They already have.  There are now 200 or so bitcoin clones, with names like litecoin, dogecoin, bbqcoin, ronpaulcoin (seriously), and so on.  Bitcoiners insist that these bitcoin clones are a joke and not real money, which is what everyone else says about bitcoins.
