most important and loyal citizens live. When something like this happens it's just about the most visible place for it to happen.

They will find people to publically pawn this off on, and those people wil be executed. If this happened in any other city you wouldn't hear about it at all.

Wait a minute I thought Communism would put an end to this. I heard it was supposed to be the bestest of all bestest of governments. You know where there's no class and everyone is rich and have a full belly. Peace and harmony would reign through out the Glorious Workers Paradise. And a glorious New Golden Age will emerge. Therefore, whatever happened there is a lie perpetrated by jealous western governments.
