there are like 5 or 6 large, active fires. The 15 at the 76 is closed in both directions, the 5 on Camp Pendleton was closed earlier today. It's crazy here.

Yep- I picked a good day to NOT commute from O-side to San Clemente.

/I think we're up to 7 or 8 active fires now, there's one by CSUSM, and campus is evacuating.

I'm in Oceanside near the beach so not too personally worried - I only have 4 fires within a 5-mile radus of here. But my friends' condo off Alga Rd is like a block away from the Aviara Pkwy part of the Carlsbad fire, and I sent the software department home from our offices on El Camino Real & La Costa at 2PM. The sky is brownish and the sunlight has this sick looking yellow color and the air smells like ashes. Creepy.

91 Freeeway in Anaheim (Orange County) was also closed with a fire.  405 freeway in Los Angeles also closed by a fire in the median.

Fire season got here 5 months early this year.

Also all sorts of heat records being set.

People of Southern California, remember how, during the winter, you were chuckling about the East and Midwest's snow problems. Well, guess what?  No, go ahead, take a guess.

I wouldn't say we were "chuckling". the smart ones here were worried that this very event would come to pass.

Same. I'm near PCH & the 78, a couple blocks from the beach. I was supposed to have softball playoffs tonight at the new Alga Norte park, but those obviously got canceled; the barn (near El Camino Real & Poinsettia) where my wife rides her horse was evacuated -- 30-35 horses maybe? Not sure. Anyhow, might just head to the O'side Stone Store, sip beer, and watch the county burn.

Here is the thing, if it snows, well you wait a bit and it goes away or gets moved enough so life can resume.  Fire tends to consume everything and potentially kill you so you can't really wait it out.

Pretty much all of San Marcos south of the 78 is now under a mandatory evac. Unfortunately this includes my Dad in Lake San Marcos.

So, you're saying there were no deaths attributable to the various storms and/or the polar vortices we had this winter.  Only fire can kill, right?

I think that's probably the best area to be in the evac zone though. At least he doesn't live in San Elijo/Coironado Hills

Speaking of San Marcos, I could have sworn that they had discovered a scandal with the Coronado Hills area relating to fires just about a year ago. Something about them falsifying safety standards.

Yea... he was on the edge of the mandatory evac zone back in 2007 when CSUSM had a fire then too. On one hand, there's a lot of homes between him and the hills (he's on Discovery down from San Marcos High), on the other hand the 2007 Escondito fire shows that that means nothing.

The problem is we now have 7 major fires in San Diego County, 4 of which are threatening homes.  Fires are normal here when we have Santa Anas (high temp + high winds), but there is usually just 1, maybe 2 fires at a time.  You keep hearing the news crews saying "no air support seen yet".

ok, so San Marcos, Rancho Bernardo, and Fallbrook is on fire...and it's ok to call it "San Diego" - but Vivian calls a gathering in Oceanside a "San Diego Fark Party" and some of you get your panties in a wad...where are you now?  Why aren't you protesting that the fire is all the way up here in north county, and that the train lines don't run back south late at night so it's too far away?

Anyway yeah, was in LA (live on west Esco/East San Marcos border) and rushed home since wife was 1/3 the distance but me being in a bike I beat her by an hour.  The 5 and the 15 were both closed for a bit, but the 5 opened just in time for me to sneak through.  Wife says she almost felt like she was running from one of the fires.

Lots of them are being started by high winds slapping power lines around, just as they always are.  I wonder when they'll get around to burying the power lines?

Welcome to climate change. Fire season is going to be year round from here on out. There may be bursts of not so dry, but the norm of the southwest is going to be burnination.
