I just made a similar point about this yesterday.  In all the cases I've read about over the years, the following pattern emerges:
1. None of them have read the whole book (or seen the play or whatever it is) and often it is just one passage, page or even paragraph that they've read or heard about.
2. Most of them, especially parents, are chilled to the bone about the idea of their child reading about sex, but have no problem with them reading about abuse, violence, war, murder, or any other thing that one would hope would never happen to them in real life.

This NH case is the exact same.  One page out of over 400.

Yep.

They work from a position of total ignorance and believe that the best thing for their children is to ensure their ignorance as well.

This was for ninth graders. High school freshmen. fark me, I saw (gasp) a nipple in the Zeffirelli Romeo and Juliet when my freshman english teacher showed it to us, and that was after  the main characters had sex! These aren't little children. They're developing into adults, and keeping them ignorant will make them either as reactionary and unpleasant as their parents or teen pregnant. Or both.

Someone should start protest against the bible... let's get it banned everywhere because of all the sex and violence, so how the fundies react to that.

Anywhere with a slogan like"Live Free or Die" is going to have it's share of asshats like this guy. The vast majority of New Hampshire citizen just want to Live Free to Grow a Bigger Garden this year without having to apply to some civil board to be allowed to do so. Otherwise , they pretty much mind their own business and wish that others would mind their own business too.

Sherman Alexie is quite funny about why his book gets banned because a teenage boy masturbates.

When it comes up, he asks his audience "Raise your hands if you masturbated in the last week?"

Reading his take on it, you would think the kids were assigned to read Fifty Shades of Gray, but in truth, the book isn't enough to make your average grandmother blush, much less Hugh Hefner.

This is the ONLY way to take in 50 Shades of Gray.

"I am utterly appalled that this was an oversight, that my son had this book in his hand for a week. (It's) unacceptable," said Sarah Carrigan, a parent.

"I fully understand how he feels. It really is a huge violation," said Barbara Baer, his wife.

"Why should those ideas be put in their mind. They can discuss this some other way. They don't need that kind of imagery," Barbara Baer said.

But you missed this paragraph?

Todd Starnes has built a career on claiming, usually on thoroughly specious grounds, that Christians are being oppressed in modern America. Naturally, he's all over this story, writing for Fox News that the book in question, Nineteen Minutes by Jodi Picoult, is "smutty," "pornographic," "racy," "bawdy," and "enough to make even Hugh Hefner blush." Reading his take on it, you would think the kids were assigned to read Fifty Shades of Gray, but in truth, the book isn't enough to make your average grandmother blush, much less Hugh Hefner.

Or the link in it to his own Fox News column?

Also, the link in the second graf goes to a story about one of the concerned parents getting thrown out of a town meeting, and that story has a link to another story with his actual statements on the book. Frankly, it should have linked directly to the second story.

It's actually a rape scene that they're objecting to. A rape scene in a book that also has severe bullying and a school shooting. But their primary concern seems to be that a boy stuck his penis into a girl's vagina.

If the libbos had their way, our kids would end up having sex someday and yet never feel the sweet release of a brutal beating, violent spouse, or fiery death, the way it is supposed to be in a civilized world!

You can look for all kinds of elaborate theories about why people behave like this, but ultimately it comes down to this. The brains of conservatives are most stimulated, at a primal level, by fear and disgust. And most of these people have been raised to consider sex to be "icky", so it spikes their disgust reaction.

Everything else is set dressing. It's nothing more than elaborate narratives that people confabulate to make themselves feel that they have a rational, reasonable justification for what they are feeling. So there is no point trying to talk people out of the positions they present, because they will just replace them with another one, because the primal disgust response is still there. Only if you can get them to stop being disgusted can you make progress.

(As an aside, you see exactly the same process in social conservative's reaction to anything to do with homosexuality, or even to the HPV vaccine, to which the only conceivable reason to object is that "sex is icky".

I think more to the point is that this guy has a 14-year-old daughter who read the offending passages. The mindset of the father obsessed with his daughter's purity: his precious princess reading about ejaculate is only one step closer to having some in her.

No, I have.  No one has seriously posited the resulting developmental problems with this.  I get the religious element.  I get the instinctive element.  I don't get the science, psychology, or sociology of what harm actually happens.

Well, let's see, it's because Christian conservatives love violence, torture, rape and spewing senseless death whenever they can.

Why else would all of the people constantly calling for bombing, killings and war consider themselves "Christians"?

Show me a conservative "Christian" and I will show you a person whose hypocrisy would make Jesus vomit in his mouth.
