Deputies say Kelly ... fired a single shot from a small-caliber

gun, striking Blake Wardell, 26 (right) in the chest

Thank you Daily Fail, had you not pointed that out we might all be confused that the 26-year-old is the one being held.

Reminds me of a video I watched some time ago, of a couple of redneck kids up in Tennessee who got their hands on a bullet proof vest.

Naturally, they had to test it out and I'd guess it never dawned on them that the vest would stop the slug, but the point inertia would continue on. That's why so many these days have a ceramic or metal plate over the heart.

So, this lean and rangy kid got shot, knocked back and swearing, tore the vest off as everyone laughed, to expose a compression hole in his upper left pectoral muscle. Bleeding and I'd say it hurt like hell.

Think of it as putting a cloth sheet over a wad of clay and jabbing it with the end of a pencil. The pencil will not penetrate the cloth, but it certainly will make a dent in the clay.

If it hit smack on the rib, it would more than likely break the rib.

I saw films of one of the first inventers of the current bullet proof vests, where he wore one and shot himself in the stomach with a hand cannon as a demonstration. The only thing I can say is that must have been one tough old bird to not fold up after being hit in the guts with the force of a mule kick.

His bruise afterwards must have been spectacular.

About 20 years ago a friend of mine got a hold of a vest, and wanted to try it out.
He draped it over a card box in his yard and shot it.

I felt sorry for the box because as it turns out, Kevlar goes bad after a few years.

Yeah... as a gun owner myself, I'm kinda rolling with "and nothing of value was lost" there.

As for the girl... I doubt she's going to get stuck with the whole five years (the maximum penalty).  Involuntary manslaughter via dicking around where the victim was participating and by far the dumber of the pair is traditionally the low end of the sentencing spectrum... she'll likely get something like probation, with the court considering the conviction itself to have solved most of the problem sentence regardless.

// Because convicted felons can't own or legally even handle guns in most states, barring something like securing a firearm that some other dumbass left lying around or something.

// Yes, many of the inventors of bulletproof vests would shoot themselves as part of their sales pitch.  However they (a) tended to have competent assistants, or know where to aim for a plate if aiming themselves, and (b) they were doing it in exchange for million-dollar contracts.  Having your drunk girlfriend take a potshot at you just to see what happens, for free, not really the same thing.

Who gets to be the arbiter... I could just as easily say "No rich people can breed." "No black people can breed" "No one making less than 50K a year induvidually can breed"

This is one of those issues where you think you can sit at your chair and figure it all out, but then as soon as you have to start actually applying it to the real world all kinds of dangerous shiat starts happening.

Also Brave New World wasn't any more of a how-to manual for the future than 1984 was...

To be clear, I have actually never publicly stated that before.... it was more in jest than anything. Plus I'm drunk so factor that in. But there is (and has been) a downward spiral in stupidity. Probably a natural course for beginning civilizations. Hell, at least we aren't tossing hot virgins to their fiery deaths.

On Wednesday, Blake's parent, James Wardell, eulogized his son in a heart-breaking Facebook post.

'You took the truth with you ill [sic] never know what happenbut when i got there i hope you heard me when i said i lopve [sic] u. i do,' he wrote.

That truly is heartbreaking, that a parent would eulogize his son using in such a half-assed manner.  Put a little effort into it, Dad.

what about nobody gets to breed until they are stable, financially, mentally, socially. Then and only then do you earn the right to apply for a child liscence.

Why not sterilise everyone to begin with, and only give the priveledge to functional members of society.

asbo's in the UK would suddenly become a thing of the past, as would the culture that tells their kids to get pregnant as quickly as possible so they can get free housing and free money, because it's their right as a citizen to breed and claim social for it.

It is a real culture, in the UK at least.

It makes me sick just thinking about it.

"Authorities say the bullet went through the lining and into Wardell's heart."

I'm trying to figure out the ballistics of this...
Assuming she aimed straight at his chest; how do you miss, it go through the "lining", and still hit the heart?
Assuming she aimed at his stomach, I still don't see how you miss and hit the heart when they're facing you.
Maybe he turned sideways?

I took the original comment as offering it as a voluntary option, which would avoid the "government intrusion" problem.  India used to do this, don't know if they still do.  (no, it wasn't $50k, it was like two bucks and a transistor radio).

There is a world of difference between bullet proof and bullet resistant.
Even a modern vest with a SAPI plate is still resistant not proof.
Well, a SAPI plated vest should stop almost any handgun projectile.
If it hits the plate.

Nah, that's too much.
Make the service free, plus $2000 tax free. Otherwise, you'll end up with people reversing the original procedure, just to get another $50k for doing it again.
