(KHOU Houston)   Hollywood portrays prom night as a magical rite of passage, an evening of romance and passion, the time when a boy blossoms into a young man. But Hollywood glosses over the part about finding your date dead in your hotel bed the next morning   (khou.com) divider line 43

"We are not sure at this hour what the cause of death is," said Det. Mike Miller, with the HPD Homicide Division
.... Police said they found alcohol and prescription pain killers in the hotel room.

It must have been Mr Green in the Billiards room with the candlestick!

Hollywood sells the idea that Prom attendance makes farking afterwards somehow mandatory.  That's not right.

Police said they found alcohol and prescription pain killers in the hotel room. They also told KHOU 11 News that the girl's boyfriend had called 911. They took him in for questioning, only to shed light on what happened.

Seems open and shut?  Maybe not..

They let their kids get a hotel room together on prom night?  I didn't think I'd already be yelling "get off my lawn you damn kids" when I was 40.

Her friends warned her not to stay with him. She is/was actually only 17 and her bf (legal adult) admits (all in the Chronicle article) that they were drinking alcohol that night ...

Why did they feel the need to include the quote from the hotel guest about what the girls were wearing to prom? He didn't contribute to anything except the idea that he's a perv.

And? We're there bruises on her throat? Barring some other evidence the most likely scenario is an overdose.

Opening sentence:

The Block family, in town for a basketball tournament, stayed at the Hyatt in north Houston Friday night, while the MacArthur prom was well under way.

Who are the Blocks? The girls family? The family of her date? No, they are random guests at the hotel that don't know anyone involved and have nothing to do with the prom.

Nice narrative you've set up there.

I actually spent most of yesterday evening saying that... In my defense, the "lawn" in question was the parking lot of my hotel, and the prom-goers were parking there to walk to the restaurant next door.

/these parking spaces are for people who have actually paid money to stay here
//the guy who got mad and squealed his tires while leaving the lot was particularly amusing
//especially when he hit another tuxedo-wearing idiot in the restaurant's parking lot

18-year-old Jacqueline Gomez, a MacArthur High School student, whose prom night would be her last.

Well if she was a senior it probably was even if she was still alive.
