rzrwiresunrise: If their history and political science courses aren't already getting them to examine "components of race, gender, socioeconomic class, sexual orientation, ability, religion, international status, and power differentials", then WTF are they actually learning???

This makes me glad to say I went to a state university.

Power and privilege training. W. T. F.

So this happened at Dartmouth a while back.   http://www.insidehighered.com/quicktakes/2014/04/02/students-occupy-d a rtmouth-presidents-office#sthash.j71YuxGN.dpbs

very good WSJ article  - google "Oppressed by the Ivy League"

On Tuesday Dartmouth's finest seized the main administration building and disrupted college business. The squatters were allowed to remain until Thursday night, when the dean of the college negotiated and signed an exit settlement assuring them the non-dialogue would continue.

The demonstrators had a 72-point manifesto instructing the college to establish pre-set racial admission quotas and a mandatory ethnic studies curriculum for all students. Their other inspirations are for more "womyn or people of color" faculty; covering sex change operations on the college health plan ("we demand body and gender self-determination"); censoring the library catalog for offensive terms; and installing "gender-neutral bathrooms" in every campus facility, specifically including sports locker rooms.

"That document includes numerous demands, including increased enrollment (to 10 percent each) of black, Latino and Native American students; the enhancement of many ethnic studies programs; a pledge to make 47 percent of postocs be people of color; and a requirement departments "that do not have womyn or people of color will be considered in crisis and must take urgent and immediate action to right the injustice."

Mr. Hanlon left after an hour and told the little tyrants that he welcomed a "conversation" about their ultimatums. They responded in a statement that conversations-to be clear, talking-will lead to "further physical and emotional violence enacted against us by the racist, classist, sexist, heterosexist, transphobic, xenophobic, and ableist structures at Dartmouth." They added: "Our bodies are already on the line, in danger, and under attack."

So let's be absolutely clear.

77% of America is white.
13% of America is black.
17% is Latino (but most of them are also white)
5% is Asian
1% is Native American.

And when you go look at test scores (and yeah, test scores are a *reasonable* proxy for college readiness across populations and at sufficient differences, ability.  10 points probably doesn't matter, 3-400 points probably does), the Asians kick EVERYONE's ass and the whites don't do too bad.  In fact, poor whites kick rich blacks asses on a statistical level.  So those numbers are high, once you figure that 40% of the Ivy League should be Asian.

So the net effect of this will be a MASSIVE test of mismatch effect.  Because you're going to kick qualified, prepared whites and asians down the chain, and bring marginal "people of color" up.  Though of course, given mismatch theory (Rank within school matters more than actual school.  Better to be at the top of Ohio State than the bottom of Harvard), I'm wondering if this isn't a secret plot by white males to continue ruling the world.

Yeah.  Oh, and even funner/scarier is that Harvard grads run the country.  So 30-40 years from now, the people who believe this crazy shiat will be in charge.

Kumana Wanalaia: not_an_indigo: hasty ambush: I Checked My Privilege, And It's Doing Just Fine

The proper response to the privilege gambit is laughter. The super-serious zealots of progressivism hate being laughed at, but there's really no other appropriate response outside of a stream of obscenities. The privilege game is designed to circumvent arguments based on reason and facts and evidence, so the way to win it is to defeat it on its own terms.

Call: "Check your privilege!"

Response: "What you call 'privilege' is just me being better than you."

They won't like it. It will make them angry. Good. Because tactics like "Check your privilege" are designed to make us angry, to put us off-balance, to baffle us and suck us down into a rabbit hole of leftist jargon and progressive stupidity.

Check my privilege? I just did, and it's doing great. If you want some privilege too, maybe you ought to get your sorry behind a job.

You sound white.

He's probably white, but he's definitely an asshole.

Why is he an asshole? Because he refuses to be a victim of white guilt? Sounds more like a hero to me.

Fark like a Barsoomian: UrukHaiGuyz: Before you go on another creepily race-obsessed and irrelevant screed

Do you know what thread you're in? Did you RTA?

Yeah, wasn't much to it. Some student group at Harvard has successfully lobbied the school administration to include in their orientation a section dedicated to the various power and privilege advantages and disadvantages that various groups face, and presumably promoting sensitivity towards historically disadvantaged groups.

I don't see why that's cause for hyperbolic alarmist cries about "demonizing the white man" or whatever. How much do you even remember from your orientation?

Right. Because 5 years at a McJob will catapult you right to the top.

If after fives years you are still stuck  the problem probably lies more with you than with the system.

Before you go on another creepily race-obsessed and irrelevant screed, in all likelihood this amounts to a freshmen orientation skit along the lines of "Don't be an asshole to people from different backgrounds".  I'm okay with the people in charge learning that.
