A friend of mine did something like that. Having purchased two aluminum cones as military surplus, he added cardboard tubes and plywood fins. The result was two "missiles" about 2 feet in diameter and 8 feet long strapped to the top of his SUV. It looked really coll when he came by on July 4th.

At the time, I said "That looks cool, but the cops will eventually get tired of that - probably around Labor Day."

This was in 2001...

The real news here is that everyone involved acted reasonably.

Smith said he has no hard feelings. In fact, he said he would have been disturbed if nobody called police on his broken-down van."

What's become of America????

I'm amazed this story happened without a single tazering or even a hint of hysteria.

Good thing this didn't happen in Los Angeles. The van (and maybe the owner) would have some extra ventilation.

Given how this whole story started, I think the use of the tag barely meets the minimum requirement for it's use. It would have been closer to the FAIL tag level, but the reasonable actions knocked off a lot of points.

Why don't you come back when it's raining. You'll see these gutters really work. If it weren't for the powerful gutter consortium, I'd just have a little piece of metal over the doorway. But no. Your greed head overlords insist we have to have gutters.

How is a "tribute"? Was it is supposed to be? As far as I know our military arsenal doesn't include a van with red and white rockets strapped across the top, aiming straight ahead.

Does this guy think anything green with missile-like objects on it is some type of generic military facsimile? Wtf?

So at what point does this shiat really get stupid and not worth the money it takes to keep violating people's rights?

Rhetorical question.

whidbey: So at what point does this shiat really get stupid and not worth the money it takes to keep violating people's rights?

I imagine the way this happened is:

1) some soccer mom saw a camo van with "weapons" fixed to the outside of it sitting on the side of 440 near the airport, and called the cops wailing about "them turrrrists"

2) cops arrived at the scene in force, with bomb dogs and weapons ready to go, then realized the "terrorist" is some old beardy-weirdy with PVC-pipe "missiles" on top of his busted-ass van

3) everybody had a good laugh and the cops called for a tow

Even the dude with the wannabe A-Team van is cool with how things happened.

Besides, these were almost certainly Nashville city cops. Every interaction I've had with them has been pretty friendly. If it had been the state troopers, they might have given him shiat, because TN state troopers are largely assholes in my experience. In this case, the system worked. Cops took a suspicious situation (suspicious vehicle parked under the approach path of a major airport) seriously, nobody lost their shiat, guy wasn't doing anything illegal, and he was let go without getting roughed up or harrassed.

Whoever the hysterical hoplophobe was who called the cops just because this guy seemed to be exercising his Second Amendment rights needs to have their address published on line and receive death threats. For freedom.

Airports are holy ground, and must be protected at all costs, even if that includes human rights violations. A death or inconvenience there is worth 10 anywhere else.

This guy observed that our veterans are not getting much recogniton these last 10 or 12 years, and he is doing something about it.  It's getting Dusty in here.  He should add a giant loudspeaker that plays the anthem.

Really? I've been in the Navy since '84, and a war veteran since '91, and we haven't been as recognized as we are now pretty much ever. Certainly not since V-J Day. You can't walk six feet in uniform without somebody thanking you for your service, which sure didn't happen in the '80s.

/This, of course, does not translate to actually HIRING combat veterans, because who knows? That guy might snap.

2014-05-16 06:16:22 PM

SquiggsIN: Anyone with ill intent would be trying to camouflage the missiles, not the van. This wouldn't even phase me if it drove past. Of course, plenty of rednecks around here have camo paint jobs on their trucks/vans.

Yeah, it's too obvious--not real.

2014-05-16 07:10:15 PM
I don't think 99% of the public is going to interpret his van being armed to the teeth as some sort of tribute. More like wackjob militant armed to the teeth and ready to level a city.

These days employers only want people with current experience doing almost exactly what they will be doing in the job.  Veterans generally lack such relevant experience.
