BigGrnEggGriller: Jster422: So nobody likes hearing others talk about how they do crossfit, but when the people that do crossfit hang out together so that they can, presumably, talk about it amongst people that they won't annoy, that's bad because they are now a cult.

No, it's in the cult "phase".  In 5 years it will be on the ash-heap of exercise fads.  Those of us who do some cardio and resistance training at a healthy rate just get annoyed (and maybe jealous)  when we see people getting rich off rubes like yourself.

I blame Jane Fonda for this.  Her exercise videos started all this and are on the bottom of the ash-heap.

Why would my theoretical workout and spending habits annoy you?  You've got this exercise and lifestyle thing all figured out, good for you - so you don't end up spending all the money that the 'rubes' do to accomplish the same thing.

So why aren't you just happy?  Where does the negativity come from?

In a way, this makes sense to me. Way fewer people have to support a large building and a lot of rotating equipment. I would expect the individual burden to be high. Also, a lot of people would pay for the privilege of having fewer crowds to deal with (and thus no competition for the equipment). Finally, you have built-in coaching/training sessions and group motivation.

Not saying I would personally pay that much to work out each month.... But I understand.

There's a CrossFit around the corner from my favorite hangout.  Running halfway around the block, via the alley, is something like 200 meters, which they do 4-8 times, half-mile or mile circuit.  Then they go back into the crossfit place and do whatever strength workout is next, then back to running in circles.  Usually about 2-3 times a day they have the workouts.  Summer is coming, and clothing is getting more and more sparse; that's both good and bad: the women are usually in skimpy yoga shorts with a t-shirt and obvious sport bra(and if we're lucky, they have just the bra on.  The guys are usually in the tight shirts and loose shorts.  As the warmer days hit, the women's outfits became essentially panties and bra, and most of the guys are shirtless.  Some of the women and men who have been doing the workouts for a while, I've seen the changes they've made in their bodies.  One girl started out chubby and is currently a svelt 110-120, after about 6-8 months.  I'd say it can change your life, but no more than any other workout program which you stick with.

/women are outnumbered by the guys about 8 to 1
//the girls are fun to watch, though

My wife and I tried paleo...its crazy. If I want a damned baked potato or bagel I'm going to eat it.

Unless you have Celiacs it's not the kind of eating that should be taken completely to heart.  Cherry pick the stuff that makes sense to you.  A whole new world of culinary wonders awaits you once you step into the world of eating different.

Ever roast a head of cauliflower in a spicy yogurt sauce?  Or make your own energy bars using no wheat products at all?

You don't have to go all wonky about it.  Just cut back the processed foods to as little as possible.  Make it yourself from scratch when you can.  It's worth incorporating into your diet.  Just don't be stupid about it.

The best general dieting rule of thumb I got from a paleo blog was to just stick to the edges of a grocery store. Fruits, veggies, meats are all on the outside loop and you can eat pretty much all you want of any of those. Go down the aisles as little as possible, that's where all the canned, boxed, processed shiat is.

For the most part that's right.  The Grade A maple syrup you'll have to brave the center aisles for.

go with B grade  -  less refined, more minerals n stuffs

B grade is for pancakes.  A is for use as a sweetener without an abundance of maple flavor.

we use B as sweetener both in coffee & in recipes. both maple flavored and otherwise.
/i couldn't tell you how really

Its everybody who came to it after a certain point.  If you weren't clearly physically gifted as a kid (the kind that moves and climbs and has great gross and fine motor skills) and didn't play team sports, you probably don't have the awareness and body control to move properly.

Lifting weights properly is all about synchronized activation of the appropriate motor units.  its not something you can just pick up with no coaching, because you have no idea how it all feels.

The first time I REALLY used my medial glutes (a long time after I started trying to get proficient) I was honestly like, "Wtf am I feeling there?  That's way better!"

I wasn't drinking enough water and was doing a brutal 5x3x1 rotation at 85/90/85% 1RM 3 days a week, plus a cross-fit-ish routine on alternating days (we called it "functional strength training" in those days - tire flipping, sledgehammering, sandbag hauling, that sort of thing).

OW. That's a lot of heavy lifting.

Yeah.  Oh, yeah.  And not nearly enough rest.  5x3x1 is a perfectly cromulent protocol - if you rest appropriately.  Sessions happen every 4-6 days, usually.  But if you do Squats, Bench Press, Deadlift, Cheat Curl and Tricep Pulldowns for 3 sets of 1 rep at 85/90/85% 1RM (resting 3 minutes in between), you will definitely get strong, no doubt.

was it also a vegetarian restaurant ?

No, but it had something to do with the sauces that all of the meats were in.  There was no tandoori chicken or anything like that.  One of the waiters was a young Indian guy and he knew about the whole thing because he was cross-fitty.  He was like "yeah, not much".

perhaps sugar in the sauce is the culprit - which depending on how hard core you/they/me are trying to be about it, can be excused for a night out kind of thing. doesn't mean you have to wash it down with the whole tray of pita bread.

Except that when you've been eating paleo (or any kind of keto diet, which paleo pretty much is for the most part) for any real length of time, 'cheating' tends to make you feel like shiat physically. A small amount isn't bad, but anything more than a very small amount, and you will feel like you have either the flu or a stomach bug.

Yes, I do eat a modified keto diet, and yes, cheating on a scale larger than a gram or two (roughly one to two thirds of an ounce) of something I'm "not supposed" to eat makes me feel unwell. But I've been on modified keto for about five years for health reasons on the advice of doctors and not as part of some kind of fad, so there might be a bit of a difference there.

steamingpile: brap: You'll be in the best shape you've ever been within three months, which will great for the nine months you will spend recovering from your severe spinal injury.

Exactly, Cross fit is horrible on joints and is basically cheating at regular exercises.

Also does anyone have the pic of the exercise fad inventors? All of them are ripped up except the Cross fit guy looks like a pudgy accountant, which is understandable since it made him rich. Gimmicks usually do.

I know crossfit acolytes can be rabid and annoying about their program. It's unfortunate that their extreme enthusiasm for a fitness program pushes more people away than it brings in. It's ok if you don't like Crossfit; it's not for everyone. fark, exercise isn't for everyone. Do what makes you happy. But don't just start making shiat up just because you don't like it.

The truth is, Crossfit hasn't done anything new. Cross training has always been around. They're just the first to put it in a shiny package and successfully market it to the public. To say Crossfit is bad on your joints or makes one prone to injury (especially spinal) is record breaking ignorant. Plyometrics is good for you. Olympic lifting is good for you. Metabolic conditioning is good for you. Nothing in the program is horrible on your joints unless you're careless with form; but that goes with any workout regimen.

The pudgy guy who founded Crossfit that everyone calls "Coach" also walks with noticeable limp. That's because he used to be a gymnast and permanently injured his back waaaay back in the day. He dedicated the rest of his life to exercise physiology. If it were possible for him to exercise, he would.

On another note, I know everyone associates the Paleo diet with Crossfit. I've always found that a bit odd since The Zone was always the main nutritional program for Crossfit, and is a much better program imho. But just like exercise, follow whatever dietary program best suits you.

I came here to say this.

Jesus H. Christ, no one cares about how your run was today.

I only know one marathoner whose run length I give a shiat about. Dude's lost an entire person's worth of body weight in about a year--by taking up running & weightlighting and by changing his diet...hasn't ever done crossfit or any of that shiat. Did everything on his own, by doing his own research and coming up with his own exercise and dietary plans (and by putting down the damned fork, not eating McDonald's and shiat like that and not complaining he couldn't do it on a low income when he makes about 23k a year). A year ago, he was a full on couch potato with a waist size almost the same as his height. Now he wears size 36 waist jeans. Just ran his first half marathon, with a full marathon coming up later this year.

Sometimes, it can be a good thing when people post that shiat--keeps them accountable. Other times, they're talking shiat because they need to be at the gym in 26 minutes.

Crossfit is notoriously bad on training in proper form.  I've lifted a loooooong time, and no cross-fit enthusiast I've ever seen (unless they were a proper lifter before) can do a squat for shiat.  Or any Oly lift.  Jesus - you've now progressed to weapons-grade stupid.

Actually, having plates the same size as 45s but of differing weights allows you to keep the bar at the same level on the ground for lifts like clean, snatch and deadlift. They're just training wheels.

I don't see the point of using them for bench or press, but...

Well using a standard diameter bumper plate keeps the height of the bar on the floor consistent, which is pretty handy.

Super_pope: serial_crusher: Maybe it's just me, but I can look at a video on YouTube and think to myself, "yeah I'm doing it right" even when I'm doing it totally wrong.  Having a coach looking at me and specifically calling me out is immensely helpful.

So like a G spot.

Get enough exercise at work.

Gentoolive: Get enough exercise at work.

Jumping to conclusions, running off at the mouth, and assorted tasks? Yep, I've known many people who get plenty of the same exercise at work. My relatives get tons of exercise doing the same shiat, whether they're working or not. ;P

Benevolent Misanthrope:  Yeah.

I usually do a Wendler cycle 5, 5, >5 one week, 3, 3, >3 the following week, and 5, 3, 1 the week after that. Usually week 1 is goes from 60%-75% 1RM, week 2 is like 70-80%, and week 3 goes for the 1RM to calculate percentages the following cycle. Seemed to work pretty well for me; and you're right. Rest in between is key. I don't think I could do even that sort of weight more than two times a week on the same muscle group.

Smeggy Smurf: The closest thing to Crossfit that I do is kettlebell swings while softly chanting "group sex" with each swing

The first time my trainer had me do pole squats, I wanted to ask "Whose pole?"  MIght be a female perspective thing, lol.

Rapmaster2000: Russ1642: LazyMedia: brap: You'll be in the best shape you've ever been within three months, which will great for the nine months you will spend recovering from your severe spinal injury.

QFT. I tried Cross Fit when I was already in pretty good shape. Threw out my back doing dead lifts.

Probably because they didn't teach proper lifting technique but rather just said, hey do some deadlifts. Go.

Comcast has these On-Demand workouts and they tell you to do deadlifts with no form instruction and they want you to move fast at it like an aerobic exercise.  Even though it's only about 20 pounds they're going to get sued if the keep that up.

Who takes exercise advice from Comcast?

Everyone hates leg day. That's not a crossfit thing.

Ehhhh I never cared, but then genetics blessed me with calves and thighs that develop easily.
