This is an outrage?

The legislation was intended to decrease the sodium in beverages served to young students as a way to combat the nation's growing obesity epidemic.

I'm guessing there weren't many doctors consulted when they drafted this legislation

Is he also going after the "fruit juices" and "fruit" milks?  Those are worse considering their high levels of sugar.

They did one of these stories on my local news channel. They filmed the bins of milk during lunch. Guess how long it took the chocolate milk to disappear?

oh joy. The "government hasn't found a cure for cancer, balanced the budget for a millenium and sent Delta Team 6 after Justin Bieber so anything smaller than that is a waste of time" thread.

The state General Assembly earlier this week approved nutrition legislation that threatened to remove chocolate milk from public schools. But, drawing a line in the sand in the nanny-state debate, Democratic Gov. Dannel Malloy announced Friday that on the matter of lactose legislation -- he is intolerant.

You do know what you can do to get away with the need for a nanny, right? Be a farking parent that gets his kids moving and eating right every once in a while so the rest of society doesn't have to deal with 25 year-old Timmy's fourth bypass.

From banning chocolate milk to impeaching chocolate president; coincidence??

Oregon (maybe just Eugene) did this.

Milk consumption is down overall, and I can't blame the kids.  Nonfat and skim milk is disgusting.

Whole or bust.

Eh! Why not?  Schools have banned kids from bringing in any form of peanuts (even in their own damn brown bag lunches) because a few pussies react differently to peanuts.

People with allergies should be rounded up and exposed to mass quantities of their nemeses until they grow stronger or die. That is the only way to improve the human race.

Don't even get me started on schools wasting their budget on retards. They knew bought their ticket when they chose to be born that way, so I say let em crash.

Really?  999 kids should be restricted from bringing in their sandwiches because 1 kid can't handle one ingredient?  farking bullshiat.  Why not eliminate milk entirely so lactose-intolerant kids aren't put at risk?

Otherwise, yeah, I could drink whole milk all day.

Ahem:

It was amended to state that no drinks with added sodium would be allowed. Chocolate milk, incidentally, typically contains 60-90 milligrams of added salt, according to experts, though it's not considered a high-sodium beverage. The sodium is added to neutralize the bitterness of the cocoa.

Malloy does something sensible.  I'm shocked.

Peanut allergies can be fatal and most people prefer to have their kid come home from school alive.

Nonfat and skim are the same thing.  And when we were in school it was either whole or 2%,  Might as well have served me heavy cream to drink.

Peanut allergies are another manufactured crisis.  We never stopped recess because one kid was allergic to bee stings.  The teacher kept his epi-pen handy while he joined us in throwing rocks at the hive.

Since Obamacare isn't an insurance plan, or really a thing anyone "has" in any meaningful sense, how would anyone be "grandfathered in" after a repeal? I can understand a proposal to repeal, say, Medicare, and grandfather (so to speak) its recipients. But the ACA's benefits derive almost completely from the way it regulates health insurance (the ban on pre-existing conditions, the coverage mandate, the minimum standards of coverage), not from anything done directly for an individual (except for subsidies). It's like proposing to repeal a DUI law, but saying you'll "grandfather in" the pedestrians whom the law was meant to protect from drunk drivers.

So. they made this change to avoid giving the kids the equivalent sodium of less than 1/16th a teaspoon of salt?

Why do I suspect this is really more of a "this tastes good so obviously it is what is making the kids fat not that we feed them more calories than they burn." thing?

Not only did I love chocolate milk as a kid, I loved the milkshakes we got in high school.  I think those already stopped being served in my high school.

not serving milkshakes and chocolate milk counts as a prison.  I thought the shout was "Attica! Attica" not "Hershey! Hershey!"

When someone is having a pre-packaged chocolate milk I like to tell them this story. Dairy farms set aside milk that has too high percentage of blood in it. Since it's harmless, they use that milk for chocolate milk. The chocolate disguises the blood coloring and nothing is wasted. You can even tell them that you are kidding right afterwards - but shoot them a glance. The story can be adapted with high levels of mucus for the eggnog drinkers.

While it's not "legions" I do know of three kids in my kid's school that would be at least be at least hospitalized (if not dead) due to nut allergies.
