Luckily I've been preparing for this since the days of the 386.

Meh. Sounds like they were just trying to form the Bundeswehr to defend West Germany before the western allies gave the OK. Was mostly the same people.

I am very excited. No stupid-ass tacked-on multiplayer mode!

It is as I suspected. Former Wehrmacht officers created a sort of secret National Guard to protect West Germany in case the Soviets decided to heat things up. It was kind of like the KKK in constitution, only they functioned mostly as a spy ring and favored their occupiers, plus there are no reports of terrorizing minorities.

I loved that game.  Tossing grenades into rooms off screen, finding the bullet proof vests, sticking guys up.

Auf Wiedersehen, Schweinhund!

Many good memories of playing Wolfenstein 3d at this computer camp I went to for a few summers between the ages of 13-16. I didn't have a good enough computer then to play it so it was a  huge treat that I got to play it like every day in the computer lab. The year after that everyone was playing Doom and I got to play multiplayer on some really good hardware for the time. So awesome.

I have to say, I miss all the large scale FPS MP games / maps.  I really miss original TF on some of those huge maps.  Distance makes somethings more of a strategy and less of a twitchfest.

Loved the few Q2 64 player maps too, but deathmatch was insane on those.

Subby is talking about  Wolfenstein 3D, not  Castle Wolfenstein.

THIS is Castle Wolfenstein:

The best thing ever was holding up an SS officer with your empty gun, stealing his bullets, and then shooting him with the now-loaded gun.

Dammit. I had to spend the extra time looking for the SS being held up.

What's the over/under that the occupying governments knew all about this and tacitly approved of the idea a surprise army waiting to be tapped in the event the Reds decided to roll into West Germany?

Actually, that's how I always translated it for my self.

really hammers home the reality of war... poor dude was just a conscript. he had no agenda, just a job, and his job was to be one of Mecha-hitlers guards and help to defend the spear of Destiny.

next thing you know some one man killing machine rushes through the place and before you really know whats going on, you know that you'll never see your Maria again

Ever try Battleground Europe?  Five kilometer or so ordnance tracking ranges, one server covering most of Northern Europe at 1/2 scale, realistic weapons and vehicles.

Lost a lot of hours playing that over the years...

So the Nazis formed a private army after WW2 had ended? What, did one of them look at American history, specifically the formation of the Ku Klux Klan after the Civil War, and thought, "Hey, that sounds like a good idea?"

Not exactly. "It appears Konrad Adenauer informed both his American allies as well as the political opposition of the plan at the time."

Not a confirmation, but like I said, if they did know, I wager they would have at least turned a blind eye.
