In even older times it was pinball that was morally unacceptable.

I remember that the moral panic surrounding Mortal Kombat (I was in 7th grade) taught me 2 things:

1. Moral panics are based on exaggeration and projection by busybodies. Don't trust them (the busybodies, not the panics).
2. ALWAYS seek out "banned" media.

Think about this:

During the 2000 elections, Gore selected the co-creator of the much maligned ESRB Joseph Lieberman as his running mate.

Lieberman ranked surprisingly low among the 18-24 male demographic, most of whom knew Lieberman for his clueless outrage against videogames, especially Mortal Kombat.

These 18-24 males, many voting in their first election, shun the Democrats for picking a running mate so out of touch with the younger generation, vote for Nader or the "lesser evil" Bush.

Three years after Bush wins the election, he declares a war against Iraq.

And the lesson we pick up from all this? Don't Criticize What You Don't Understand Unless You Prefer Starting A War You Don't Want.

Remember it was not just Lieberman who was anti-video game, Tipper Gore was also on that band wagon.  That made the 18-24 year old males stay away from the campaign and the voting booths all together.

Throwback of Swedish Erotica from 1982

Do doo do do do mana mana do do do do

The panic reaction towards games started with pinball arcades, then video arcades, then Doom happened, Mortal Kombat, blah bblah.  There's always a "moral panic" over anything new.

I miss video arcades. Sure it reeked of stale cigarettes, but the MK and SF2 tournaments were badass. Plus I loved playing the 4 player games with my friends, like Ninja Baseball Batman, X-men, The Simpsons, and the Ninja Turtles.

The prices for sega arcade boards are insane. Like $7K for a lindbergh game.

Don't forget Hillary was all up in arms about GTA and the mods available for it.

Freedom of Speech is probably my number one issue.  Gore/Lieberman was an obvious anti-freedom of speech ticket (not just Lieberman, but Gore's wife also was a moral busy body censor (for her it was music)).  I therefore couldn't vote for them.

I don't vote for Republicans, so I voted for the Libertarian (Harry Browne I think).

Not that my California vote mattered anyways...

Is the world a better place today?  Less violent? More moral? Kinder? Gentler?
Nope. It starts somewhere. So, we know these things weren't the cause because...?

Right.  Don't dismiss things out of hand.
Don't assign value to things out of hand either.

I remember moving to a new town in the early 1970s when I was a youngster, and wandering into the local pinball arcade, which was inhabited by the most raggedy, red-rimmed-eyed, foul-smoke-smelling bunch of teenagers I'd seen before or since.  I've never seen a more wretched hive of scum and villainy.

Tipper was on the hunt against bad words in music.  I didn't know she was on the video game trail too.

In the Frank Zappa vs. Tipper Gore wars, I just had to side with Frank.

///voted for Al in 2000, but unenthusiastically.

Also correlates with a generation after the phase out of leaded gas and legalized abortion.  Probably a few other things, but I'd credit most of that to the end of leaded gas.  Probably safe to assume that FPS games aren't hurting anything.

Well judging by crime statistics ... yes, yes the world is a better place, less violent, more moral, kinder and gentler. I know reality harshes your narrative and facts have a liberal bias, but hey that is reality for you.
