Meh.  When I was a younger teen, living in the Adirondack mountains, our house didn't have any heat upstairs.  At all.  And it was 100 years old, and basically it was uninsulated by today's standards.  The only heat that got upstairs was the heat that made it up the stairwell and into the bedrooms, which wasn't much.

During the coldest months, I slept in a sleeping bag, because it would literally be freezing (or close to it) in my room when it was below zero outside.  If I left a cup with water in it at night, in the morning there would be a thin film of ice on it in the morning.

It wasn't that bad.

Then again, it would be warmer downstairs, so it may not have been that big of a deal.

If I were going to live all year on a boat, though, I'd make sure it's in a warmer climate.

TFA is about London, UK.  It really doesn't get that cold there.  Not by our standards.

At least the constant maintenance keeps them busy.

Is the increase in houseboat living caused by housing prices, or is it part of the general "simplify your life" subculture? Like the same subculture that's responsible for the tiny house movement?  You can't keep nearly as much crap in a houseboat that you could in a 2500-sq-ft house in a subdevelopment.

I lived on  a good sized sailboat for a few years. It can be done. New England winters and Florida summers sucked but driving 'the house' to a bar was pretty cool.
/I have way too much 'stuff' now...

A decent boat can cost as much as a house.

RTFA.  In the area they are talking about, apartments go for $3,000 a month.   Canal boats you can live in cost about $120,000.  You make up the difference within 4 years, even with the docking fees.

Do I think housing prices make a lot of sense? No. Am I glad I stretched to buy a duplex five minutes from downtown Seattle 11 years ago? Yes. Not at all looking to move but when I go to sleep at night I think... '2014, when it's all over that will be the year I look back on and say I should have sold my house, oh well.'

My God, subby. Please. It should be "As prices of houses soarses".

saw a show on discovery channel about houseboats in Europe, made of cement.  Big, square cement floaters with a house on them.  Pretty cool, from an engineering p.o.v.
