Class Syllabus...

Lesson One:

LOL, we're just farking with you. You don't need to learn shiat. Real majors are for suckers.

"With power comes great privilege. Any questions? No? OK great. The rest of the class will be learning expensive liquors and wines and finding ways to hide your income from your wife and abroad, and by abroad I don't mean those 10000 hookers you'll be farking."

Is this that one class about how every single person in the world is secretly giving off "microaggressions" and therefore every single slight, intentional or unintentional, is secretly a great horrendous insult to your entire race/gender/class?

I mean, I'm not saying they're wrong, but maybe we should back off that for a while.  Because that way of thinking scares the EVER-living shiat out of me.

/Because "He cut in front of me in line" -> "He's a misogynist" is never going to end in a victimization complex, deserved or not.

If their history and political science courses aren't already getting them to examine "components of race, gender, socioeconomic class, sexual orientation, ability, religion, international status, and power differentials", then WTF are they actually learning???

This makes me glad to say I went to a state university.

Almost.

So this happened at Dartmouth a while back.   http://www.insidehighered.com/quicktakes/2014/04/02/students-occupy-d a rtmouth-presidents-office#sthash.j71YuxGN.dpbs

very good WSJ article  - google "Oppressed by the Ivy League"

On Tuesday Dartmouth's finest seized the main administration building and disrupted college business. The squatters were allowed to remain until Thursday night, when the dean of the college negotiated and signed an exit settlement assuring them the non-dialogue would continue.

The demonstrators had a 72-point manifesto instructing the college to establish pre-set racial admission quotas and a mandatory ethnic studies curriculum for all students. Their other inspirations are for more "womyn or people of color" faculty; covering sex change operations on the college health plan ("we demand body and gender self-determination"); censoring the library catalog for offensive terms; and installing "gender-neutral bathrooms" in every campus facility, specifically including sports locker rooms.

"That document includes numerous demands, including increased enrollment (to 10 percent each) of black, Latino and Native American students; the enhancement of many ethnic studies programs; a pledge to make 47 percent of postocs be people of color; and a requirement departments "that do not have womyn or people of color will be considered in crisis and must take urgent and immediate action to right the injustice."

Mr. Hanlon left after an hour and told the little tyrants that he welcomed a "conversation" about their ultimatums. They responded in a statement that conversations-to be clear, talking-will lead to "further physical and emotional violence enacted against us by the racist, classist, sexist, heterosexist, transphobic, xenophobic, and ableist structures at Dartmouth." They added: "Our bodies are already on the line, in danger, and under attack."

So let's be absolutely clear.

77% of America is white.
13% of America is black.
17% is Latino (but most of them are also white)
5% is Asian
1% is Native American.

And when you go look at test scores (and yeah, test scores are a *reasonable* proxy for college readiness across populations and at sufficient differences, ability.  10 points probably doesn't matter, 3-400 points probably does), the Asians kick EVERYONE's ass and the whites don't do too bad.  In fact, poor whites kick rich blacks asses on a statistical level.  So those numbers are high, once you figure that 40% of the Ivy League should be Asian.

So the net effect of this will be a MASSIVE test of mismatch effect.  Because you're going to kick qualified, prepared whites and asians down the chain, and bring marginal "people of color" up.  Though of course, given mismatch theory (Rank within school matters more than actual school.  Better to be at the top of Ohio State than the bottom of Harvard), I'm wondering if this isn't a secret plot by white males to continue ruling the world.

Yeah.  Oh, and even funner/scarier is that Harvard grads run the country.  So 30-40 years from now, the people who believe this crazy shiat will be in charge.

The time would be better spent beefing up the business ethics course (cue Billy Madison jpg) and making that mandatory. We'd be far better off if the future business leaders of the world were taught that true capitalism means being honest, making a good product, and exchanging the fair value of that product freely with consenting parties for something of equal value. That system works. It pays people a fair wage (value for value) teaches them to embrace innovation (increasing the value of what they're selling) being in tune with the social climate of their clients (be who people want to freely give money to) and creating actual products people want to buy. Not the fascist system we have now which promotes collusion with government to rig the system in their favor, rewards bribes and corruption with edging out competitors, removes choice from the consumer and neuters the consumers role as a consenting party with an equal say in any transaction, all while limiting innovation and allowing inferior products to be made and sold because people don't have a better option to spend their money on.

But no, this will just be another "if you're a white male, you're evil no matter what you actually say do or think" brainwashing session.

I Checked My Privilege, And It's Doing Just Fine

The proper response to the privilege gambit is laughter. The super-serious zealots of progressivism hate being laughed at, but there's really no other appropriate response outside of a stream of obscenities. The privilege game is designed to circumvent arguments based on reason and facts and evidence, so the way to win it is to defeat it on its own terms.

Call: "Check your privilege!"

Response: "What you call 'privilege' is just me being better than you."

They won't like it. It will make them angry. Good. Because tactics like "Check your privilege" are designed to make us angry, to put us off-balance, to baffle us and suck us down into a rabbit hole of leftist jargon and progressive stupidity.

Check my privilege? I just did, and it's doing great. If you want some privilege too, maybe you ought to get your sorry behind a job.

Yeah, wasn't much to it. Some student group at Harvard has successfully lobbied the school administration to include in their orientation a section dedicated to the various power and privilege advantages and disadvantages that various groups face, and presumably promoting sensitivity towards historically disadvantaged groups.

I don't see why that's cause for hyperbolic alarmist cries about "demonizing the white man" or whatever. How much do you even remember from your orientation?

Intelligence Squared US aired a debate about affirmative action in which one side brought this up. Well, they brought up the mismatch idea, not the white-males-ruling-the-world idea...

Ok, think of it this way.

The racial makeup of my hometown in the Detroit burbs was 71.5% White, 11.4% African American, 0.4% Native American, 13.9% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 0.4% from other races, and 2.1% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.1% of the population.

My highschool was pretty good.  Shipped about 2/3rds of the graduating class off to some college, about half of that went to the 2 state schools, 1 of which was a Top 25.  And then we'd ship 2-3 kids off to Harvard or MIT or similar.

AP Math/Science was about half white/half asian.
AP English/History were basically white people central with 20% Asians floating around the corner.  In the case of AP English 12, it literally looked like that picture of the German barmaids.  Because there was one Indian girl and no guys in a 30-person class.
There were some black people on the AP track, but all but all but one of them failed out freshman year.

(And in a 30-person class, 2% Latino == rounding error).

So using AP courses as a proxy for college readiness, from those demographics, college would be:

~30% Asian
~60% white
~55% female.  (But engineering would be even more male than it is today).
Rounding error black
Lack of data Latino.

So the entire concept of mismatch theory is basically that

* That's bad.
* So the good schools kick out marginal white and asian kids and let in marginal black kids.
* Especially since, as you can see, they want minority OVERrepresentation.
* So the black kids are notably less prepared.  Because the kids who were good enough to go to Tier N schools went to Tier N-1 schools instead (See quote below)
* Except "Better to be at the top of the class at OSU instead of at the bottom of the class at Harvard".  And by definition, (especially once you get below the first couple tiers), the average black student is more marginal.  Yes, there's the Obama's of the world, but there's also the Keshawn Campbell's of the world.
* And then they fail and drop out at higher rates.

And of course, it works both ways.  The white and asian males of the world, by virtue of having been dumped DOWN a couple of tiers to make up for the minorities going up-tier, do better.  And then they keep running the world.

Because even if they aren't running the world today, they will be after a couple generations.  Assuming that mismatch theory is correct of course.

While Hoxby defined "high achieving" as 1300 SAT M-V, let's be clear: no white or Asian kid without legacy parents or uncommon athletic or artistic ability has any shot at all at a top 20 school without a GPA of 4.0 or higher and SAT combined score over 1400.

According to the College Board, however, just 1500 African Americans scored 700 on either the Math or Reading SAT-which means almost certainly fewer than 1500 scored 700 on both.
The number of African Americans at the top 20 schools, using 2008 data (saved me looking up the individual common data sets), is 2,217.

Okay, a couple of the top 20 schools field football and basketball teams, but the steep SAT skews for athletes are usually found at the big public universities. So the entire reservoir of African Americans with genuinely competitive SAT scores (never mind grades) are taken up entirely by the top 20 schools and they're already scooping into the scores below that marker. It goes down from there.

Meanwhile, at 35th ranked NYU, 34-42% of their admits received 700 or higher on the Math or Reading SAT, while only 12-14% of the students were accepted with scores below 600 on either section. It's probably just a coincidence that their Hispanic and black admits combined were 15%? So by 35th ranked NYU, they are reaching down into the 500s. Berkeley, at #21, accepts 3-5% of students with scores in the 400s, but then Cal has a football team.

From the tumblr:

What can you do to encourage dialogue around issues of diversity at HKS?

[snipped] What does this mean in practical terms? I can raise discussion questions among my friends at lunch. I can host dinner parties where we talk about what diversity means.

hahaha, oh wow

I also feel uncomfortable because of my religion. There have been occasions in which the professor has given his very personal view on religious matters which were exceptionally biased. Given his (so far it has been only male professors) position of authority in the class and my minority status, I felt uncomfortable by his biased opinions and by been put on the spot unnecessarily.

get a helmet, pussy

Woman-identified students raise their hands to be told, "Let's get some more diverse voices!" while man-identified students speak for the third or fourth time, their comments written on the board as "insightful." Professors describe women TFs and CAs as "dedicated," while the men are "brilliant." I know I'm less likely to be dismissed bringing an issue to a professor's attention if I go to the appointment with a sympathetic man - even if that professor is, as they all profess to be, progressive. Otherwise, we can't raise concerns about diversity or histories of trauma in the classroom, because it might "have a chilling effect" (directly quoting from an HKS professor). The apparent concern is that those with historical privilege will feel silenced from expressing their opinions - heaven forbid.

my prejudice is good prejudice

I felt surrounded by so many incredibly peers who were clearly passionate about inclusion and justice. But at the same time I felt like a minority within a minority. It sometimes seems like we are much more comfortable talking about diversity when it comes to race, class, gender and now sexual orientation to a large degree, but it's hard to raise how important your faith is to your identity without feeling like people will assume you're inevitably judgmental, narrow-minded, or interested in proselytizing.

That's a laugh. What do you mean, these paragons of inclusion and tolerance are anti-religious?

The worst thing about HKS is the hypocrisy of claiming to care about diversity, but then to function in a way that excludes the perspectives of certain groups when discussing serious topics that could significantly hurt them if misunderstood (I.e. Topics related to Identities based on race, sexuality, religion, class, disability, etc.) and even excludes perspectives of groups that generally have privilege, but still need to be heard to have a complete view of the topic (I.e groups like republicans, conservatives, etc).

This person will probably grow to despise left wing preoccupations like this.

Of course these institutions are only going to pay these ideals lip service. You guilt trip people instead of persuading them, they're not going to be big supporters and are going to go the path of least resistance.

meyerkev: I'm wondering if this isn't a secret plot by white males to continue ruling the world

And of course all your alleged numbers and stats occur in a vacuum, with no outside influences, societal issues, psychological conundrums, political maneuvering, historical bias or any other forces which might explain those figures. Every person is a self-contained history, unaffected by anything which resides outside their own skin... or mind. Their life experiences mean nothing, their upbringing is naught but a footnote, and their environment even less.

That's the problem with the poor downtrodden white males (sadness) who seek verification of their poor downtrodden-ness... they oh-so-conveniently forget that for every what, and where, and who, and how much... there's a "why?". And as in any science, including the science of statistics (their favorite), "why?" is the most important question to ask, and the most difficult to answer.

Context is a Good Thingtm.

spamdog: What do you mean, these paragons of inclusion and tolerance are anti-religious?

Considering what one religion in particular has done to the social fabric, law and politics in this country for the past 30-plus years, they would be justified in thinking this. Remember, these students grew up under the onslaught of the religious right, and as such have felt the full fury of their societal rendering, especially college (reproductive) age women.

This is not about religion, it's about assholes. Unfortunately enough assholes from one religion in particular have screwed things up for those other members of that religion who mind their own business, read their book, pray to their god, and leave other people the fark alone to live their lives. People don't like assholes who want to change the law, change society, and even change other religions to fit their paradigm of "how things are supposed to be".
