Campanula: HairBolus: Campanula: Prejudice against Southerners is a thing, ...
People, an accent is an accent, not an IQ proxy.

Yet white people who think they are unfairly judged by their accent are often the first to deride how blacks talk and bring up Ebonics.

Which somehow makes it acceptable when the shoe is on the other foot (or not on the other foot, as the case may be here)?

Like I said, I understand that there are plenty of Southerners who fulfill the stereotype. I am not one of them; as someone who is sensitive regarding her own accent, I'm not prone to deriding others for theirs. So if you'd kindly redirect that broad brush elsewhere, I'd be much obliged.

I think he's speaking toward the low- grade hypocrisy of some getting mad at one denigrating people with [accent A] while themselves denigrating those with [accent B].

Campanula: wellreadneck: Campanula: Grew up in central Kentucky with a pretty pronounced twang. I now work in academia, having lost my accent (intentionally). I can't tell you how many times I've heard "Wow, you're from Kentucky? You don't sound like it," said as a compliment.

Prejudice against Southerners is a thing, and trust me, I know the stereotype exists for reasons. But it has real consequences for those of us who happen to have grown up Southern and blue collar but have aspirations outside that mold. Last semester my labmate turned down a student looking for research credit in our lab because "his (Appalachian) accent was too thick." That was really her reason.

People, an accent is an accent, not an IQ proxy.

/I acquired one more lab monkey last semester than I had planned.

Cinci has a human rights ordinance, which protects people
from discrimination based on race, gender, age, color,
religion, disability status, marital status, or
ethnic, national, or Appalachian regional origin.

That's quite cool! I'm wondering how common this in among Appalachian states. I know some Kentucky schools that have diversity programs that include students from Appalachia, but I don't know about cities.

No others that I'm aware of.

By any chance, have you read Creeker?

And that wasn't a hillbilly, it was a trustafarian. The professor must be new.

Boone has its share of both rich hippies and country folk, but the latter don't wander onto campus often, and certainly not for classes. There is some decided "town and gown" tension here.

A tempest in a teapot, but a good entry to discussing the American left's class snobbery. Lefties (especially the center lefties who rule the academy) have alienated poor, and working class whites by abandoning populism in favor of slick, smug, cosmopolitan intellectualism. Liberals hate rural people. They pity and loathe uneduated people. They're disgusted by white poverty. They mock rural traditions and rural values. And this class snobbery has created a vacuum into which conservatives have happily packed guns, vainglory, fundamentalism, nationalism, paranoia, racism, and all the fried chicken you can eat-whatever it takes to exploit people's fears and insecurities and earn votes. So, the next time you're frustrated by the failure of gun legislation or health care legislation or public school funding or progressive taxation and you're wondering why all of those stupid peckerwoods in the red states keep "voting against their own interests" thank all the self-serving, elitist progressives whose class hatred has pushed half country into the arms of reactionaries. Poor white trash might be backwards and stupid, but they're not stupid enough to vote for people who think they're garbage.

I went to an engineering school in the 1980s, and they could not have given less of a fark about what we wore on campus. Seriously, you could show up to class in gym shorts, a t-shirt and barefoot, and no one would blink an eye. He always wore long slacks and a suit coat, but no shoes.

So they're vulnerable to exploitative tactics? That's not particularly flattering, and doesn't really reflect on academia all that much.

I grew up in a town (pop. 1000) where college was a thing for, maybe, one out of every ten kids in my school. The rest didn't go to college not because it hurt their feelings, but because the money wasn't there to make it happen. Or their grades were poor because their parents worked them like slaves so they wouldn't have to hire farmhands. Or their teachers saw them stumble over the word "neighborhood" in second grade and decided that they were illiterates who weren't worth teaching - not when Suzy Goldenchild could read the entire Riverview Journal before all her baby teeth were out.

"We're sorry, we're rejecting your application to our University because you grew up in a poor white rural community and have a Galveston accent," said NO ENROLLMENT COMMITTEE EVER.

Basically what we are seeing is the Urban/Rural conflict being translated into the Democratic/Republican Party conflict.

The decimation of the Urban Republicans and Rural Democrats is currently causing normal political conflict to mutate into seemingly unsolvable cultural conflict.

The first went in to see the counselor, who told him to take math, history, and logic. "What's logic?" the first redneck asked.

The professor answered, "Let me give you an example. Do you own a weed eater?"

"I sure do."

"Then I can assume, using logic, that you have a yard," replied the professor.

"That's real good!" said the redneck. The professor continued, "Logic will also tell me that since you have a yard, you also own a house."

Impressed, the redneck said, "Amazing!"

"And since you own a house, logic dictates that you have a wife."

"That's Betty Mae! This is incredible!" The redneck was catching on.

"Finally, since you have a wife, logically I can assume that you are heterosexual," said the professor.

"You're absolutely right! Why that's the most fascinatin' thing I ever heard! I cain't wait to take that logic class!"

The redneck, proud of the new world opening up to him, walked back into the hallway where his friend was still waiting.

Two hillbillies decide they want to improve their lot so they decide to enroll at the local community college. They go to the administrative offices and find out that there's an entrance exam they have to take, but they are lucky and can take it that afternoon.

They go in, sit down, and get to work on the tests.

"Hey, Billy Joe, this is tough! How do you spell 'farm'?" Jimmy Wayne asks.

"You idjit," Jimmy Wayne says, "It's e-i-e-i-o!"

Two hillbilly girls go into the big city to see the sights.  They happen upon a photography studio and decide to get their picture made.

The first girl asked "What's he doin'?"
The second answered, "Oh, he's gonna focus".

Couple of rednecks, Bubba and Junior are out workin', diggin' on this big hole. Hot, sweaty, covered in mud and not too happy about their pay. Bubba looks up and sees the foreman lookin' over the edge down at them, wearing his clean white clothes.

This upsets him, so he looks over at Junior and says "You ever wonder why it like dat?"

Junior looks up, confused and asks "Like wut?"

"Man, we down here in dis here hole, covered in mud and workin' 're asses off and not makin' nothin'. But him up thur, he don' do nothin' walks round in them clean white clothes and makes all da money!"

Junior don't stop shovelin' just shrugs and says, "I dunno, why don' ya git up there and ask?" So Bubba decides this is what he'll do. Gets up out the hole and finds the foreman.

"Hey, I gots somethin' I want to know. How come we down in that hole, hot and dirty and not makin' no money, then you come by all nice and clean but get all da pay? Why it like dat?"

The foreman stops and thinks for a second then makes up his mind. He leans over and puts his hand up against a tree. "You see my hand? I want you to punch it as hard as you can."

"Naw bossman, I cain't do that," Bubba protests, "I'll break yer hand!"

"No, you won't. Just go ahead," the foreman assures. Bubba hesitates, then takes at a swing with all his might. At the last second, the foreman moves his hand out the way. "That's why it's like that, stupidity."

Cursing and hurting, Bubba goes back to the hole and goes back to work. Junior starts prodding, asking what answer he got. Bubba just starts shoveling faster, his face turning red. After a few minutes, Junior can't take it. He grabs Bubba by the shoulders and asks "What'd he tell ya?! Why it like dat?!"

Bubba stops diggin' and starts to look around. But he can't find any trees down in the hole. So he holds his hand up in front of his face and says, "Ya see my hand?" ....

wellreadneck: from the commentssissyspaceship100

I knew this Sephardic Jew who was a consultant at a hospital I worked at who was from some place like Memphis and had this luxuriant river boat gambler's southern accent.  People saw him and would be expecting some east coast Lun Guyland accent and their eyes would open a little wider but that was about it until this New York Jew family comes in around their loved one and want to get the news and they're looking at him like a fellow tribesman, a brother Hymie and he starts out telling them about his disease and they interrupt him 4 times in the first sentence with these Woody Allen whines.  It was one of the funniest things I'd ever seen.  The more irritated they got the more laid back he got until finally they blurt out, "We want a second opinion." on a very cut and dried case. He stood up and said, "Well that's ya'll's right but since the diagnosis is based on lab results nothing is going to change." and left.  We go out in the hall and with a soft chuckle he goes, "I thought that was going to happen.  New Yorkers."

BlueDWarrior: I think he's speaking toward the low- grade hypocrisy of some getting mad at one denigrating people with [accent A] while themselves denigrating those with [accent B].
